Introduction/ Purpose of Music Video’s• Short films initially made in the 1960’s with The Beatles,

The Monkees, Cliff Richard etc…• Growing popularity of Top of the Pops led to demand of

videos from audiences.• Music video is essentially a spin off of the films of the 60’s.

but with a ‘live’ feeling presented to the viewer with the band performing.

Now for some famous music video directors…

David Fincher• Known for working with high profile clients.• Directed big budget videos for Madonna ‘Express Yourself’, ‘Vogue’, ‘Oh Father’.•Directed ‘Who is it?’ for Michael Jackson.•Also directed ‘Love is Strong’ for The Rolling Stones.

Jonathon Dayton/ Valerie Faris• Famous for their work with ‘indie’ bands such as REM, Oasis, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.• Won 6 MTV awards for ‘Tonight Tonight’ by the Smashing Pumpkins.• Founded a production company called ‘Bob Industries’.• Now direct TV commercials for Ikea, Sony, Apple and Volkswagen – as well as directing the film ‘Little Miss Sunshine’.

Music Video AccessAccess to music videos is easier than ever. There are dedicated TV channels such as MTV and TMF which show music all day.

Recently with the internet music videos are commonly shown on the artists website, or production company website. But the most popular viewing website is Youtube. Most production companies have a channel on there for viewer to see the video. However, in recent years independent channels such as Vevo have a group of artists, so viewers can search the channel for whichever artist they wish to view.

BudgetsBelow is a table with details of the most expensive music videos made, with the inflation prices (far right) into current costs. Notice how the most expensive tend to be by American artists.
