Dear Parents/Carers,
This is the last Newsletter before my retirement , and I should like to wish the school every success in
the future. I know that the staff will continue to work hard on behalf of the children, offering the huge
variety of experiences which is part of the ‘fabric’ of St Mary’s. I have enjoyed my years at the school,
benefitting from the support of parents, staff and Governors. Thank you!
I know that Year 5 are looking forward to their visit to the Isle of Wight next week. I am sure they will
have a wonderful time. Many thanks to Mr Leggett and his team who will be accompanying the
children. Thanks also to Miss Dixon and staff for making the arrangements for the Year 6 visit to
Bowles Activity Centre in June. I hope they all have a great week.
Wishing you all refreshing and happy Easter holidays.

Sports News
There have been lots of exciting sports events on this term. As you will see from the Rugby and
Football Reports we have lots to be proud of at St Mary’s! In the next newsletter there will be results
for the South of England Rugby Final, ESSSP Girls’ Football Final and the South Tandridge Netball
Tournament. We also have the Dance Festival, Tennis, Rounders, Cricket and District Sports Track and
Field to look forward to in the summer term.
We are now collecting ActiveKid vouchers from Sainsbury’s so please send these in if you shop at
Sainsbury’s! Thank you to all of the members of staff who have been helping to coach and organise
these events. Your hard work is much appreciated.

Earrings
Please be reminded that ears should only be pierced at the start of the summer holidays.
Children are not permitted to wear earrings for P.E under Surrey guidelines. Children who have
pierced ears may wear plain studs only. It would be preferable if they did not wear earrings to school
on P.E days. If children do wear earrings they are responsible for keeping them safe.
Sports Hall Athletics
On the 2nd of February 20 children from year 5 went to Redhill sports centre to take part in a sports
competition against 8 other local schools.
There were lots of different sports events to do. These included lots of running relays and obstacle
relays and other events such as vertical jump, long jump, chest push and speed bounce.
We all had great fun and St Marys School did very well. 7 of the other schools that
were competing were year 6’s, but we still did really well and managed to come 6th
out of 9!

Bikeability Level 1
This course is for Year 5 children and will take place after school on
Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June (A 2 day course) in the school
playground. The exercises are designed to improve the children’s
balance and control skills. A letter will be sent out to Year 5 parents
early in the summer term with more details and an opportunity to enrol
your child on this course.
ESSSP Rugby Finals
On Thursday the 3rd of March, some talented Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in the ESSSP County Rugby
finals.
We travelled over in convoy to the Reigate Rugby Club feeling excited to be in the final but also a bit
nervous.
The last time we played in a competition we had done no training and did not have a clue what we were
doing, yet we came 2nd so we knew we were going to have some tough games ahead. We arrived there
first, even before most of the Rugby Football Union. We looked very professional in our flash jackets
and our new water bottles. We got on with practising our passing, then the competition arrived, includ-
ing one player who was taller than Miss Keller. The competition looked strong, so we put our heads
down and focused on our game.
Our first game was against Whyteleafe School. We pulled ahead early leading 2-0. Whyteleafe pulled
forward slightly, but we came back strong – the final score was 5-2 to St. Mary’s. Tries were scored by
Toby, the two Freddies, Rae and Zac. Feeling confident, we went into our second game against Wray
Common School. Although we won this as well, it was a tough game, with the final score 4-3. Freddie
Kiely came off the pitch after an injury, and was replaced by William Buxton.
Our third game in the group stages was against St. Anne’s. The game was rough, but we kept our lines
strong. The tries were back and forth. We were losing 5-4, but a strong late try by Zac meant we fin-
ished the game in a draw. This was the end of the group stages. We felt we had played well but had to
wait for the result. The group stages were announced and St. Mary’s had not only come in our group,
but were first overall. This meant we were in the Semis!
Our semi-final was against Tadworth. We won this easily with a 6-3 victory. Tries were scored by Issy,
Freddie Sullivan, Toby, Owen and Freddie Kiely. We could not believe it, we were in the final again,
and also against our rivals from last time – Nutfield! Tiredness was starting to kick in, but spurred by
cheers from the St. Mary’s end we were ready to win! The game was a tight one. At the final whistle it
was 5 all… we were going to golden try!
It was unfortunate that at this point Nutfield had possession and were able to score a final try. This made
the final result 6-5 to Nutfield. Heads held high we were announced 2nd place in this Surrey final. This
now means we go through to the South Of England finals on the 29th March.
We would like to give a special mention to William Buxton who subbed for George Walker, who unfor-
tunately was ill on the day. We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Keller for coaching us and
organising us and also all the parents who came to support us.
The team who played were: Lyons, Freddie
Sullivan, Owen Hulme, Max McAuliffe, Lucia
Qureshi, Lucy Sumner, Isabelle Fullilove, Freddie
Kiely, William Buxton, Rae Barnard, Barnaby
Stott and also Zac Fairchild who
captained the team.

Football Tournament
On the 9th March we had a football tournament at St Marys. Our first match of the
ESSSP was against Nutfield. It was a very tough match until Jack scored, but Nutfield
equalised, but suddenly Christian was through on goal and BANG goal. The final score
was 2-1 to St Mary’s. Our second match was against Holland. A lot of us had friends in
their team, so we were all talking before the match, but as soon as the match started we
put our game faces on. The match was very open, but they got a goal and won 1-0. After
the game we were all smiles. Our next match was up against Lingfield, unfortunately we
lost 2-1.
The next week we played St Stevens we were all over them, but couldn't find the net. They had 2
counter attacks and scored them both so the match finished 2-0.
The next Wednesday we played Godstone and went ahead with a drag back croft nutmeg through ball to
Tom who passed to Louis who finished the goal. Robert headed in the second to make us win. Our sec-
ond match we won 1-0 with a long goal kick from Jack to Freddie who bought the ball down with an
amazing touch and then an amazing finish in the top corner. To our amazement Julian Speroni (Crystal
Palace Goalkeeper) came to watch us. We finished in 3rd place behind Lingfield and Holland.
The team players were: Jack McMenamin, Christian Lee, Freddie Sullivan, Louis Kenyon, Toby
Lyons, Leo Chalmers, Thomas Knight, Robert Pilling, Ben Irons, Jackson Knight
Thank you to Mr Leggett for coaching and organising us, and thank you to Miss Keller and all the
parents for supporting us. Also thank you to Dan Bowles who came along to referee during the
matches.
ELECTROCITY
We had a man called John who came into our school. He owns a workshop called the Electro City
Workshop. We used LEGO® to build FANTASTIC models and then we added lights and switches to
make them brighter! Lots of us built great models and our group built a church with three bulbs inside
it which really made it shine!
After about three quarters of an hour or so John called us all into a circle and explained about the next
part of the workshop. He showed us a little train with a motor in it and then he put it on a track, at-
tached a battery to it and WHIZZZZ—off it went! There were buffers on the end of the tack and so he
set us a challenge to see how close we could get our trains to the buffers without hitting them. I
(unfortunately!) failed. John also gave us some car making bits and set us off to work with them. After
a lot of designing and building John finally told us to stop and clear up. It was sad having to break up
but it was surprising how quickly we cleared them up! Besides all his LEGO®, John also has an amaz-
ing website. Visit it at: www.electrocityworkshop.co.uk

St Mary’s Sponsored Run for Mrs Thomas and the RHN
Friday 18th
February was a fantastic afternoon for our sponsored run. The staff and children
worked hard and there was a great feeling on the track as we each did our bit to earn sponsorship
money. Well done to everyone who took part in the run. Thank you to the parents who helped to
prepare the much needed refreshments and to the parents who stood out in the cold counting laps!
Sponsorship money is still being collected and our current total has passed an amazing £6000!
Thank you to everyone for their generosity. Diane Thomas would be touched by this gesture if she
knew about it and her family certainly are. An album of photos from the day is being taken up to

GIRLS’ FOOTBALL
The South Tandridge girls Year 5 & 6 football tournament was held at St Mary's on 2nd March 2011.
We entered two teams for the tournament St Mary's A and St Mary's B. Other schools who participated were St
Catherine’s, St Stephens, Holland , Lingfield and Godstone.
St Mary's A: St Mary's B
Holly Weight (GK) Isabelle Boorman (GK)
Jasmine Pearce Stephanie Boast
India Hogg Georgia Daly
Ellen Attridge Rebecca Davis
Ellie Steeden Issy Irons
Lauren Goodliffe Ellie Currie
Jessie Millington Anna Polanska
Taya Williams Sophia D'Alessandro
Both St Mary's teams played first in their group which made it a little tricky for me having to run between the
two pitches!
St Mary's A Results
St Mary's A v Holland Junior School - won 3-1 Goals from Jasmine Pearce and Lauren Goodilffe
St Mary's A v Lingfield Won 5-1 Goals from - Jasmine Pearce, Taya Williams and Ellie Steeden
St Mary's A v St Mary's B was the third game St Mary's A winning 3-0
Goals from - Jasmine Pearce and Taya Williams
St Marys A v St Stephens Lost 3-1 Goal from Jessie Millington
The Final between St Mary's A v St Stephens was very physical and the girls played tremendously well and we
were so unlucky to get caught on the break for two of the goals but by this time the girls were exhausted,
especially as we only had one sub per team so it was non stop running for the girls. Holly Weight in goal was
again very agile and worked well as a great support for her defence.
The A team showed strength and determination with Jessie Millington working extremely hard and Jasmine
Pearce, Taya Williams and Elle Steeden scoring many of the goals.
St Marys B Team - Results
St Mary's B v Godstone 0-0 St Mary's v B v St Mary's A 0-3 St Mary's v Holland 0-1
Issy Irons in defence was a force to be reckoned with and stood her ground, along with Anna Polanska who ran
her socks off. It was the first time playing competitive football for many of the girls and they worked hard even
when they were losing which showed good team spirit and determination.
All the girls worked extremely hard the matches were 15mins long and the ground was very sticky and tough on
the legs!
The A team made it through to the finals which is being held at South Park, Reigate on 23rd
March but unfortu-
nately its the Year 5 Isle of Wight residential so some of the girls will be missing! It’s a great shame as they
worked very hard to get to this stage.
Date for Diary: Friendly Match on 28th
March, at St Marys with Holland and Godstone school attending.
