NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
“The old order changeth yielding place to new”, and in keeping with the reality that nothing is permanent in life except change, it is time for me to hand over the baton to the incoming National President. As I do so, it is only appropriate that I should present to you the Report Card for my two-year tenure which will end on the 27th of June, with special reference to the financial year 2014-15. While the performance of NHRDN cannot be measured by any one metric, let me start with the financial bottom line. I am happy to report that for both the years we have generated a financial surplus which will be ploughed back into strengthening the core purpose and mission of NHRDN. Details are available in the Annual Report. When I took over as the National President two years ago, it was totally clear to me and the Leadership Team that we were receiving the baton from my predecessor to participate in a relay race that started 28 years ago with the foundation of NHRDN. So, while we needed to strengthen the powerful initiatives that we had inherited, we also needed to come up with focus areas going forward. So a shared leadership group of approximately 50 people representing a fair cross-section of the NHRDN membership came together for a half-day workshop and identified the following focus areas for my two year tenure:
1) Empowering the larger NHRDN community by creating a Shared Leadership model. 2) Creating Intellectual Property by drawing on the vast pool of wisdom and knowledge of the NHRDN
membership. 3) Reinforcing NHRDN as a Thought Leader, including research output.
Very clearly we also needed to harness the power of diversity, technology and strategic alliances while keeping an eye on community interaction and skill & capability building. To this end, we created 17 Core Committees (list enclosed) whose membership drew upon the regional, gender, demographic and cross-sector diversity of our membership, to create robust plans of action in our focus areas. These Committees were to create the intellectual format and framework that could then be handed over to the network of Regions / Chapters for implementation in tandem with the National Secretariat. This was our grand design and dream as we embarked on our two year journey. As in any endeavour, there are many things that went well and several that need improvement. Let me share with you some highlights of the work done by our network of committed and passionate NHRDN members across Regions & Chapters, ably supported by an outstanding National Secretariat:
The HRSCAPE project, where we have developed a robust HR Competency framework aligned to the contemporary issues faced by India Inc., is ready for takeoff. This is a major intellectual property for NHRDN and has the potential not only to serve the NHRDN mission of capability building, but also to contribute in a big way to our brand salience and financial health.
We have successfully completed the third round of the B-School Ranking Survey along with People Matters and this too can become an important annual milestone and intellectual property for NHRDN.
We have expanded our collaboration with various academic institutions and policy making bodies including MDI, IIM – Ranchi, SHRM, BIMTECH, Fore Management School, Fudan University, Shanghai etc. & NHRDN is the India partner for the Global HR Competency Survey- 2016.

The Strategic Human Resource Leadership Program (SHRLP) was revived in November 2013 with an outstanding participation of 86 HR professionals from 29 cities across India. The next program is scheduled for July 2015.
The Ramcharan Awards has seen participation from over 100 individuals, both students and professionals, to identify Young HR Icons. This will help us to reach out to more young HR professionals and engage with them through NHRDN activities.
The CEO Conclave is fast becoming a premier annual platform to bring together business and HR leaders.
Research was another area where we have taken an important step forward. Research on Human Capital Trends was published in collaboration with Deloitte and an Employee Engagement Survey was done in association with Dale Carnegie. These research outputs received acclaim from the HR community at large and will spur us to enhance future research activities which address the challenges and opportunities in the Human Capital space.
Industrial Relations and Employee Relations were bought into greater focus.
The first L&D Summit was held and attended by over 30 L&D Leaders.
NHRDN made headway into the CSR space by introducing the CSR Summit which was attended by over 160 professionals from across the country.
Diversity and Inclusion were built into all our programs and platforms, starting with the induction of 9 women in the National Board of NHRDN. The Women Leadership Summit was an important event which I hope will grow from strength to strength in the coming years.
We have forged an important strategic global alliance with Fudan University, Shanghai for the Advanced Leadership Program (ALP).
We have harnessed the power of technology through the implementation of virtual presence to improve collaboration, webinars, building engagement around the NHRDN website and introducing SMS-based feedback.
Knowledge Management was strengthened with the creation of the NHRDN archives of past publications and the continued publication of the NHRDN Journal.
Some of the other accomplishments I would like to highlight are :
1. 80+ programs / workshops / seminars were conducted over the past two years.
2. The Hyderabad land matter has been resolved and construction is underway.
3. Contentious service tax matters have been resolved and systematically implemented.
4. The collaboration between the National Secretariat and the Regions / Chapters have been significantly enhanced.
5. The two National Conferences held in Kolkata and Mumbai received excellent response and was yet another example of synergy between the Chapters and the National Secretariat.
6. Membership has grown by 17% over the past two years. 7. Our media presence has increased significantly.
In conclusion, “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep....” I am sure that the coming years will see a lot of purposeful and transformational work in the NHRDN ecosystem. I am privileged to have been a fellow traveller in the NHRDN journey and even as I pass on the baton to the incoming President, I look forward to being part of this magical and mystical journey in the years ahead.

Last but not least, I am truly grateful to all our Members, the Leadership Team (S. V. Nathan & Shelly Singh), Board Members, Core Committee Chairmen / Members, Regional & Chapter Presidents, all Programme Speakers / Conveners / Directors, Partners & Sponsors and the outstanding National Secretariat (led by Kamal Singh and ably assisted by Dhananjay Singh) who have made sure that the purpose and objectives of NHRDN were brought to life and strengthened in the past two years. Warmest regards & best wishes, Rajeev Dubey National President- NHRDN and Group President (HR & Corporate Services) & CEO (After-Market Sector) Member of the Group Executive Board Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

NATIONAL SECRETARY’S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow NHRDNians,
Hearty Greetings!
Time flies and it has been two years since we joined the Leadership Team at
NHRDN! At this juncture as I look back at what we have achieved it gives me a
great sense of pride and satisfaction, but we know there is more to be done and
achieved to serve the HR profession at large.
NHRDN with its 30th Chapters across the country has always been the forerunner in raising the bar
for the profession. With the vibrant support of Delhi & NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar,
Pune NHRDN Chapters, we introduced capacity building interventions as National Management
Quiz, National Business Simulation Games. These initiatives were well received.
The 3rd round of Business School Ranking has also been conducted and this credible report has
been accepted as the 1st one to be Data-Based survey. This PAN India survey was ably supported
by the Office Bearers and Members of our Chapters. We are grateful to their commitment to the
cause and passion to engage with the Academia in this mammoth exercise.
We are happy to see our Network growing, our NHRDN Bangalore and Pune Chapters celebrated
Silver Jubilee Year. Hosur Chapter in collaboration with other prominent HR Associations organised
a programme in Tamil. This was an unique effort to reach out to stakeholders in local language.
Hosur Chapter whilst sustaining the momentum through events and engagement initiatives has
successfully leveraged the enhanced salience by focusing on memberships. This has helped them
increase their membership base by nearly 30% last year and in absolute terms more than some of
the larger established chapters. Mumbai & Bhubaneswar Chapter‟s initiative‟s Womentoring and
Zenith have created a powerful impact. The Bhubaneswar Chapter also focused on value-add for
its student members through development programs, mentoring initiatives and field visits. „Zenith‟ –
a recognition platform was created that felicitated organizations in the region with good HR
practices. Similarly, „Quizzotica‟ had HR students vying to demonstrate their knowledge of HR.
Bhubaneswar Chapter also demonstrated its social conscience by conducting an event at a school
for blind children and a blood donation camp. Likewise Hyderabad Chapter has been amongst the
most active Chapters and has consistently delivered value to its members. Amongst the various
initiatives of the Chapter, the one that stands out is „HR Interact‟. This is a weekly event that is
primarily targeted at students, and working professionals with upto 5 years of experience. Speakers
from corporates, academia and consulting space address the audience on topics of relevance and
engage with the participants. It is to the credit of the Hyderabad Chapter that this property has been
sustained over the years. In a year, 52 weekly events are conducted – religiously every Thursday
come what may. As they say in Hyderabad, if it is „HR Interact‟, then it is a Thursday!!
The Bangalore Chapter has demonstrated a holistic approach to engagement that encompassed
Stakeholder needs identification, Design, Branding, Sustainability, Execution Excellence and
Continuous Improvement. This is best exemplified by the fact that the Chapter has several unique
and highly successful initiatives such as 'Fast Track' - A 16 day weekend development program for
mid to senior level HR professionals, „Project Swayamvar‟- A Project Mela to facilitate Corporate
engagement for student internship projects, and „Faculty Development Program‟- a 6 weekend
intervention to name a few. One of the key design dimension has been „recognition‟ or as the
Chapter prefers calling „Showcase‟. This element has not only been incorporated in their periodic
8 | P a g e
events, but has also got translated into two very successful events, „Triad‟ – recognition for best
summer project, associated faculty and professional, and „HR Showcase‟. The 2014 edition of „HR
Showcase‟ that coincided with the highly successful Silver Jubilee Celebrations, set new
benchmarks in participation, with awards for organizations, start-ups and research publications.
As a part of this ever growing, Inspiring Network, my extend sincere thanks to all Chapters who got
together as Team NHRDN and availed VCES Scheme for payment of service tax since 2007.
Once again my heartfelt gratitude to NHRDN‟s Board Members, Regional and Chapter Presidents,
Director General Mr. Kamal Singh, the Leadership team and the National Secretariat who have
supported me in these two years.
I will extend my continued support and active participation as we move forward with NHRDN, in
keeping my commitment to further enhance the mission and vision of NHRDN!
Warm regards,
S V Nathan National Secretary-NHRDN Senior Director and Chief Talent Officer, Deloitte India

ACTIVITY REPORT
COVER STORY
18TH NHRDN ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON 'SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN VUCA TIMES: THE NEW
TALENT AGENDA’ FROM 20 – 22 NOVEMBER, 2014
NHRDN organised its 18th Annual Conference titled –
‘Sustainable Growth in VUCA Times - The New Talent
Agenda’ from 20th to 22nd November 2014 in
Mumbai at the Renaissance Mumbai Convention
Centre Hotel. This conference saw the presence of
close to 1500 delegates, being the largest and most
respected HR conference in the fraternity. CXOs and
CHROs from across the industry addressed the
different sessions at the three-day conference.
VUCA, one of the key developments in contemporary
organisational thought continues to redefine how we think and feel about work. While considerable debate
has been initiated on what it implies, we are still left with a nebulous term that means different things to
different practitioners. By engaging in the specificity of what really constitutes VUCA and its consequences
for the HR community, the conference aimed to uncover meaningful insights and actionable takeaways.
Some of the fundamental questions that this conference was revolved around included:
Is VUCA still an alien concept or have we in HR come to terms with its meaning and applicability?
What approach should we take to ‘planning’ in the VUCA world?
What are the opportunities of VUCA that if leveraged can give organisation’s a competitive edge?
What is the impact of VUCA on an organisation’s capability, capacity, connection, cost and
compliance?
What are the consequences of VUCA on the entire HR life cycle of recruitment, talent management,
organisation structure, compensation & benefits etc.
What are some of the leading practices that organisations are following in order to embrace VUCA?
How does India fare in comparison to the rest of
the world in applying VUCA concepts to work?
What is the next big thing in VUCA?
The primary objective of the event was to bring together
thought leaders, HR and business heads, students,
practitioners and HR professionals from different
backgrounds to engage in open dialogue, exchange
ideas and explore innovative possibilities. The diverse
group of speakers and panelists provided in-depth
insights, discussed their rich experiences and spoke
21 | P a g e
about things that had worked for their organisations
when it came to VUCA. The discussions took place
leveraging real life situations, things that have worked
well in organisations as well as challenges the
community has faced in dealing with VUCA. The event
also presented the opportunity to honour those in the
HR fraternity who have contributed to its growth. It
also recognized young professionals and students –
the future leaders who will take the field forward. In
the end, we were left with a number of actionable
items, with the key points that emerged encapsulated
below:
Conference Key Takeaways
Leadership and Culture in VUCA Times
Develop core values, mission and vision statement to give the organisation a strong identity while it
deals with the turbulent environment. Values – both personal and organisational can be the
differentiating factor, facilitating success. Realise the value of a value
Align the organisation structure with business strategy and reinforce desired culture through
reporting relationships
Articulate customized cultural DNA that complements business goals. Recognize individuals that
create the fabric of the team
Leaders must gain exposure to global business and multicultural issues to attract and engage people
that represent different cultures and countries
Leaders must focus on encouraging diversity – in generations, gender, backgrounds and thought
Three factors that characterize leadership include authenticity, leading by effort and flexibility
Leaders must take charge of driving a
collaboration culture – one of the key
determinants of organisational success
For leaders, the responsibility also
includes mentoring and building the
next in line, essential for the
organisation’s survival
Leaders need to drive a culture that
embraces technology, cultivate the
often missing personal touch and take
steps to intentionally build informal
behaviours that drive cultural meritocracy
Talent Management in VUCA Times
Develop specific and clear competency framework against which the selection, assessment and
development processes can be done
Leverage the media and social network space to attract and recruit talent; bring in creative methods
and approaches to recruit the best and the brightest
22 | P a g e
One-size-fits-all approach does not yield required results - career-customization is key to attract the
best talent
Technology is transforming how talent is assembled, producing a more fluid workforce; in VUCA
times, ‘crowd-sourcing’ is a very key talent acquisition strategy
Ensure that the mentoring process is in place, and is effective and pragmatic; create internal
networks to support groups of professionals
How individuals think about their careers, success and life goals has been redefined. The focus has
shifted from the company to the individual, from climbing the ladder to building oneself, from single
careers and one company to multiple career tracks and multiple companies
HR should focus and invest in uncovering the interconnectedness of five talent risks around
capability, capacity, connection, cost and compliance
Hire retainable talent and make retention personal
Organisations in VUCA Times
The bell curve, if used, needs to have a degree of flexibility and that much more emphasis needs to
be put on HR conversations during performance management
Coaching on how to give feedback is one of the most important skills required to retain key talent;
honesty during the performance appraisal process – both on things going well and areas of
improvement is crucial
Performance management systems should include a constant system of feedback based on projects
or regular time periods to manage employee expectations and to not leave the final appraisal as a
surprise
Build fair and equitable organisations and identify and detail the role of each stakeholder in
promoting industrial harmony – including employees, trade unions, and management
Institutionalize conflict resolution processes to create work places where every employee feels
heard and adequately represented. Create an effective grievance redressal system
The conference concluded with the Valedictory address with Mr. Kamal Singh, Director General, NHRDN
giving the vote of thanks.

Although women are estimated to comprise nearly 48% of the workforce, less than 5% of leadership
positions are held by them. Marriage, maternity and mobility were cited as some factors that decelerate
careers, causing such disparity. Summit participants deliberated on the means to overcome conscious,
unconscious and cultural biases that act as barriers in promoting leadership diversity. Steps for creating a
successful diverse leadership pipeline were also discussed. Participants felt it was important to support
women at career crossroads because their loss also denoted a loss in skilled resources for their companies.
