Remixed. Wallpaper by Arthur Slenk

Arthur Slenk (1941) found two boxes of handwritten music sheets over twenty years ago, used by an amateur orchestra between 1872 and 1941. The documents had not seen daylight for almost half a century. Carefully, he started examining page upon page, discovering the genesis, the varying pressure of pen upon paper, a cor rected error, a tiny ink stain where the pen had stumbled over a fi bre, fi ngerprints, signs of wear in the corner where the sheet was fl ipped over – all these traces, suddenly revealing the obscure members of this amateur orchestra.

The sheet music was sorted into seperate envelopes, by subject, then fi nally pasted. Each design was critically examinated, often followed by corrections. The artist worked on it every day. After seven years and 144 designs he considered this gigantic collage completed.

NLXL has selected 8 of these designs for a new wallpaper collection. The result is simply incredible. New state of the art scan techniques have been developed to capture the depth of the paper clippings. The vintage feel of the yellowed paper combined with the history behind the sheet music makes it look like a historical document on a wall.

Arthur Slenk: “This work is my “magnus opus” - and I don’t just give it to anybody. The designers at NLXL treated my designs with the respect I had hoped for. I am truly amazed by the end result.”

Brooklyn Tins Wallpaper by Merci

MERCI opened in march 2009 in the arty neighborhood of Haut-Marais in Paris. More than just a retail project, it is a unique place, a destination store with 3 cafés and restaurants as well as a very rich programme of exhibitions and scenographies that made the reputation of MERCI.Jean-Luc Colonna d’Istria of MERCI: “In 2009, MERCI selected this vintage ceiling tins as a décor concept for the Parisien store. Since the opening, there is not one day whithout seeing a visitor taking pictures of the MERCI tin counter or asking to buy it. This phenomenon has given MERCI the idea to get together with NLXL to design and market the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins.”

Historically, tin ceillings were introduced to North America as an aff ordable alternative to the exquisite plaster work used in European homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were being mass-produced. Tin ceilings were traditionally painted white to give the appearance of hand-carved or molded plaster. But, today the irregularity and the aging give all the appeal to this American architecture icon.

NLXL Founder Rick Vintage has a background in interior design. In 2005 he imported pressed tin plates for a restaurant project in the Netherlands. “Ever since we installed these tins I knew we had to do something with this beautiful product. MERCI is our key account in Paris, so we work very close together in marketing our wallpaper collections in Paris. At one of the famous parties during the Paris Design Week in january 2012 the design team of MERCI asked us if we were interested to make a wallpaper collection based on vintage tins. Brooklyn Tins was born. I think the collection shows the pleasure we have had in working together on this project.”

Concrete Wallpaper by Piet Boon® 7 designs, 900 x 48,7 cm >4,4m2 / 354” x 19” >47 SQFT

Concrete Wallpaper by Piet Boon®

Piet Boon is world famous for the incredible sophistication in his designs. The robust yet elegant classic Piet Boon style combines natural materials with subdued colour palettes for an unrivaled look that is authentic in every way. His attention to detail and esthetics can be found in private homes, beach houses, retail stores, resorts, hotels, public spaces, the furniture label and numerous product designs all over the world. Piet Boon: “We were absolutely stunned when we fi rst visited NLXL. The production methods, level of quality and the company’s unique expertise and passion were a real eye opener. We are very proud of our Concrete Wallpaper. The result is amazing in every aspect. One really has to touch it to feel the diff erence with the real thing.Concrete with its sober, subdued character is one of my favorite materials. And now there is this fabulous wallpaper which lets one transform a space, be it a wall or ceilings easily and in a very aff ordable way. We also plan to use it for wainscoting panels and ceilings. Another huge advantage is that minor damages don’t show. They simply disappear naturally in the ‘structure’.”

Rick Vintage: “Piet Boon is one of our idols. We are absolutely thrilled to create a backdrop for his contemporary designs. The rough edge of concrete has always been present at his interiors, so our teams got together to create Concrete Wallpaper. You won’t believe your eyes, it is better than the real thing! It has been a wonderful experience to work with Piet and Karin Boon and their team.”

Scrapwood Wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek8 designs, 900 x 48,7 cm >4,4m2 / 354” x 19” >47 SQFT

Scrapwood Wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek

Piet Hein Eek developed a vision on recycling long before it came into fashion. “The scrapwood cupboard from 1990 was my reaction against the prevalent craving for fl awlessness. I was walking around in a lumberyard and suddenly realized that old wood looked better than new. We are used to wanting mass products that are perfectly produced and look exactly the same. But I thought that there was space for imperfection. If you make honest furniture with natural materials and it gets old or scratched, it still looks beautiful — its aesthetic value never diminishes. I wanted to show that products that aren’t perfect still can appeal to our sense of aesthetic and functionality. I also wanted to design a product that could be made with limited means, material that was abundant. The combination of uncommon material and also uncommon, but simple methods of working became the thread through our work.”

Rick Vintage: “Scrapwood Wallpaper is a perfect example of the ‘Piet Hein Eek’ way of working, it is simply putting planks to paper. The eff ect is astonishing, the quality is so high that you could fool anyone in to thinking it is real. People just love it. If it puts a smile on people’s faces then you really have a great product.”

The Scrapwood Wallpaper has won the ICFF New York Editors Award in 2011. It has been featured in the New York Times, Daily News, Country Living, Shelterpop, Remodelista, Core77, Cup of Jo, DesignBoom, HypeBeast, Design*sponge, etc.
