“Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome”

It is a set of symptoms and signs resulting from the damage to the human immune system caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

WHAT ELSE?!

How is it transmitted?

WORLD HISTORY OF AIDS

• Most researchers believe that HIV originated in sub-SaharianAfrica during the twentieth century. AIDS was first recognizedby the U.S. CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION in 1981 and its cause, HIV, identified by American and French scientists in the early 1980s.

• New research indicates that the most pervasive global strain of HIV began spreading among humans between 1884 and 1924, suggesting that growing urbanization in colonial Africa set the stage for the HIV/AIDS pandemic.(ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2008 )

AIDS is now pandemic

In 2007, an estimated 33.2 millionpeople lived with the diseaseworldwide, and it killed an estimated2.1 million people, including 330.000 children.Over three-quarters of thesedeaths occurred in sub-SaharanAfrica,retarding economic growth and destroying human capital.

• The AIDS rates are growing between women, heterossexual, countryside populations and

the ones with low education (“PET NAS ESCOLAS”).

• The major portion of the cases are concentrated between men(78%)and women(71%) from 25 to 49 years old.

• The incidence in seniors is growing, in partdue to medication progress.

AIDS in NUMBERS - Brazil

• 186.148 – total deaths from 1980 to 2005; 135.888 men/ 7.159 women;

• 0,6% of prevalence in the population(15-49 years old).
