Considering adults average two to four colds ayear and approximately 15 percent of Americanscome down with the u annually, according tothe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
theres a chance that you will nd yourself underthe weather-but easing your suffering may be eas-ier than you realize.
A sore throat is often one of the rst signs thatyou are coming down with something. Accordingto the American Academy of Family Physicians, many things can cause a sore throat. These includeinfections with viruses, such as colds and u; sinusdrainage; allergies; and cigarette smoking, amongothers. Fortunately, the snifing, sneezing, runny, scratchy stuff can often be relieved with everydayhousehold items and ingredients.
Honey, for example, has been used for centuriesto help alleviate some of the symptoms associatedwith a common cold. A study by a Penn State Col-lege of Medicine research team found that honeymay offer an effective and safe alternative to over-
the-counter cough medicine. The study found thata small dose of buckwheat honey given before bed-time provided better relief of nighttime cough andsleep difculty in children than no treatment ordextromethorphan (DM), the cough suppressantin many over-the-counter cold medications.
For relief of irritating throat symptoms, theNational Honey Board suggests trying a spoonfulof honey to soothe and coat your throat. Take aspoonful as often as you need to relieve the irrita-tion. Since its also important to stay hydrated, youmay want to add honey to a steaming cup of tea tohelp soothe your throat. For added vitamin C, trymixing in orange, grapefruit or lemon juice.
This recipe for an all-natural Honey CitrusSoother may help your sore throat:
Honey Citrus Soother(Makes 4 servings)
3 tea bags, green or black1 cinnamon stick3 cups boiling water cup honey1 cup grapefruit juicePlace tea bags and cinnamon stick in a 1-quart
teapot. Add boiling water; steep 3 to 5 minutes.Remove cinnamon stick and tea bags; discard. Stirin honey and grapefruit juice.
Other easy ways to relieve cold and u symp-toms include:n A humidier: To open the nasal passage
without any irritating side effects, place a steamor warm-mist humidier in your bedroom. Dry aircan make cold and u symptoms feel worse. Thehumidier combats the dry air while providingmoisture to your entire body.n Sleep: The age-old advice that sleep is the
best cure to the common cold is, well, true. Sleepand immunity are tightly linked. Those who getless sleep are three times as likely to get sick asthose who averaged at least eight hours, accordingto the Archives of Internal Medicine.
nHead outdoors: Vitamin D is emerging as animportant infection ghter, according to the Uni-
versity of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.Being exposed to sunlight increases your vitaminD intake and, therefore, increases your infection-ghting ability.n Chicken soup: You hear it time and time
again, but does it really work? The answer is yes.A study conducted by the University of Nebraskafound that chicken soup contains anti-inamma-tory qualities that activate the release of mucus, reducing congestion and proving that chickensoup is in fact a great remedy for your stuffy noseand congested chest.

Mind Coaching for Perfect HealthIn 1983 I took a relaxation /stress control class. Before taking that class, I did not really know how much stress I carried in
my body. I did not know that it was not normal to feel pressure in your chest all the time or to feel a low level of anxiety allthe time. Once I learned to use the mental training exercises my high blood pressure and ulcers got better and I felt reallygood.
This began a life-long quest to study how the mind can influence the body. Since then I have studied many formsof relaxation, stress management, and alternative healing techniques. For a few years I worked with cancer patientsdoing something I called Cancer Therapy Coaching. We used mental training exercises, guided imagery, NeurolinguisticProgramming, and prayer to improve the outcome of chemotherapy, reduce side effects, eliminate fear, and reduce pain.
This was very successful, but very time consuming and after a while I had to stop doing that. I promised myself that somedayI would record a CD that could be used for stress control, help with anxiety, improve physical healing, and assist cancerpatients in all aspects of their therapy.
Well, that day has arrived. I spent several months writing scripts for the introduction and five mental training exercises. Then time was spent in the recording studio with Gary and Ann Wakenhut at the Collecting Consort to make the actualrecordings. And finally, working with an Artist, we packaged this in an attractive way.
There are two versions to this material. Some people, when they face lifes challenges, feel a reliance upon God. So, wehave prepared a Christian version which makes reference to God and Jesus throughout the Mental Training Exercises. Manyother people do not share that view, so Coaching for Perfect Health was created without the religious language. Use
which ever version fits your needs at this time in your l ife. We believe there is no right or wrongin these matters, just different ways of doing things. I want all people to be able to benefit andboth styles have had proven results.
I really want to emphasize the word Coaching. Most of the time with serious illnesses, it isour emotional human limitations that keep us from accepting the perfect health we deserve.
The person with the health issue has to do all the work to change their thinking to get a betteroutcome. But many times they do not know what to do or how to do it. Instead of years ofstudy, trial, and error, anyone can simply benefit from my expertise to get the results theydesire.
So, Coaching for Perfect Health and Christian Coaching for Perfect Health are currentlyavailable at the Healing Center or cdbaby.com. Pay Attention, Mind Coaching for Kids and
Teens, and Fit, Clean, and Sober, Mind Coaching for Recovery from Addictions are comingsoon.
