What point is the cartoonist trying to make? Explain

• hopeful view• small dog growing(success like Aaland Island)

• army leaders afraid of it

• Due to aims:- Cooperation- self defence- Disarmament

CIVILIZATION

What does source A tell you about the aims of the organization?

• supports Prohibition.• shows social problems alcohol caused• Trying to put pressure on society and politicians• Believed USA could be a more moral and healthier place

Source: BBC Video – Days that Shook the World. Disk 1 “The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand”. Sections 3 and 4

What do these sources tell you about the reasons why the Nazi Soviet Pact was

signed?• To avoid war for 1 year and 6 months• For the USSR to gain time and get ready• Stalin did not trust Hitler (who is not in the photo)• Stalin was convinced the USSR would be the next country to be attacked

“We secured peace

for our country for

one and a half

years, as well as an

opportunity of

preparing our forces

for defence if

Germany risked

attacking our

country. This was a

definite gain for

Russia and loss for

Germany”

Stalin speaking in a

radio broadcast in

1941

Which point is the cartoonist trying to make? Explain

• He criticizes the severity of the Treaty

• It was imposed on Germany

• Germany had no scape

• Focuses mainly on reparations

How far do these two sources agree?• YESBoth about German situation

Severity of Treaty

British cartoons 1921

Lloyd George and Briand (French foreign secretary)

• NOSympathy towards Germany – attempt to help by GB

Germany cheating

No help or trust

Does Source A agree with B? Explain

• YES about League- pilot and bridge designer represent Wilson – same time

• NO optimistic “New Beginning” & sun rising – criticism due to lack of keystone – destiny is desarmament (A) no aims in (B) - Members in (B) – USA active role in (A), in (B) is relaxed, not concerned.

Does source A contradict source B?

It shows a cause and consequence relationship. Germany rearming and trying planes and bombs over Guernica, a communist city.

The Spanish Civil War was between Nationalists and Republicans (communists). The Nazis are also a nationalist right wing group. Guernica was base of communist headquarters

Which source is more reliable? Account for the answer.

SOURCE AWoman crying while Nazi forces entered the Sudetenland.

SOURCE BMunich Pact: Chamberlain, Hitler and Daladier

SOURCE C

My Dear Prime Minister,… I am fully prepared to take my share in defending the Munich Agreement but I cannot conceal from myself that the last few days have disclosed between you and me a considerable difference of view… I am afraid that I remain profoundly sceptical of Nazi promises and shall do so until I see peaceful words accompanied by pacific deeds. I can therefore only regard the present situation not as “peace in our time” but as an unease truce.

A private letter from Trade Minister, Oliver Stanley, to PM Neville Chamberlain, Oct. 3 1938.

• The three: Hitler, Daladier, Chamberlain

•Photographs show part of the reality.

•Source A shows the social aspect.

•Source B shows the political aspect.

•Source C also shows the political aspect. It is a document, but a private letter, opposition within British government.

Does source A agree with source B? Explain

SOURCE A

“One of the oldest hopes has been the abolition of poverty. We Americans are nearer the final triumph over poverty than ever before…”

Hoover speaking to the American people in 1928

• Both of them refer to the same time

•Source A is aquotation by Hoover talking about prosperity “round the corner”

•Source B contradicts Source A as it shows there is poverty in USA

•Reasons for contradiction:

- Hoover believed in “rugged individualism”: people should look after themselves.- He believed business, if left alone, would overcome problems.- Social darwinism- change meant government intervension, similar to socialism.

How far does source A agree with source B? SOURCE A:German view, therefore biased.Criticises British Empire.Focus on details.

SOURCE B:British view. Biased too.Criticism to German Empire.Focus on details.

BOTH:Same message.Same period.

SOURCE A:“It is now or never: Deal with the Serbs. Straight away. The Tsar is unlikely to intervene. If he does, Germany will stand at Austria´s side.”

The Kaiser to the Austrian ambassador after the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand.

SOURCE B:“On the 30th of July, 1914 the Kaiser warned the Tsar of Russia to stop mobilising.”

From a history book. Essential Modern World History by Waugh.

Does source A say that sources C and B are lying?Source A:Comment by Kaiser to the Austrian Ambassador. His belief based on knowledge of internal conflicts and economic problems in Russia.(Knowledge)

Source B:It is a fact.Russia supported Serbia and mobilised troops. (Source)

Source C:A cartoon. Published July 29th, also after source A, and same time as source B.Same idea as in source B.

Conclusion:While source A expresses the Kaiser’s opinion, the other two show facts. Due to time chronology, the event in sources B and C do not show Source A is lying, but simply that the Kaiser was mistaken.

SOURCE B:“During Roosevelt’s first one hundred days in office, March to June 1933, he laid foundations for his promised New Deal. It required massive state involvement in the economy and the setting up of government controlled agencies. Roosevelt was given the authority to do this when Congress granted him “emergency powers”.

From a History Book (2001)

SOURCE C:“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. This

nation asks for action, and action now. Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. This problem

can be solved in part by the government creating jobs and treating the task as we would treat the

emergency of war…”

Extract from Roosevelt’s first radio broadcast, March 1933

Does source A agree with source B and C?SOURCE A

Source A:Cartoon showing Roosevelt as a man of action. What he throws away. Hoover appears at the back. Opposition.

Source B:100 days.It openly discusses the New Deal.Massive envolvement vs rugged individualism.

Source C:Roosevelt´s political campaign. Government intervension.

Conclusion:YES: same topic, different momentsNO: different perspectives. What will be elimintaed – what will be incorporated
