Brian Gluckstein,oneoftheworld’stop35designers,wasthedesignhalfoftheteam.Abigdreamerhimself,luxuryhomebuilderCarlos Jardino,ownerofPCM Project & Construction Management Inc.,wastheotherhalf.
Whatmotivatesthetwotocontinuetosayyestothechallenge?“Myfatherdiedofcancerat52,”Carlossays.“It’sacausemyfamilyfeelsgoodaboutsupporting.”Brianisequallyeloquent,“PrincessMargaretisoneoftheworld’stopfivecancerresearchcentres.It’saprivilegetodothiswork.”
Redbrickonthehome’straditionalexteriorspeakstoanEnglishinfluenceandplaysbeautifullywiththeneighbourhood’sheritage.Bycontrast,theinterioristransitionalwithcontemporaryleanings–simplelines,neutralcolours,classicfabrics,lotsoftexture,abundantnaturallightandopenspaces,butwithdefinedanchors.Brianhasaknackforcuttinginterestingsightlinesintosocialspaces.You’redrawneffortlesslythroughroomswhereleafyoutdoorviewsfloodinthroughKolbe Gallery Ontario windows.Aflowingorganicrhythmisatworkhere.Themonochromaticgreypaletteislitwithpopsofcolour,enoughtoaddenergytospacesbutnotenoughtostealfromthecalmingneutralaesthetic.Exotictexturesareintroducedthroughwalltreatmentsandaccessories.Ashowhomeforsure,butatheartit’salusciousbackdropforrelaxedlivingandlaid-backentertaining.
Carlosismodestabouthisroleasbuilder.“Ischeduledthetrades,keptthingsmovingtowardthecompletiondate,achievingwhatBrianwantedwithinthelimitsoftimeandbudget,”hesays.Intruth,there’smuchmoretoit.Brianwantedadramaticsunkenlivingroomwitha12-footceilingandmagnificentarchedwindows,agrandspace.Localheightrestrictionsmovedthechallengebeyondtheordinary.Insteadofbuildingup,theyhadtobuilddown.Carlossketcheditoutonpaperforus.Sufficeittosay,theconceptdemandedadetailedsupportingstructurethatgoesdeeperthangrade,completelyreinforcedandwaterproofed.

BothmengavekudostoarchitectRichardWengle.“He’samasterofclassical,”saysBrian,whoisalsoaclassicalfan.YouseehintsofthisintinydetailslikethevariationoftheGreekkeymeanderonthemasterbed’scounterpane.Thediningroom’sdramaticphotomuralfeaturewallgrewfroma1600sclassicalpainting.Withthelightsonintheevening,itattractsreamsofattention.“Peoplestoptheircarstogetabetterlook,”Briantoldus.
Isitdifficulttodesignforanunknownhomeowner?“That’stheeasypart,”saysBrian.“Itgivesmetheopportunitytotrynewthings.”
OneofCarlos’sfavouriteroomsistheopenlibrarybetweentheupperandlowerlevel.It’soneofthose“newthings”thatBrian
enthusedover.“Ilovesurprisesinahouse,thelibraryfeelsmoreconnectedtotherestofthehousewiththisplacement,”saysBrian.Itsbordeauxwallcolour,texturizedwithred-silkgrasspapermakesastatementagainstdarkoak.
TheLittleBigToproomnestlesnexttothelibrary(picturedonthecover).It’sachild’sbedroom,doneinaboldredcircustheme.Floor-to-ceilingdrapesturnitintoagianttent.It’snosurprisethattheroomsentvisitingkidsintofitsofexcitement.
“Entertainme,”saysthesleekcontemporarykitchen.Theroom’slayoutgrewfromBrian’sdesireforanextra-longisland.“Iwantedtoeliminatethetraditionaltable,”heexplains.Stainlessappliances,includingasteamer,arebuiltintothecountertop.Walls,trimanddoorsarepaintedBenjaminMoore’sCoventryGreyunderpinningthe19-footSymphonyGreyCaeserstoneslabislandandbacksplash.GlossycabinetryisbyPMFineCabinetryInc.Invisibletouch-latchhardware
