PROJECT COMPASSION
Fourth Week of Lent
Evangeline is strengthening Aboriginal culture while making a living and creating opportunities for her community. Featured in Project Compassion during 2016, Evangeline went from seeking employment to being a Senior Artsworker and an inspirational leader for youth. Her work at the non-profit Djilpin Arts Aboriginal Corporation has supported the organisation’s growth and it is now a major employer for young people in the remote Northern Territory community.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help provide employment and training for First Australians, allowing them to remain on country and keep their culture alive; essential for a just future.
A Just Future starts with your support! You can donate through Project Compassion box-
es/envelopes, visit www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phone 1800 024 413.
Year 6 Leaders Day and Leadership Camp
This Friday, our Year 6 student leaders of the school will attend the Halogen National Young Leader’s Day at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre along with young leaders from oth-er schools in WA. Last year over 23,000 students attended this day. These children have been chosen by the school community as they have displayed leadership qualities over the past few years and will have the opportunity to develop further skills on this day. On Monday to Wednesday of next week, the Year 6 classes will leave for their Leadership Camp at Woodman Point where they will spend quality time together and with their teachers. Throughout the camp, the students will be given plenty of opportunities to step outside their comfort zone and take safe and considered risks, developing their resilience and having lots of fun while they are at it! The students will be involved in activities such as raft building, flying fox, archery and a vertical challenge.
Why is developing leadership qualities so important?
In the future, our children will be working in a very different environment. They will be em-ployed in jobs not yet created and it will be their people skills and creativity that will get them through life successfully. In order for this to take place, opportunities to practice being leaders in different situations are valuable. The following list of qualities can be encouraged both at home and at school. Leaders know how to stay authentic to themselves in difficult situations. When faced
with a challenge, they stay true to their values and are unwavering to fads and peer pres-sure.
Leaders are good communicators and open to listening to opinions taking into considera-
tion all parties involved. They foster creativity and are able to work in a collaborative en-vironment. They can work in a team to solve challenges and changing situations.
A successful leader knows when to step up and take charge and when to support from within the group. They know how to delegate as well as to work within the group and are willing to go above and beyond when appropriate.
Leaders learn from mistakes and take these lessons to improve future situations. Leaders are prepared for the worst to happen, they take responsibility for the outcome and stay optimistic.
Leaders are lifelong learners. They search for ways to continue developing their leadership and commu-nication skills.
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum At the end of last year and the beginning of this school year, all staff were trained in the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum. As a school, it is our staff’s responsibility to educate our students about abuse and ways to protect themselves in their environment. The curriculum begins from Kindy and continues till children are in Year 12. The curriculum teaches young people about respectful relationships All children and young people have a right to: be treated with respect and to be protected from harm be asked for their opinions about things that affect their lives and to be listened to feel and be safe in their interactions with adults and other children and young people understand as early as possible what is meant by 'feeling and being safe'. The curriculum follows two main themes: We all have the right to be safe We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust. The two themes are explored through four focus areas: the right to be safe relationships recognising and reporting abuse protective strategies. So, how can you, as a parent, support the Child Protection Curriculum? The following suggestions are from the focus area RIGHT TO FEEL SAFE.
Talk about different emotions and feelings, when you experience them and how to express them appropri-ately
Identify with your child safe and unsafe situations – use stories, movies and real situations to highlight your point
Mention when you get Early Warning Signs in different situations – butterflies in your stomach, sweaty palms, dry mouth, heart racing fast, shivering, etc. This could occur in a range of situations and are usually different for different people
Talk about what you do when you experience Early Warning Signs. Sometimes taking deep breathes, re-moving yourself from a situation and/or talking with someone helps.
Identify different kinds of emergencies – what they look like and sound like, and then what to do if one oc-curs.

THE CARITAS PROJECT COMPASSION WALK 2018
This annual Sacred Heart event is taking place this year on
Friday 23 March at 9.20am. Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be
walking the usual 5km.
The walk is an effective way of raising vital and significant
funds for Project Compassion and for Sister Margie in East Ti-
mor.
Last year the Sacred Heart School community managed to
raise over $7,000. This was due to:
Our families finding sponsors,
Our students completing the walk
And finally, families and students collecting all funds before Term One ended!
Sponsor cards go home this week. On the back of the card you will find useful information about the walk.
PARENT HELP: We need volunteer parents to guard our school entrances and road ways (Vital job!) as well
as to sign sponsor cards every time the students complete a 1km lap. It’s an enjoyable morning so, if you’re
free, we would love to have you ‘on board’.
Please notify your child’s teacher if you can help. ‘First to volunteer’ basis will apply. Many thanks.

LENTEN MESSAGE
We all make grand plans for a complete mind, body and spiritual reboot
for Lent but often things don’t go to plan!! If there was one things to
pick as a Lent ‘must-do’ it’s this:
Take yourself to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Even if your don’t keep your meat-free Fridays, or successfully give up
chocolate, or your family or personal prayer commitments epically fail.
Fifteen minutes in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is more than enough to make a difference to your spiritual
well-being during Lent.
Preparing for Reconciliation is a must. A simple five minutes to slow down and reflect is all you need to make
this sacrament meaningful and significant. One of the most useful tools to help you prepare is an Examination
of Conscience. Catholics are encouraged to examine their conscience everyday and offer a prayer of sorrow.
Having an examination on hand is useful not only for your personal prayer, but the Sacrament of Reconcilia-
tion, whether you go twice a year or twice a week!
2nd Rite of Reconciliation in our Church tonight at 7.00pm with 10 Visiting priests.
SPORT NEWS
2018 House Swimming Carnival Results
Last Thursday was the House Swimming Carnival at Aqualife Aquatic Centre. God blessed us with a beautiful day filled with sunshine. Well done to all the students who challenged themselves whether that be to swim 25m, 50m or just enter into the novelty events. It was great to hear all the cheering in the bays especially in Wright which was wonderfully lead by their captain Amy Therkelsen.
It was great to see so many parents come to support on the day. A massive thank you to the parents who vol-unteered their time whether it be timing, judging or helping to pack away and set up the tents it was greatly appreciated. Especially for those judging as it was rather hot in the sun all day. Your efforts were outstanding.
The Interschool squad information is on the board outside the Library and the squad has already started train-ing. The results of the day are as outlined:

NEXT P & F MEETING
Monday 26 March at 6.30pm
Everyone is welcome and we would love to see some new members.
Coles Sports for Schools Program Thank you so much for collecting the vouchers and placing them in the school’s box at COLES FOREST LAKES or in the school office. If we could make one simple request—it would be that any vouchers being dropped off in the box in the school office be individually cut up. That would be a great fun task for the children to do (with supervision) and would help a great deal in collating them each week. Thank you very much for your co-operation and support with this program.
