ISL Surrey A School for Your Child’s Future
Today, education needs to go beyond getting good
grades in exams. It should connect students to
an ever-evolving world, where technology and
globalisation are pushing the boundaries of the
possible. Today, education must prepare students
to be the critical thinkers and the problem solvers
of tomorrow.
Building on over 40 years of ISL experience,
ISL Surrey provides an education that is widely
recognised to be amongst the best globally,
integrating technology across all levels, and
providing a highly acclaimed, embedded modern
language programme.
More importantly, ISL Surrey is an inclusive learning
community where:
Every new child is welcomed into the community
and classroom.
Every teacher uses a philosophy of fostering reflection
and self-direction.
Everybody respects and celebrates cultural differences.
Every child is treated as an individual through a low
student-teacher ratio that develops talent and provides
needed support.
Every family becomes a part of a vibrant
cultural and social environment.
Welcome to the International School of London Surrey
‘The International School of London,
Surrey provides an outstanding quality
of education…’ OFSTED Report, May 2012
‘ISL is now a very important symbol of
everything we stand for.’ IPC Accreditation, May 2012
ISL Group History
The International School of London is a pioneering
international school that has paved the way for
integrating mother tongue languages into a standard
international curriculum, starting in the Early
Childhood years. Founded in 1972, it was one of the
first International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Schools.
ISL London now offers the IB Diploma as well as the
Primary and Middle Years Programmes.
Today, the majority of students (over twice the
international average) qualify for the prestigious IB
Bilingual Diploma.
In 2008, ISL was selected by the Supreme
Education Council of Qatar as one of the first schools
for its Outstanding Schools Initiative. ISL Qatar is now
authorised to offer the IB Primary Years, Middle Years
and Diploma Programmes.
Continuing with this expansion, Shell UK selected
ISL to transform its Prins Willem Alexander School,
the highest performing Dutch school in the world, to
an international school in August 2009. ISL Surrey
became the first accredited International Primary
Curriculum (IPC) school in the UK in May 2010 and
in June 2012, achieved Mastering, the highest level
of accreditation. ISL Surrey is currently the only UK
school and one of a select few worldwide to achieve
the Mastering level.
These high standards were commended in the UK
Office of Standards in Education (OFSTED) inspection
reports where the school achieved Outstanding
in every category related to quality of education,
curriculum, teaching and overall student development.
ISL Surrey is also a member of the Council of
International Schools.
The ISL Group comprises three schools, enrolling
approximately 1600 students from 90 countries,
teaching 25 languages.
‘ISL Surrey has been awarded IPC accreditation at
‘Mastering’ level. In itself this would be a wonderful
tribute to the hard work, dedication and focus of any
school community and something worth significant
celebration. What is especially good about this
award is that it follows on from your 2010 award at
‘Developing’ level and demonstrates how a school
community can, with focus and the willingness to
model learning, develop considerably in a relatively
short space of time. You and your colleagues have set
a fantastic example to other schools.’
IPC Accreditation Letter, June 2012.
Mission Statement
DiversityPassionIdentityUnderstanding
The International School of London Group is a
culturally diverse community which fosters a
passion and enthusiasm for learning, through
outstanding educational practices. Students’ cultural
and linguistic identities are valued and nurtured
through our international curriculum and Mother
Tongue programme. Our school develops the
attitudes, skills and understanding needed for
active and responsible contributions to both
local and global communities.
At the International School of London, we believe in:
Empowering students to maximise their learning
opportunities and to fulfil their potential.
Actively integrating cultural diversity in
the curriculum.
Creating inclusive, vibrant and innovative
learning communities.
Offering a diverse and extensive international
programme that supports personal, social and
professional growth.
The ISL education philosophy is
based on the following core values
and applies to our students, teaching
and administrative staff:
A commitment to the acquisition of
knowledge and the achievement of
personal potential.
The pursuit of excellence in all
areas of activity and effort.
Respect of self and others including
the recognition of the uniqueness of
each individual.
Social and civic responsibility
which seeks to explore and promote
the common good and values, social
justice, cultural diversity and the
emotional and physical well being
of others.
Concern and respect for the natural
and cultural environment.
Treating all members of the school
community with respect, honesty
and integrity.

Sports, Clubs and After School Activities
The ISL Curriculum brings together the best teaching
practices from many countries and sources, based
on research about how children learn. The aim is to
develop the skills and knowledge our students need for
success in the 21st Century. Our curriculum is inquiry-
based and child-centred, built on a child’s natural
curiosity, yet individualised to help each child progress
to the next stage of learning. Utilising an integrated
approach, topics expand and reinforce learning across
all curricular areas. This creates a healthy attitude
towards learning and allows each student to achieve
his/her potential. Our goal is to form a firm foundation
for subsequent learning in each child, whilst creating
happy and lifelong learners.
The Curriculum and our Teaching Strategies
‘Throughout the school the outstanding curriculum
enables pupils to acquire a very wide base of
knowledge and skills which prepares them
extremely well for the future….the curriculum
skilfully merges the themes and skills…resulting in
extremely rich learning experiences with a strong
international flavour.’
OFSTED Report, May 2012
‘Parents are more than satisfied with the IPC/MYP
methods describing them as ‘a different approach
to learning, but the children seem to remember
a lot of what they learn because they do it on a
project basis, learn things from lots of angles, it
embeds the learning across the subjects.’
Good Schools Guide
Students begin learning a new language at age 3, with
French or Spanish offered as a second language for
primary students. Middle Years students have the
opportunity to study mother tongue and another
foreign language, either French, Spanish or Mandarin.
Mother Tongue Support
Mother tongue support has been shown to help
personal and educational development, empowering
students for future transition to home, another
country, or university. It also forms the foundation
for all subsequent language learning, as a proven
effective tool in learning a second language.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Because English is the language of instruction,
additional support is provided for children who need
English support. Initially, EAL is taught intensively as
a pull-out programme, individually or in small groups.
With time, it evolves into in-class support for as long
as necessary.
Multilingual Learning
‘The mother tongue programme provides
language education that is as close as can be
to the national programme back in our home
countries… We have consciously decided to
educate our children at ISL, as it has a dedicated
mother tongue programme and gives us peace
of mind that our children can keep up with
their three languages and communicate with
their families back on the continent… We were
recently in Paris visiting family. The feedback
of our peers and family was one of positive
surprise: “How come your children speak and
come across like French children?’
Aurora, a French mother
‘ISL Surrey’s home languages programme
was one of the main factors in my decision to
choose the school for my child. As my daughter
is growing up in a multi-lingual, non-English
family, it is crucial for us to be in a school with
strong language learning, good choice of native
and foreign languages, and support for families’
efforts at home. The sessions on bilingualism
were very helpful.’
Lyudmila, a Kazakh mother
Because of low student-teacher ratios, teachers can spend
more one-to-one and small group time with students.
Low student-teacher ratios mean that:
Each student receives more individual attention.
Teachers have a greater understanding of each child’s
learning style and talents.
Classes can adapt to the needs and interests of students,
allowing greater depth of study.
Smaller groups encourage active participation in learning.
Teaching methods emphasise hands-on, concept-based
and individualised learning, rather than rote learning.
Mentor Teachers
‘Classes are small and staff know their pupils
very well. The staff match the varying needs
of pupils closely through targeted support,
differentiated tasks and very effective
grouping and use of resources.’
OFSTED Inspection Report, May 2012
Integrated Technology
Technology is integrated throughout the school to
enhance learning and collaboration, with iPads,
interactive white boards, LCD touch screens, computers
and laptops incorporated across all age levels.
Early Childhood students use LCD touch screens to
explore the world and to practise letter formation on
screen. Primary pupils research, publish and present
their work using technology. Most of the Middle School
humanities and science curriculum is delivered via iPads.
Teachers regularly Skype their colleagues in London or
Qatar for curriculum collaboration.
‘Middle school kids say the best thing about ISL
Surrey is the iPads… The Head of School was
keen to introduce this as part of the new school’s
move to digital learning…. ‘Students need to
understand how to use this technology because
that’s how they will interface with their world
when they leave us.’
Good Schools Guide
Our primary curriculum is drawn from a
variety of international sources and adapted
to the needs of our multicultural population,
resulting in a curriculum that is a beacon for
best practice, providing every student with
on-going cognitive, physical, emotional and
social support and opportunities.
Children learn through play. Whether it is about
planting daffodils or writing letters in sand, a wide
range of activities help children discover their
world. Through the early childhood multi-sensory
programme, children build on their natural curiosity
and delight in experimenting with the environment
around them. A typical class day varies to include
individual, small, or large group settings and a
variety of activities that touch on every aspect of the
curriculum. The programme is age appropriate and
adaptable to the many different paces of development
for an early childhood learner.
‘ISL Surrey has been and continues to be
a wonderful experience for our family.
The warmth and compassion, passion,
flexibility, and diversity of the entire
school’s staff have opened our child’s mind
to the possibilities of the world. We are
very thrilled to have found this school.’

Primary Overview
Building on the same child-centred and
developmental approach used in Early Childhood,
Primary students remain with their main classroom
teacher for the core subjects: language arts,
numeracy, humanities, and science. Mother
tongue, music and physical education (including
swimming for 6 and 7 year olds) are taught by
specialist teachers. Students follow the International
Primary Curriculum (IPC), a globally-recognised
curriculum which helps students understand
the interconnectedness of subjects. ISL Surrey
is accredited at the Mastering Level, the highest
accreditation possible, which places it amongst a
few elite schools worldwide.
‘The overall quality of the provision is
outstanding. The exceptionally positive
and motivated approach of staff, and
their commitment to promoting children’s
learning and meeting their individual
needs is a key strength of the provision.
Partnership with parents is exemplary.’
OFSTED Nursery Inspection Report
December 2010 in which the programme
was rated Outstanding in every category
‘I can see my child is happy going to
Nursery, and always has a very good
time… At this age it is very important
to receive a lot of love and trust. We
are very happy and also very lucky to
have found such a nice nursery. It will
be a very memorable time for us.’ A Nursery mother

‘I would like to say that ISL Surrey
has taken a very anxious family and
has guided us through a confusing
and difficult school transition
with much compassion and
reassurance… The professionalism
of the staff and teachers has
confirmed our decision that our
child’s educational placement in ISL
Surrey was the most optimal choice
for us. They are truly an inclusive
and not exclusive programme that
shows care and concern for every
child enrolled in its programme.’
A Middle School Parent
‘ISL Surrey is a place that students from
all over of the world can call ‘home’.
From the moment you walk into the
school, you feel very welcome. The
faculty and staff couldn’t be more
approachable and friendly.’
A Middle School Parent
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides
students with learning attitudes appropriate to
adolescents in a global society. It is a framework
for an academically rigorous curriculum, which
encourages international-mindedness, nurtures
lifelong learning skills, and equips students to adapt
to the challenges of an ever-shrinking world.
Attributes of the programme include:
iPad Technology Programme. Each student receives
an iPad to help them become familiar and confident
with technology.
Middle Years ProgrammeAGES

The Mentor Teacher. Small tutorial groups work
collaboratively. One-to-one time with specialist teachers
provides academic support, challenges curious minds,
and differentiates learning for students.
The Open World Experience. Once a week, students
participate in a regular cycle of planning, experiencing
and reflecting on student-directed activities that expand
on passions, interests and issues raised in the classroom.
This is designed to involve students in their academic
growth, all the while getting them to think about future
career paths.
ISL Surrey is a candidate school for the International
Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and is pursuing
authorisation as an IB World School. Candidate status
gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted.
Middle Years Programme Grades 6-10
Secondary Overview
‘It was the kids rather than the school
that told us about ‘Open World’ which
they describe as ‘a programme where
every student shares their passions,
what we’re interested in for careers, lots
of trips…. It makes ISL unique. It keeps
our minds open to new possibilities. For
most of our trips we do things you are
not normally able to do.’ Good Schools Guide
‘Pupils of secondary school age
benefit from good careers guidance.
The curriculum is resourced well
and greatly enhanced by a rich
programme of educational visits
and extra-curricular activities.’
OFSTED Report, May 2012
‘The London School of Economics
regards the IB as one of the most
useful qualifications that its students
can have. We have been told by the
IB Office that we have more students
who have the IB qualification than
any other university in the world
and we find the students excellent in
every way.’
Dr John Ashworth, Director, London
School of Economics
ISL Surrey fulfils its vision of combining
intellectual rigour and high academic standards
with a strong emphasis on the ideals of
international understanding and responsible
citizenship by being a candidate school for the
IB Middle Years and the IB Diploma Programmes.
Candidate status gives no guarantee that
authorisation will be granted.
The academically rigorous IB Diploma is
increasingly sought by competitive universities
through the world.
Diploma Programme Grades 11-12
AGES
16 TO18
Students maintain both breadth and depth by
studying six courses, three at a higher or more
intensive level and three at a standard level.
In addition, students complete:
An Extended Essay which is a 4000-word,
university level research paper.
150 hours of creative, active and service
(CAS) activities.
A Theory of Knowledge course.
Diploma Programme
Secondary Overview
‘In fact very many admissions tutors
would argue that the International
Baccalaureate is superior to A-Level
in that it offers both breadth as well as
depth of study.’ Dr J Foreman, Senior Tutor, University
College, London
‘Because the IB differentiates better
than A-level; if we are hesitating about
making an offer at all, we would be
more likely to make an offer to an IB
student than an A-level student.’
Dr Geoff Parks, Director of Admissions,
Cambridge
Faculty
ISL Surrey teachers have the time, commitment
and strong desire to work with every child, at his
or her developmental level. This helps students
achieve their goals.
All teachers are qualified, many with advanced
degrees, with previous experience in national and/
or international schools. Additionally, there is great
support for continuous professional development
with regular in-house workshops conducted by
curriculum consultants and trainers. Teaching at
the school was especially commended in
recent inspections.
‘Teachers communicate exceptionally well
with parents about the learning intentions
through detailed IPC newsletters, planned and
informal discussions about children’s learning
and through the learning conferences. All
teachers help parents become engaged in their
children’s learning…’
IPC Accreditation Report, May 2012
‘The staff are well qualified and their passion
motivates pupils to achieve their full
potential. They establish very positive working
relationships in their classes based on mutual
respect, enabling pupils to learn in a calm and
purposeful atmosphere.’
OFSTED Report, May 2012
Sports, Clubs and After School ActivitiesISL Surrey provides a wide range of after school
clubs and sporting activities in order to help students
make friends, develop confidence in themselves, and
learn a variety of new skills. For students whose first
language is not English, after school activities play a
major role in helping the students practise English in
an informal setting. Clubs are offered throughout the
year, be it for one term or for the full length of the
academic year. Additionally, the student council plays
an active role in the life of the school.
After school activities are provided for every age,
Monday through Thursday, many at no additional
cost. Some examples include:

Communication between the School and FamilyGood communication between home and school
is essential for a child’s emotional growth and
academic success. At ISL Surrey, parents have regular
opportunities to learn about the curriculum through
parents’ evenings and meetings.
Parent/Teacher conferences provide an opportunity
to discuss student progress and are held twice a year.
Three-way conferences actively involve parents,
students and teachers in reflecting on student
achievement, discussing work samples and setting
future goals. Written reports are produced twice per
academic year, and classroom teachers are always
available for informal queries.
Class Parents, the PTA and the SAC
ISL Surrey is a culturally diverse community
where parents, teachers and administration
all work together for the betterment of the
students and the school in a variety of ways,
from coordinating various activities and
setting out the programme to taking part in a
consultative body.
Class parents assist with celebrations and
activities in the classroom.
The Parents and Teachers Association supports
the education and well-being of the students
and helps to organise and support school
events such as the winter holiday dinner, music
evenings and sports days.
The School Advisory Committee consists of
parent and faculty representatives and the Head
of School. The meetings provide a forum for
the exchange of ideas and to discuss plans and
policy implementation.
Additionally, parents volunteer their time as part
of the Crossroads Transition, Parent Buddy and
Language Representative Programmes.
‘ISL children are a truly endearing bunch
and very chatty. Despite diversity of
nationality, heritage and language, they
seem to feel a true sense of belonging to
the school and to each other. On the day
we visited we met very young children
there on their first or second day, and they
were settled, happy and fully engaged.’

‘Although the Visitor was on site for a short
time, there appears to be a very warm
and supportive atmosphere at ISL Surrey.
The configuration of rooms, open space,
garden areas and other resources make
for a lovely, welcoming setting. The school
song, ‘You are Welcome in our School’ is
indicative of the climate at ISL Surrey.’
Quote from Council of International
Schools Membership Visit, November 2011
Relocating across the country or around the world
can be an exciting time for any family, but the on-
going success of that transition frequently depends on
the support and welcome from the new community.
To assist in the successful relocation, students in
grades 3 and above participate in a residential trip
which builds teamwork and helps forge friendships
amongst the participants.
Through a variety of initiatives, including summer
picnics, welcome teas, parenting workshops, the
parent choir and numerous social events, parents
may participate in:
The Crossroads Transition Team which helps
children, families and staff adapt quickly to the school
community, through many initiatives including Parent
Buddies and Language Representatives.
English as an Additional Language Classes which
provide new language learning for many of the
parents as well as a new social venue.
Very quickly families begin participating in the vibrant
life of the school community, making new friends and
sharing new experiences, and joining the many sports,
arts and recreational activities.
Transitions
‘The English classes for the parents were something
that my wife really needed and enjoyed. She started
as a beginner with a bit of knowledge built back from
Russia. The international mothers community built
around this class helped her to learn, after the class
as well, through a regular interaction with other class
moms outside of the class. This is great and I see how
my wife is gaining confidence with English and can
handle any situation on her own.’
