Q3 Essential Question

Thompson

WARNING!!!!!! Please note that Mrs. Thompson does not

condone the dehumanization of another human being, nor does she approve of

crude or inappropriate language. However, for this activity we will be

looking at society and societal views; therefore, the words we may say and/or

write down are important, but please keep calm and be respectful as our goals are NEVER to harm another human being.

AKA… keep it PG-13

Bell Ringer: Boxes

"Act Like a Man" & “Act like a Lady”

1. Draw two boxes and write “Act like a man” on top of one and “Act Like a Lady” on top of the other.

2. What does it mean to “act like a man” or “act like a lady”? What are the expectations of each of these statements (which may not be the reality)?

3. Inside the boxes, write down what characteristics and traits these statements require.

4. What are names applied to persons who don’t fit this statement? What things can happen to people not fitting the criteria of one of these statements? (write these outside the box and around the box)

Discussion What lessons could be learned from this

exercise?

Do you believe men and women are stereotyped? If so, why? By whom?

Do you believe that men and women are given gender roles to live up to?

NOTESGender:

the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).

Stereotype: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified

image or idea of a particular type of person or thing

Fallacy: a mistaken belief, esp. one based on

unsound argument

Gender, Stereotype, FallacyYou will be looking at a handful

of images. For each image you need to write the gender, stereotypes (gender roles,

judgments based on image, etc.), and a particular fallacy that may exist based on the

gender or stereotyped you’ve identified.

Homework• Percentages Worksheet

• On the spaces provided indicate what percent (%) of doing the job or taking the role you believe should be assigned to a female? Male? Percentages can range from 0% to 100%, but must total 100%. Be honest.

Bell Ringer: Gender Roles

• In groups of three or four, compare your personal views. Discuss the following questions:

1. Why do you think your personal views are similar and/or different?

2. Who do you believe is responsible for teaching us these roles?

3. Have gender roles always remained the same? How so?

**Be ready to share your answers and discuss as a whole group**

Society’s View

• In your same groups, complete the same sheet as you did last night, but this time, you must complete it looking at it from a bigger lens (societal viewpoint).

• We will compare out answers, along with the distinctions between personal and societal.

Reflecting on the activities and discussions that we have had the past few days, please write a ½ -1 page response answer the following questions thoroughly:

What is the role of gender in this country? Are these roles essential for our society?

Have gender roles changed based on your experiences or background knowledge? Why

or why not?

***Explain. Elaborate. Expand. ***
