Guess who is coming to dinner?Bardolino has finally stopped worrying about - or trying to emulate - its better - known

neighbours. Its return to authenticity is serving it well, says Kerin O’Keefe

“At the beginning of this century, consumers wanted wines resembling popular Australian bottlings; darkly coloured, high in alcohol and pow-erfully strucutred explains Franco Cristoforetti of Villabella, the larg-est private Bardolino producer, from the heart of the Bardolino Classico zone in the denomination’s original growing area. “So in 2001 producers created the denomination DOCG, that permitted international varie-ties, had lower yelds and longer age-ing requirements. We also changed Bardolino DOC’S production code to allow international grapes into the blend, namely Cabernet and Merlot, to add body and colour and to make Bardolino more appealing to inter-national palates” Cristoforetti recalls how winemakers and growers began experimenting with other ways of concentrating Bardolino; harvesting late when grapes were overripe, and using longer maceration periods to extract more colour and tannins “But we soon realised that these measures didn’t improve Bardolino, they only changed its typicity” he says

Piccoli vini crescono...Da uve corvina, rondinella e un pizzico di corvinone. Villabella è proprio bella. Più di duecento ettari collocati sulle colline che dominano il Garda. Questo Bardolino ha un colore appena più cupo degli altri, e i profumi ricordano la marasca ed il ribes. Sapore pieno, con qualche accenno tanni-co, da vino ancora giovane.
