May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do
and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
Recently I wrote about our Parish Council and Finance Council. Today I want to keep you informed about another administrative
body of our parish that helps me. Our newly created Facilities and Maintenance Team is responsible for assisting me in the physical
campus needs of our buildings and infrastructure such as heating and air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing issues, just to name a
few. This team also works closely with our Director of Operations and Finance. One very valuable task they are working on is to
plan long term for the needs of our parish and school buildings and physical plant. They have worked on projects such as the new
lighting in church, the interior courtyard renovations and multiple air-conditioning issues. They have tackled smaller projects around
the campus as well. You may not always see the work of this team but they are often behind the scenes ensuring we have facilities
that are kept up for all of us to enjoy. The members of this team are:
Frank Fick – Chair Nathan Farrow Thad Pieper Dan Chumley
They work closely with Bill Fulhorst, our Director of Operations and Bruce Huggins, our Facilities and Maintenance
Supervisor.
You may have noticed that the clothing drop boxes and the newspaper recycling dumpsters have been removed from our campus.
After consultation with the Parish Council, it was decided to remove them for a variety of reasons. Many people remember the days
when there were not many places to take your paper for recycling thus you started seeing these recycle bins pop up. At one point,
someone told me that our bins produced so much that our parish was one of the top recycling locations. In addition, there was a
rebate kickback for hosting the company’s dumpster. However, over time, garbage companies started picking up recycling at your
curb and then the paper recycling market changed eliminating the rebates. We received a very minimal rebate these days compared
to the years past. In addition, clothing donation boxes started showing up everywhere. These were convenient places for people to
take unwanted clothing that was still in good shape.
Unfortunately, over time these resources became a big problem. Our location on a busy street created easy access for dumpers of
waste in which they didn’t want to pay for. Most recently a dismantled hot tub and torn out plumbing were placed by the receptacles
and had to be removed at parish expense. Our maintenance staff was spending more time cleaning things up than doing other duties.
The clothing bins were constantly being broken into and everything other than clothing was littering our property. In addition, the
safety of our school children and others is of utmost importance. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you but want you
to know that the decision to remove these bins was not taken lightly. Here are some alternative donation/recycle locations:
Clothing Donations:
Feed My People - 171 Kingston Dr., St. Louis, MO 63125

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?” - MATTHEW 16:26
St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you
are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this
stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and
treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our
priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the
material world.

One of the most beneficial sources of inspiration in our Catholic
Faith is the lives of the saints. The saints, like Christ, offer us a
vast number of ways in which we can deny ourselves, take up
our cross, and follow the Lord. The penances that saints have
taken on through the centuries are excellent models for us and
give us ideas for denying ourselves and thus surrendering our
lives to Christ. Extra prayer, fasting, sleeping on the ground,
waking up in the middle of the night to pray, abstaining from
alcohol, etc. are just a few of the many actions we can take to
grow closer to Christ. What is essential to remember is that
these practices must not become a source of pride for us. We
must focus on how the actions draw us closer to Christ and
allow us to participate in His divine life. We must remember
that God must be the source and goal of all of our thoughts,
words, and actions. He is worth the sacrifices that we make.

Fast . Secure. Easy .
Before we get lost in the hustle and bustle of the new school
year, take time to enjoy family:
How about an end-of-summer family game night? Let the
kids decide what to play but be sure all electronics are off
and not interfering.
No kids? How about a game of cards with mom or Scrabble
with the uncle that you haven't seen since Christmas?
If there's no family around try arranging a lunch or dinner
with friends, or become the friend of someone in a nursing
home. They're always looking for volunteers to visit.
You may have noticed a
new white envelope in
your SFA giving
envelope packet this
month. For your
convenience, we've added
a self-addressed envelope
for use in case you miss
Mass any time during the
month. This will allow
you to mail in your
contribution. Thank you
always for your
stewardship in support
of our parish!

The PSR program has begun. We have 13 catechists
evangelizing our parish children in grades 1-8. There are 128
students, 15 who are participating in the online religion class
because of time constraints or because a parent wants to be their
child’s teacher. This program follows the same curriculum as
students who attend class on Monday evenings. Thank you for
prayers for our young church as they learn to love Jesus and
become His disciples.
Eternal Rest, grant to them,
O Lord. And let perpetual light
shine upon them. May they rest
in peace. Amen.
St. Francis students grew in their global awareness recently due
to connections to our amazing teachers. Third grade teacher
aide, Mrs. Gina Faust and teacher, Miss Becky Warren invited
Pastor Valentin and Pastor Salou of the village of Yako in
Burkina Faso, a country in Africa, to visit the class last week.
Mrs. Faust met these pastors and Pastor Jeff Riddering of
Gateway House of Prayer and Southgate Church in Crestwood
through her mission work in Africa. Pastor Valentin runs an
orphanage in Burkina Faso that is supported by Sheltering
Wings of Lebanon, Missouri. While in town visiting Pastor
Jeff, Pastors Valentin and Salou stopped in third grade to share
pictures and video of their orphanage, of a church service there,
and to share what it is like to attend school there. Pastor Salou
is building a new school for the orphans at this time. The
children learned a great deal, including what the saying, “it
takes a village” means. Both Pastors Valentin and Salou have 5
foster children each living with them in addition to their own
children. There are more children than adults in Burkina Faso
due to the high mortality rate caused by malaria in that region.
The students were prepared for their visit and asked wonderful
questions. Before the visitors left, the students asked if they
could collect school supplies to send for Pastor Salou’s new
school. The pastors were grateful for the offer. Father Pollman
welcomed the visitors to St. Francis and led a prayer as students
blessed them and prayed for safe travel back to their homeland.
On Tuesday of this week, students had a Google Hangout with
St. Francis alumna, Kate Herries (daughter of our science teach-
er/STREAM coordinator/teacher-of-the-year Mike Herries) off
the coast of Hawaii. Kate, a graduate student at the University
of Hawaii is currently conducting research on sea level changes
using geochemical dating techniques on fossilized coral reefs.
She is aboard the oceanographic research vessel (RV) Falkor of
the Schmidt Institute. That’s where we “hung out” with Kate.
Our visit with Kate was just the beginning of an amazing year
of focus on water conservation. Mr. Herries attended the
Swarovski Waterschool Program last summer and brought this
program to SFA. Swarovski has been leading workshops and
establishing Waterschools in other countries since 2000. As one
of its new Waterschools, SFA will be learning about water
conservation, water availability, and building awareness about
such challenges
with others
around the world.
In fact, there are
Waterschools in
Uganda so we
may be able to
connect with Fr.
Joseph in this
way. Stay tuned!

What happens when you need a friend and there is no one there? Having no one to turn to in a moment of need is a trying experience
for anyone, but especially the poor. Are you willing to be a friend to the poor?
For nearly two centuries, the poor and needy of the world have found a friend in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This year, on
September 30th, the Society will hold its annual Friends of the Poor Walk. Our St. Francis of Assisi council encourages all
parishioners, youth, and business sponsors to participate, either as a walker, making a pledge, or as a sponsor, and become Friends of
the Poor. Pledges made on behalf of walkers from our St. Francis of Assisi parish will benefit those most in need in our parish
boundaries. You can pledge online at: https://goo.gl/nYY4Kr
We will be walking on September 30th, 2017. We will walk one mile with option for 2.5 mile course. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
There will be prayers, music, and a meet & greet. Over the years, different parishes have joined with us. Each parish keeps their own
donated funds.

The following was a blog post from Good Shepherd Children and Family Services
on August 25, 2017, retrieved from https://goodshepherdstl.org/thank-st-francis:
Good Shepherd clients and staff were graciously invited to join St. Francis of Assisi Parish
School in Oakville to partake in their eclipse festivities on Monday, August 21. Staff
members and clients – three young moms and two babies – headed from Good Shepherd to
St. Francis to be in full totality of the eclipse. With a focus on STREAM (science, technolo-
gy, religion, engineering, art, and math), the staff at St. Francis had plenty of activities
planned to learn about both the scientific as well as theological aspects of the eclipse.
Mike Herries, computer and science teacher at St. Francis, utilized the eclipse as a learning
opportunity for students, teachers, and parents alike. Each student was prepared with eclipse
glasses and a demonstration on how to safely view the eclipse. Before totality, the school
gathered in the gym to watch the live stream of the NASA footage of the eclipse across the
country and learn about what causes the eclipse. Fr. Anthony Yates, pastor at St. Francis,
led the assembly in prayer to give thanks for the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. As
totality occurred right after lunch, we brought bag lunches and snacks, including Starbursts,
Moon Pies, Sunkist soda, Milky Ways, and Sunmaid raisins.
Soon, it was time to head outside with our glasses to view the totality of the eclipse. As the moon inched towards fully covering the sun, students
took notes of changes: darkness, insects chirping, and changes in bird flight. They were equipped with pinhole projectors to note changes in
shadows and thermometers to measure changes in temperature. We were blown away by the beauty of the totality of the eclipse and the “ring” that
was created by the moon and the sun aligned. It was a magnificent sight to behold and a wonderful experience for our clients (and staff) to have
partaken in.
Our staff and clients are so grateful to St. Francis Parish and School for their hospitality in inviting Good Shepherd to join them for the eclipse. This
parish’s generosity towards our clients goes back many years, as Good Shepherd is one of the beneficiaries of the parish’s Christmas “Giving Tree”
drive and various parish ministries support the work that we do. We greatly appreciated their inclusion of our clients in their festivities for the
eclipse as well. Not only did they offer for us to join in the activities for students, but also provided the parish’s rectory basement for a safe,
air-conditioned, and private space for our young moms and babies to spend time in while we waited for the eclipse. It was a fun, educational outing
for our clients and a truly amazing experience. Thank you, St. Francis of Assisi Parish and School!

We would like to welcome the McKitrick, McCraw, Thompson,
Sanchez, and Molnar families to our par ish. A par ish is a
community of believers and a spiritual family that is supportive and
loving. It can be a place to grow spiritually, to put your faith in action,
and to use our gifts of time and talent as disciples of Christ.
