Are you wondering what to do with your Palms your received last year? As sacramentals they are dedicated to the service of the Lord. They should be treated respec ully.
When their usefulness is gone, they should be dis‐posed of respec ully, by burning and then burying the
ashes. Sacramentals that cannot be burned should be broken and the pieces buried. This is to make sure they
cannot be used for profane purposes. You may also return your palms from last year to the church (box in social hall) and we will take care of the disposal for you.
Young Church Religious Educa on Reflec ons
St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis
What specifically are the youth
learning about in Youth Ministry? The middle school youth are in the middle of a special eight‐week course, learning
the Theology of the Body which explores the dignity of the human person and how
we make God present to each other through our bodies. The high school youth are
exploring the Scriptures, through a mixture of study and Lec o Divina (Chris an
medita on on the Scriptures).
Lent? The What and the Why: What is Lent and why do we have it? Lent is not something you get from your
clothes dryer; it is a season of the Church year that is very
important to our happiness as human beings. Lent is living
the flood of Noah in the Ark, the desert experience Israel
as they were purified of their sins and doubts, and espe‐
cially the desert experience of Jesus a er His Bap sm as
He prepared for His ministry. We join ourselves to these
past events, and they are made present again today in the
season of Lent. Like Noah, we need a me to separate
ourselves from the evils of our day, to have a sanctuary in
the Church where we find safety. Like the Israelites, we
bring sins and weaknesses with us and we need to face ourselves without outside
distrac ons. Like Jesus, we are called to invite others to freedom, and we need to be
prepared to do that well by simplifying our lives in the “desert” of Lent. In short,
Lent should shape you into someone who is more closely united to Christ and pre‐
pared to share Christ with others. What does this look like for you?
Preparing for a Good Lent: Ask yourself these or similar ques ons: What do I give
greatest a en on to in my life? Is it God and what He wills
for me or something else? What do I think is important for
my happiness? Is there anything in my life that have/do
that makes me hide from what I should be doing? How do
I feel about giving these things up? (The greater our sadness at goodness, the more
we need change.) How can I simplify my life?
Did you know? The largest consumers of Internet pornography are kids ages 12 to 17. The parent‐only DVD‐based work‐shop will be feature Internet safety experts from Covenant Eyes and experts in the subject of the dangers of pornography. Invite your neighbors and friends! Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 26, 2017
Can a mother forget her infant,
be without tenderness for the child of her womb?
Even should she forget, I will never forget you.
— Isaiah 49:15
MAKE THIS LENT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, NOT WHAT
YOU DON’T DO!
Last Week for Sign‐Ups! Lent is a me to renew our faith — something that requires prayer and reflec on. In a small community we can see how Jesus himself, although he was o en on the move and o en engaged with crowds of people, al‐ways took me for silence and pray‐er; we realize how important it is for us to do the same. Live Lent! will pro‐vide the opportunity. Make the deci‐sion to take the me this Lent for qui‐et, prayer and sharing in a small group. The faith‐sharing book also provides medita ons you can use on all the other days of Lent. It’s not too late! Sign‐ups con nue the week of February 25‐26, 2017. Members of the Educa on Commission will be there to answer ques ons and assist you with the sign‐up process. If join‐ing a group is not possible, you can purchase the book for $5.00 for use on your personal Lenten Journey.

The Season of Fas ng is Near Ash Wednesday of 2017 falls on March 1. This will begin the holy season of Lent that encourages the faithful to offer a bit of suffering in or‐der to unite themselves more closely with Christ’s me of prayer and fas ng in the de‐sert. In the book of Tobit the Archangel Raphael instructs, “Prayer is good when accompanied by fas ng, almsgiving, and righteousness.” 12:8.
Of those three points the Church provides guidelines for fas ng: The Code of Canon Law prescribes (Canons 1250‐1252):
Can. 1250: The peniten al days and mes in the uni‐versal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent.
Can. 1251: Abs nence from meat, or from some oth‐er food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abs nence and fas ng are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Can. 1252: The law of abs nence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fas ng binds those who have a ained their majority, un l the beginning of their six eth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fas ng and abs nence, are taught the true meaning of penance.
The following are the rules for fas ng as set by the USCCB: Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain
from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.
Every person between the age of 18 and 59 (your 59th birthday begins your 60th year) must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat on all other Fridays of the year, unless he or she subs tutes some other form of penance for abs nence.
The Church defines fas ng as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quan ty.
