Sixth Form Awards Evening 2016 –Winners Citations
Geography – Cameron MacPhee
Cameron has proven to be an outstanding student over the
last two years in the A level Geography class. Always engaged
and keen to contribute Cameron is one of those students
who is essential to the dynamics of a class and will, as a
result, bring the best out of his peers and his staff. His
interest in the natural world (and conquering it through any
outdoor activity imaginable) resulted in a natural leaning to
physical geography, but Cameron’s desire to succeed means
that he performed well in any topic placed before him. He
even managed how to learn to write an essay, testimony to
anyone that with perseverance you can “get there”!
Cameron is well respected by both staff and his peers, not
only for his ability and commitment to achieve, but for his humour and humanity. His contributions
in debates and arguments highlighted a thoughtful approach that carefully considers the views of
others, before deciding upon a justified conclusion of his own. He has been a pleasure to have in the
class and has been a real credit not only to the geography department, but also to the School, the
Sixth Form and his family. We wish him well in the future.
World Development – Lucy Jones
Lucy is a model student who has been a tremendous asset to
the School and Sixth Form. She has been the most committed
and tenacious student I have had the pleasure of teaching this
year and she deserves huge success this summer. This course
demands not only that you learn and understand information,
but that you fully and deeply take the time to consider that
other people may have very contrasting views and opinions on
the huge global, ethical issues studied. This requires an
empathy, compassion and thoughtfulness that Lucy has in
abundance. This is what marks her out as a special student. She
endeavours to learn, discover and improve with intensity and
dedication, but she feels, thinks and expresses, with equal
measure. I have been amazed with Lucy’s efficiency. She can hand in an essay and receive it back the
next day and the following day it will be on your desk again, already improved with every suggestion
made. Such an attitude will only see her go on to excel in anything that she puts her mind to. All of
this is equally balanced with a sunny disposition, a can do attitude and an incredibly pleasant
manner. Lucy is a student to be proud of …….. and we are!
Law – Amy Wells
Amy has always displayed the utmost commitment to improve as a
student. She has proven herself to be incredibly hard working student.
She will meet every deadline, complete all tasks set and beyond that
will consistently apply any advice given by staff to ensure that she
continues to gain improved outcomes. Her contributions in lesson have
always been highly valued by the rest of the class as she speaks with
accuracy and clarity and her strong opinions are always justified and
supported. In addition to this she is thoroughly pleasant and polite and
a credit to the school. Amy has high aspirations and an attitude to
match. Whatever she sets her mind to, she achieves and I feel sure that
this will lead to success in the future. Well done Amy
Driffield Sixth Form Endeavour Award – Phoebe Barr
Phoebe has shown herself to be the most remarkable individual
over her time in the Sixth Form. In regard to her studies she has
displayed a single minded desire to achieve and excel in a manner
that can only be admired and marvelled at. She is driven to achieve
the best that she can possibly produce in all that she sets her mind
to and this was displayed through the extensive notes made,
revision carried out and exam practice completed. Her work ethic
was almost intimidating at times! All of this has also been carried
out whilst Phoebe has experienced prolonged periods of ill health
that saw her continue her studies in an independent manner whilst
in hospital. Many students find A levels a challenging enough
experience, without needing to study large parts of them on their
own. Phoebe has been supported by staff throughout, but the majority of what she has done has
been self-determined, self-driven and in that respect, she has been nothing short of a little miracle.
To see her arrive back in school to sit her exams was fantastic but to witness her open an envelope
in the summer to see the rewards she so richly deserves, will surpass even that. We are incredibly
proud of Phoebe; her character, her example and her achievements and look forward to hearing of
her meteoric rise in the world of Psychology.
Driffield Sixth Form Community Award – Emily Hood
Any academic establishment should be greater than the sum of its
parts. When students, staff and parents unite then it creates a
community that can progress, aspire and excel. Some students play a
significant role in creating this kind of ethos and Emily is one such
student. She is an individual of great compassion and enthusiasm
whose ready smile and considerate approach to all has made her
highly valued by both staff and her peers. Emily has always been ready
to offer encouragement to any initiative the staff have aimed to
implement, working hard to bring about success. She offers the same
level of support to other students from any year group, and has worked to ensure that all feel
included and cared for. Emily has always contributed massively to the PE department, taking part in
a variety of teams and supporting staff with the younger students. In addition to this Emily has been
an excellent ambassador for the school carrying out work placements in local primary schools. This
experience has seen her decide upon a career as a primary school teacher and we are convinced that
she will thrive in this role. Her warm heart, commitment to excel and desire to be the best person
she possibly can be, will make her an excellent role model to any students that are fortunate enough
to have Emily as their teacher.
Rotary Club of Driffield Award for outstanding personal progress – Ben Ashton
The Rotary Club is a group of dedicated people who through
community involvement and friendship aim to impact the
world and area around them for the common good. It is
therefore only right that a student who displays these values
in their life, both within school and without, should receive
this award. Ben is a student who we admire greatly within the
Sixth Form. Partly because of his outstanding attitude towards
his studies, but also due to his high levels of personal integrity
and desire to always present the best version of himself to
both his peers and staff. Ben has an enthusiasm that knows no
bounds; be that hiking across ridiculous distances in the Netherlands, solving mathematical
problems, promoting debate on a wide range of issues, or pursuing his dream career in the Navy.
Ben gives of himself 110% in all that he sets his mind and his heart to and this is what makes his
progress such a joy to watch. It has been a pleasure to watch the arc of Ben’s development over the
last two years, seeing him encounter and overcome obstacles and knocks, to become the
outstanding young man we see today. His commitment has been total and we have been thrilled to
see him pass challenge after challenge in the Naval recruitment process. We feel like we have
walked with him every step of the way as he has kept us informed (at length!) about the process.
However, it is not just Ben’s endeavour that has been a pleasure to see, it has also been his
humanity. He cares deeply about the well-being of others and will sacrifice his own time and place so
that others can achieve. This sets him apart as an outstanding nominee for this award and we
warmly and genuinely wish him well for his future. The sky’s the limit!
Music - Sophie Walker
Sophie has had a huge impact on the music department over the past 7
years. She has always contributed well in class, unafraid of tackling
challenges and able to stretch herself and seek opportunities to be
curious, accompanied by a sense of humour and a desire to learn.
She has a dignity and a professionalism that enable her to participate in a
variety of settings; running a lower school orchestra, assisting in a KS3
class, contributing to school ensembles, being a rehearsal pianist,
organising concerts, playing at County and National level, reaching
exceptionally high standards of performance (having achieved her
Diploma a year ago) playing professionally around the country and being
involved in the Original Cast Recording of a brand new musical last year, Brass.
Sophie understands what it takes to be successful and she does not give up easily. She is ready for a
new challenge and exciting adventures await her at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
We would like to thank Sophie for her loyalty and commitment to the music department and look
forward to hearing all about her new experiences in London.
George Walker - Drama
George has shown 100% dedication and
commitment to Drama and works extremely hard
to be the best he can. George has the ability to
almost disappear into the role he is playing,
creating highly convincing parts that are perfectly
natural. The range of characters he is able to
portray is superb, whether this is showing
exceptional comic timing or portraying pure despair
and sensitivity. One of George’s main qualities is his
hunger to improve; he is extremely open to feedback and seeks advice when needed.
George is a student that has shown pure dedication to extra-curricular activity. His
commitment to Our House, The Wedding Singer and DNA was conducted with complete
professionalism. George created a phenomenal voice for the singing plant, Audrey 2 from
the Little Shop of Horrors. He was outstanding in this role and brought a lot of comedy into
the part. It was also an opportunity to develop his singing skills, which he improved
remarkably well throughout the process.
I am confident that George will go on to have a very successful career in the arts. As a
department we are extremely pleased to see how far he has come. Over his 7 years at the
school he has developed into a mature young man with a real sense of humour and
kindness. George is a worthy winner of this award and we wish him the best of luck in the
future.
Mr Colley and Mrs Bilton
Creative Writing - Annabelle Collins
From the very first lessons of the Creative Writing course,
Annabelle’s flair, creativity and attention to detail made her work
stand out.
Annabelle’s love of fantasy fiction meant that there was a brief
period of adjustment a few weeks into the course (as I cruelly
instigated a temporary ban on her writing about magic, zombies
and angels!), but this quickly led to her developing a sophisticated
voice that really showcased her talent.
By the end of the course, Annabelle was writing incredibly well-
crafted and inventive literary fiction that really was a joy to read.
Many people have a real desire to be a writer, and many people
fall in love with the romantic image of ‘the writer’, but real writers…write! Annabelle is a real writer.
She writes because she enjoys it; she writes because she needs to write.
I know that Annabelle will go on to craft original and compelling material in future, and wish her all
the best in everything that she does.
Biology Ryan Bush
Ryan has consistently proven himself to be one of the most dedicated
and self-motivated pupils. He approaches his studies with great humour
and with an acute awareness of his own strengths and weaknesses. He
demonstrates such resilience that this awareness never lowers his
confidence; quite the contrary, he strives to improve upon those
weaknesses.
He has been such an asset to the group: both with his attitude that has
motivated those around him to improve; and with his personality that
has lifted the spirits of the group at times when they needed it the most.
People may have expected me to write about Ryan displaying a ‘natural flair’ for the subject. Ryan is
extremely talented but it’s his exceptional work ethic that has enabled him to succeed in biology.
Ryan shows a level of maturity beyond his years and has been an absolute pleasure to teach. We all
know that he will be successful wherever life takes him. His attitude to his studies and approach to
his life outside school should be an example to future pupils.
PRODUCT DESIGN – Mark Stephenson
Mark made a chair for his final piece in his coursework and used a range of
recycled items to help with the overall look of the product. He has been the
ambassador for Product Design for this academic year. He has shown
willingness to help younger students and support them in his GCSE's. He has
taken his studies very seriously and has been keen to do well. He did sometimes
spend the first part of the lesson staring at familiar pieces of equipment as if he
had never seen them before! We wish Mark every success in his future,
whatever path he may choose.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY – Abbie Ingham
Throughout the past two years Abbie has shown a great deal of effort
and commitment for a subject that she had not studied previously at
GCSE.
During the course she has gained in confidence demonstrating a wide
range of practical skills which she has used to develop a creative range
of prototypes for her AS and A2 coursework folders.
Abbie has also developed her knowledge for the theoretical aspect of
the course and has shown that she is able to apply this when preparing
for the written exam.
We wish Abbie every success for the future and hope that she fulfils her ambition to study in Paris
next year. Bon courage!
PRODUCT DESIGN – Jack Emsley
Jack (have you seen this on You Tube) Emsley has progressed with
his work this year. He has developed a good understanding of the
field of Product Design and has been a pleasure to teach. He has an
ability to take criticism well and act on advice given. We have seen
him develop as a person both in his maturity and definitely in
height! If only he had realised what time lessons actually started on
a Wednesday he would have completed much more work on time.
We wish him every success in his future with the Marines and hope he finds time to fit in some work
in between going on holiday! Keep in touch and buy an alarm clock!
ART TEXTILES - Annabel Collins
Annabel has produced outstanding textiles work throughout her time
at Driffield School. Annabel understands how to research, design,
develop and make original textile pieces and how to meet the top
assessment criteria to gain the highest marks. Her GCSE witch stage
costume is remarkable for its originality, decorative detail and
challenging construction techniques. Transition from DT Textiles
Technology to Art Textiles presented no problems for Annabel; she
worked with even more determination and was so successful that her
target was increased to a Grade A. Annabel has been an absolute
pleasure to teach because she has learnt new skills quickly and then independently developed
techniques much further, inspired by other artists, visits she has made and concepts she is
investigating. Each one of her four AS/A2 practical pieces is individual, imaginative and skilful; her
sketchbooks are fascinating and exploding with samples and investigations. Annabel thoroughly
deserves the award, not only for the progress she has made and the consistent hard work but also
for the innovative and skilful textile artwork she has created along with the written work that
supports her studies. We wish her every success on the Hull College Art Foundation course. Keep in
touch and let us know what follows on from the foundation course.
ART TEXTILES – Isobel Hill
From the very start of year 12 Isobel established a high standard of
sketchbook work which was independently researched, delicately drawn
and thoughtfully presented. Although new to many of the textile skills
required for the course, she learnt techniques quickly and was soon
exploiting them to make individually and carefully crafted samples of
textile art. Independent thinking and the ability to make inspirational
connections between her own work and that of other artists have enabled
Isobel to create unique AS/A2 final pieces with thought provoking
contexts. She has a fascination with clothing the body in statement pieces;
her sketchbook articulates her breath of imagination. Isobel is a very
modest student with huge talent. We wish her every success on her
foundation course and on her future degree course.
FINE ART – Isobel Hill
She arrived for sixth form, an unknown quantity. Feather in her black wide brimmed hat, which
across the months, grew into ivy… Isobel has developed her art student style to perfection and has
evolved to reflect the individual she is. She has impressed us from day one with her exquisite
observations, both visual and written. She has the tiniest writing in the world, but within those tiny
words lays the biggest ideas. She has grown as an artist over the last two years on a voyage of self-
discovery, producing work both personal but often with humour. Her technical skills have advanced
with each turn of the sketchbook page, in drawing, painting, printmaking and photography. Her final
show of work was beautifully presented, showing her breadth of skills and depth of ideas. We wish
Izzy every success in her very bright future.
FINE ART – Finn Hughes Smith
Finn’s love of art is tangible. He appears to live and breathe it. His
dogged determination to achieve highly in Fine Art could not go
unnoticed. He has all the great attributes of an artist; a sketchbook
which travels everywhere with him, a keenly observant eye, a natural
affinity with colour, and a knowledge of art history which would put
even Mr Hamilton to shame. Finn has impressed us without falter; his
art work within A2 has been thoughtful and well executed, with great
patience and resolve. Finn’s final show of his fine art work has gained a
fantastic response from all who have walked through the doors at Ace.
We wish you all the success you desire and which you deserve in the future, Finn.
GRAPHICS – Ryan Elliott & David Foster
David and Ryan stood out among their
peers in Year 12 as genuinely interested
and committed students with a passion for
good design. They have successfully
carried that passion through into their
work this year. They have functioned
brilliantly as a team, supporting one
another every step of the way with a
generosity and positivity that has allowed them both to thrive. It was
impossible to choose one or the other as the recipient of this year’s graphic design award as both
are so equally and fully deserving. As with all they’ve done, when asked to take turns in providing
one another with thought provoking lesson starters they embraced the challenge and took
responsibility, consistently providing interesting, enjoyable stimuli for one another and their
teachers. Both are proficient with our Adobe design software, and they have often taken time out
from their own work to show one another new techniques, or to help one another develop ideas
with a “have you thought about trying this?” It has been a pleasure to see them grow as designers,
sharing new discoveries with one another and helping each other solve creative problems with
greater and greater independence. Any rivalry has been good natured, and lessons often like design
team meetings with committed co-workers, such was the spirit of shared endeavour, good humour
and rapport. Both David and Ryan have worked extremely hard, come up with some really creative
and professional looking work, expanded one another’s knowledge, and proved themselves to be
utterly reliable, conscientious and enterprising young men. It has been a privilege to guide them
over the last two years and we wish them every success in their futures.
PHOTOGRAPHY – Caitlin Scott
There was tough competition for the Photography Award this year,
and strong arguments could be made for all our Y13 photographers to
claim the prize. Ultimately Caitlin was chosen for achieving a
consistently high standard in all the practical aspects of the course,
and combining her technical mastery with thorough and coherent
exploration of creative ideas, particularly in her final project. Whilst
Caitlin’s work for Unit 3 was often about responding to time and place
and making the most of the light and subject matter available, there
was still a strong sense of purpose running through her work on the
elements. Her work became more creative as the unit progressed,
with carefully planned experiments photographing fire, and roses frozen in ice. In Unit 4 her
knowledge of drama and strong understanding of negative led to some really exciting work building
on her surrealist work from Unit 1, with multiple-exposure sequences and motion blur creating
scenes of ghostly visitations. Caitlin’s camera work paid utmost attention to detail and gave
meticulous consideration to light, location, subject, and camera controls. She extended her ideas
further with carefully planned and lit studio work, and showed great skill and commitment in her
editing to achieve exactly what she wanted. Caitlin has set herself extremely high standards
throughout the course, and shown perseverance, determination, and put in a lot of time and effort
to reach the level she has. Well done!
Film Studies Emma Pinkney
We have nominated Emma for the A Level Film studies citation
because of her enthusiasm and love of the subject. Throughout
the course she has proved a perceptive and intelligent student
who has demonstrated real aptitude for Film Studies. She has
an excellent understanding of film theories and concepts and is
skilful at analysing film texts. Her wider film knowledge has
improved markedly in year 13 and is now a real strength. Emma
proved utterly reliable in meeting deadlines for coursework. Her
film investigation in particular was an outstanding piece of work
and demonstrated the kind of skills she will require at university
level. She proved an asset in lessons because of her understanding of film, contributing to
discussions with a real passion and a genuine enjoyment of and engagement with the
subject. She is an immensely likeable and talented young woman who has impressed
everyone with her commitment and skill. We fully support her intention to continue her
study of Film and Media at university and look forward to following her career in future.
English Language - Beth Stanhope
We have nominated Beth for the A2 English Language Award because
of her aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. Right from the very
beginning of this course Beth has shown a high level of understanding
of the way language functions in society and has endeavoured to
augment this by applying principles of language study and constantly
seeking ways to develop her knowledge. Beth has shown herself to be
a brilliant writer and produced an original media piece on ‘Black Friday’
which would not look out of place in any broadsheet newspaper. Her
narrative too was inventive, played with perspective and showed a
mastery of metaphor! I think what impressed us most of all about Beth
is her independent and enquiring mind. Her investigation was original and so ambitious even we had
misgivings whether to advise her to go ahead. However, Beth tackled it with her usual quiet
confidence and determination, and she was right. This resilience, commitment and the wealth of
other attributes Beth has makes her a worthy recipient of this award.
Media Studies - Spencer West
Spencer has always had a natural talent and flair in Media Studies – both in
the written aspect of the subject and the practical element too. Spencer
always proved himself to be a very accomplished and talented editor – he
got the grips with the industry standard software very quickly after going
through the basics and produced some superb work over his two years in
my Media class. His coursework has been very strong for both years – Y12
and 13 – but he has come into his own this year with his music video. I
cannot remember another group or individual spending so much time in the
editing suites – and not just before the deadline.
Spencer is a perfectionist and always sets unbelievably high standards for
both himself and others in the group. It is not just in his coursework
portfolio that Spencer has excelled this year. He took to the theory side of Online Media
exceptionally well and I have used his practice answers as model examples for the rest of the group
to analyse.
Spencer wishes to attend University next year in Northumbria. Hopefully this will be the first step in
achieving his goal – something he shared with me when he was in my Y10 English class – and that is,
to be an English teacher. I am positive that in a few years, ‘Mr West’ will be inspiring the younger
generation to find their love of Literature and even share some wisdom along the way – maybe we
will even teach together if fate determines it.
Well done, Spencer – and good luck.
Business & Economics - Joe Gosling
Joe has proven himself to be an academically outstanding student
within the subject areas of Business and Economics. Both his quest
for knowledge and enthusiasm towards the subject have been
evident and ever present throughout his time in Sixth Form. Joe’s
own inquisitive nature has led him to independently keep abreast of
not only what is happening in the UK Economy but also the World
Economy beyond, and this has undoubtedly helped him to excel in
the subject. He has been able to successfully gather, understand,
digest and interpret the masses of information and opinion that exist
around the subject and successfully arrive at his own well-formed
and rounded conclusions. This stands Joe in very good stead for the
additional demands of his chosen University undergraduate course.
Joe has been a pleasure to get to know, to teach, and has proven to be a real asset to my class and
his classmates. I have no doubt that Joe will be very successful in his A level results, beyond that in
his Further Studies and most likely in whatever he turns his mind to thereafter. I would like to thank
Joe for enhancing my teaching as well as his peers learning and sincerely wish him the very best for
the future.
Sociology - Katie Berriman
Katie has always taken a keen interest in sociology in
particular feminism and the impact of the feminist movement
on society. She has shown a real talent in sociology and
excelled in her AS exam. She has a natural flair for applying
sociological theory and concepts and has been a role model
for the group. Katie mets all deadline’s and has a calm and
quiet ‘get on with it approach’. Katie has a real skill for
understanding what the question is asking and being able to
apply her knowledge to achieve the highest marks. She
contributed in all lessons and helped support other students. I
wish her every success at university and she has been a true pleasure to teach.
History - Alisha Bingham.
Since joining our school at the end of Year 12, Alisha has impressed
with her determined manner to do well. She made the transition
smoothly, seamlessly joining the group and establishing herself as a
thoughtful and industrious student, always checking her own
performance and seeking extra support if she felt uncertain about
an issue. Alisha writes with an analytical articulation that always
makes her work lively, interesting and challenging to read. This
bodes well for her university future and the whole History Team
wishes her well for the future.
Thank you, Alisha.
History - Sophie Walker.
The History Team wishes to praise Sophie for the past two years spent
studying History.
Sophie is a talented historian who has approached her topics in an
interesting and thoughtful manner. An increasing self-confidence has
resulted in the commensurate improvement in her work but is all the
more creditable, set against Sophie's extra-historical studies. Her
musical talent and participation in orchestras and ensembles are legion
and given the enormous commitment that this takes to prepare her for
a career in music, her achievement is History is all the more
commendable. The History Team wishes her well and expects a
generous discount when listening to her playing bass at the Proms!
Thank you, Sophie.
ICT – Charlotte Ellis
Charlotte has proven herself to be an academically outstanding
student within the subject area of ICT. Charlotte’s ICT skills have
developed considerably over the year. So much so that she is a
support to other students in the class, giving generously of her time to
explain difficult concepts to her peers.
Charlotte has worked extremely hard this year and is committed to
doing well. Her positive attitude to studies has helped her better
understand what is needed to achieve and I have every confidence
that she will.
Charlotte has been a pleasure to teach. I hope that she will continue her ICT studies into
Year 13. I am confident that she will get the results she deserves.
English Literature - Lydia Waites
Lydia’s hard work and determination within English Literature has to be
thoroughly recognised, as she is an individual who is extremely
committed to succeed and has a clear love of Literature. Lydia has been
a conscientious student, always willing to debate and discuss different
interpretations of texts; read academic criticism to further her
arguments. Lydia is a sensitive and humorous student who is always
willing to assist her peers in times of need. Lydia has a unique
interpretation of texts and is able to apply her original insight to
poems, novels and plays. I hope Lydia’s passion for Literature continues
on her journey into higher education.
Philosophy and Ethics – Sade Carter Taylor
Sade thoroughly deserves this award for her enthusiasm and dedication to
the subject. Throughout the A level course she always gave 100%
commitment to the work, and would often do far more than was expected
of her. Her attendance was first rate and she set a clear example to the rest
of the group. In particular Sade was always ready to help others in the
group. She was often a quiet class member who was approachable and
friendly to all. We all feel she is thoroughly deserving of this award.
Psychology - Alishia Bingham
I don’t think I have every come across a student so driven, focused and
determined to do well her A Levels as Alishia. Alisha thoroughly deserves
this aware as she is a model student who is not happy to settle for second
best she was striving to be the best she can be and push herself. Alishia is
always smiling and has a positive impact on the group as she is not afraid
to question something she does not fully understand and is great at
getting other student’s to see Psychology through her eyes. Her written
work is always top quality and her ability to integrate research methods
into her answer is brilliant. I wish her all the luck in her exams and she is
going to be successful in anything she puts her mind to.
Psychology - Emily Anderson
I have had the great pleasure of being Emily’s form tutor for 5 Years and
teaching Emily for GCSE and A Level. Emily is an outstanding student who has
a ‘can do’ attitude and has demonstrated a very strong work ethic. She has a
personality which is tailor made for both the social elements of life and her
academia. In Emily’s desire to succeed she has put in huge amount of extra
work outside of the classroom and is highly driven to be the best that she can
be. She demonstrates these traits by being determined, focused and
charismatic. Emily is highly skilled at evaluating Psychological research and
integrating Issues, approaches and debates into her answers. Emily has
exceptional oral and written communication skills; these are demonstrated regularly in the
classroom and with her work from home. Emily is so driven and just gets on with what she needs to
do in order to achieve her potential. Assignments are regularly presented at a very high standard
and always on time. Emily is an outstanding student who has all the qualities a university would
desire and is well respected by her peers. I wish Emily every success in the future and on a personal
note will miss her dearly. Good luck and keep in touch.
Spanish – Kathryn Wardle
Over the past seven years in Spanish, Kathryn has been a delight to
teach, always achieving outstanding results and showing a true
dedication to her studies. We wish Kathryn every success in her
future and we are sure that such an intelligent and ambitious
student will achieve great things. ¡Qué tengas mucha suerte en to
do! Miss Sharpe and Mrs Zahraoui
French- Sarah Theakston
Sarah is an extremely well-organised, intelligent and hard-working
student. It has been a pleasure to see her grow in confidence over
the years and fulfil her potential in French. She never settles for
second best and is always eager to improve her work and act upon
advice offered. Her dedicated and mature approach to her work will
stand her in good stead for the future. It has been a real pleasure to
teach Sarah and to see how much she has progressed during the
course. Even when placed in stressful situations, like the French
Speaking exam, Sarah has always remained composed and ready for
the challenge (although she was very glad when it was over!). She will be going to Sheffield
to study physics, which will be an amazing experience for her as she is always open-minded
and willing to make the most of every opportunity. We wish her well for the future. Bonne
chance Sarah!
PE – Ryan Bush
Ryan has proved to be a fantastic student throughout his physical
education at Driffield School. From year seven he has taken a full role
in everything from core lessons to extra-curricular and into his
examination studies in KS4 and KS5. He has reached the highest
levels in attainment with a commitment to personal excellence and
this proved to be vital with A grade in PE GCSE, B in AS PE and
hopefully the grade he needs from A2 to start his physiotherapy
course in September. He has demonstrated an excellent, committed
approach to his studies with evidence of wider reading, personal study and exam practice
whilst maintaining his enjoyment of the sixth form at Driffield School. He has represented
the school at football, rugby and athletics and maintained a first class attitude to training
and improving his level of performance. A fine ambassador when representing the school
both locally and county wide. It is with great pleasure that we present this to Ryan and as a
department we know the he will take this mature and determined approach into his future
career.
PE – Emma Palmer
Emma is a first class student exam student who has taken the term
‘independent study’ to another level. She is the most meticulous and
dedicated student we have had the pleasure to teach and this
commitment has paid dividends with a fantastic level of attainment
throughout each key stage. Through her early years we saw the
potential of Emma as a sporting all-rounder especially in swimming
where she focused on achieving personal bests and perfecting an
already fantastic technique. Into key stage four she took to the GCSE
studies in a mature and focused manner. As she grew into the course
she learnt to ask leading questions and extended her own knowledge
in the process. After choosing AS Physical Education, although Emma already had the tools
to tackle the higher level studies, she made a concerted effort to become the best AS
student she could be. Personal notes, extended wider reading and a thorough commitment
to exam practice has enabled her to shine within the group and hopefully this summer she
will gain the results she deserves. Well done Emma and we wish her all the best for the
future.
Chemistry - Cameron Kay There can be no doubt that Chemistry has found a true ambassador in
Cameron. The enthusiasm, effort and skills demonstrated, in his studies,
have been exceptional. The articulate way in which he communicates
complex scientific knowledge to his peers underpins why he will have a
successful future in the scientific community. Cameron has worked
extremely hard and is highly valued by both his peers and the staff of the
Chemistry department. He always strives for excellence and this attitude is
very admirable. The department wishes him all the best as he continues his
Chemistry studies at University.
Chemistry - Ellie Williams
Ellie has shown sheer determination and resilience in her Chemistry studies.
Throughout the year she has inspired others, by being a role model, through
the diligent way she completed work to the highest standards. Her careful,
methodical way in which she carries out experimental work paves the way for
her to become a successful scientist. Ellie epitomises the growth mind-set that
we hope to see in our students. She is always attentive and ready to learn and
seeks to turn every challenge into an opportunity to develop and grow. We
wish her all the best for the future.
Physics – Joe Gosling
Joe has grown over the past five years into a focussed and dedicated student
who has shown both perseverance and enthusiasm to succeed at A level
physics. He has been a pleasure to have in the class, bringing with him
positivity and humour to each lesson, contributing to every aspect and
continually supporting others with their learning.
We hope that whatever you do in the future, your time studying physics will
continue to provide interest, inspiration and an ability to look beyond the
obvious.
Travel and Tourism - Abbie Ingham
Abbie has shown a very keen interest in Travel and Tourism from the start of Year 12 and consequently had a very successful first year in which she worked extremely hard, even though the course is less practical, she still persisted without any complaints. In Year 13 Abbie flourished during both the event management and guided tour aspects of the course. She was very organised throughout and naturally balanced being proactive while not dominating. When on the trip in London, Abbie remained very reliable, responsible and trustworthy as well as always retaining a very calm head when difficult decisions had to be made. During
the entire course, Abbie has been a very well respected member of the Travel and Tourism team by both her peers and her staff. Overall Abbie is an extremely hard working individual who deserves to succeed in everything she does. Well done Abbie!
Mathematics – Aaron Padam
Aaron has been a delight to have in Maths throughout his time at
Driffield School & Sixth Form. He approaches work with a real
enthusiasm for not only finding the correct solution but also thinking
of multiple ways to approach it. Aaron enjoys finding short cuts
through thinking laterally about the problem he is presented with. He
was particularly taken with the Ruffini method for division of
polynomials which intrigued him to investigate it further and ensured
he would never get tangled in long division again - In fact I’m pretty
sure he has on occasion used it to divide polynomials just for fun!
Aaron’s dedication to his studies is admirable and he has been an
inspiration to others by raising his own target grade over the course of his Maths A’ level. He is a
super mathematician and has enjoyed the various games and challenges that we have done
harbouring a competitive yet fun nature. We wish him every success and are confident that he will
continue to enjoy his academic journey whilst inspiring and impressing others along the way.
Further Maths - Andy Rodgers.
Andy has consistently been an outstanding Further
Mathematician. Despite having to miss a number of lessons he
worked in advance of his absence to get ahead in his
mathematical studies He taught himself a number of the further
maths topics which is not easy as there are sometimes very few
worked examples in the textbooks and also at times very irritating
errors and omissions that make teaching it to yourself a real
challenge. When he returned to school he focussed extremely
hard to ensure he was back up to speed in all the areas as quickly
as possible.
Considering the time he missed it was still noticeable that students would turn to him to
check methods and answers, showing how highly he was thought of by his peers for his
mathematical aptitude.
He has an amazing ability to recognise the direction a question was taking in order to plan
his strategy effectively and never shied away from even the hardest further maths tasks. He
could pull together areas from core maths as well as further maths and see how they
strategies could support and extend the work in both areas.
It has been a pleasure to see how he has developed as a mathematician over his time at
Driffield School and Sixth Form and he certainly deserves the highest grades in the summer.
