SPIRITULIZED YOUTH FOR CHRIST TAKING GOOD NEWS RELEVANTLY TO EVERY YOUNG PERSON IN THE SOUTH HAMS
WHO WE ARE SPIRITULIZED Youth for Christ is well established and innovative youth work charity that exists in covenanted relationship with British Youth for Christ and works alongside and on behalf of the Churches of the South Hams, South Devon. We were established in 1997 and are a well-respected provider of youth work within our town with strong working relationships with the local Churches, Town and District Councils, Police and Community College. Our work is wide ranging but focussed on sharing Good News relevantly with every young person in the South Hams. We are blessed by extremely positive relationships with the churches of our area that are keen to work with us to reach young people. At a time where less and less children and young people are attending churches, and as services and opportunities for young people continue to be cut we stand firm in our commitment to supporting, caring for, loving and bringing hope to young people in the South Hams. As we look to the future we know that we have a key role to play in seeing God’s Kingdom grow in our community.
KINGSBRIDGE & DISTRICT Kingsbridge is a market town and tourist hub in the South Hams district of Devon, England, with a population of 6,116 at the 2011 census. Two electoral wards bear the name of Kingsbridge (East & North). Their combined population at the above census was 4,381. It is situated at the northern end of the Kingsbridge Estuary a ria that extends to the sea six miles south of the town. It is the third largest settlement in the South Hams, following Ivybridge the largest being Totnes. The Kingsbridge market town area defined by Devon CC consists of the following 19 parishes: Buckland-tout-Saints East Portlemouth Salcombe Stokenham Charleton Frogmore & Sherford Slapton Thurlestone Chivelstone Kingsbridge South Huish West Alvington Churchstow Loddiswell South Milton Woodleigh East Allington Malborough South Pool
Aveton Gifford also likes to consider Kingsbridge as its local market town. In addition to these parishes our work currently extends to Strete in the East, and Modbury to the West giving a ‘working area’ of around 100sq/miles of rural Devon and the population of this area is approximately 18,750

In 2010 Devon County Council recorded that 18% of children living in the Town area of Kingsbridge live in poverty which is higher than both the Devon county and national average (http://www.devon.gov.uk/kingsbridgeupdate.pdf) The area whilst comparatively small has a scattered population over 25% living in rural isolated communities making our work particularly challenging. Calculations from the previous census indicate that there are approximately 2,800 11-24 year olds living within this area yet a survey of the 34 churches within the same parishes revealed that less than 1% of these young people have any contact on a regular basis with the local church, and many of these churches have no youth activities. There are no full time youth workers within this area. We are committed to supporting the church to address this decline recognising the importance of reaching and discipling young people.
WHAT WE DO
THE FRIDAY NGHT PROJECT providing a safe, warm place for young people to meet every Friday night this weekly drop-in
attract has seen a footfall of 1,096 young people and has made a significant impact tackling
anti-social behaviour and low level crime.
STREET TEAM
detached, street based work – providing free bottled water, a listening ear and help in
getting home safely the team are a familiar part of community events and work from our
mobile project giving a highly visible presence.
BUS PROJECT Mobile youth facility – with its immediate kerbside appeal the multi-media technology and
comfortable seating creates an ideal environment for educational purposes and as a safe
place to gather. The annual footfall exceeds 1,000 visits and the project has also been used
to help start youth clubs in nearby villages and for partnership work with the Police
educating primary school children in internet safety
16-24 WORK CLUB Providing ‘person centred’ information, advice, training and guidance for young people.
Over 65% of young people attending the work club overcome the barriers that prevent them
moving forward with their lives. www.kingsbridgeworkclub.com
SCHOOLS WORK
BLAZE is a school lunchtime club, to explore, encourage and grow faith. We also work with
the college to help protect and mentor vulnerable young people.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
THE STAFF TEAM We currently have one paid part time co-ordinator of the 16-24 Work Club, Sha Hard and a volunteer Project Leader, Anji Chant who was one of the founders of SPIRITULIZED. We also have a volunteer team of 27 many of whom have served SPIRITULIZED long term.
THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES There are currently 6 serving trustees. 5 have served over a long time. The board normally meets monthly to support the current project leader and the operation of the organisation. All the trustees also support in other ways such as volunteering at sessions or providing practical assistance where possible. .
THE FINANCES We are currently in a stable financial position having worked hard in recent years to raise the profile and support level for the organisation. We recognise that fund raising for the ministry will always be a challenge and something that we must continue to work hard at and have an income generation and communications strategy in place to help us focus on this. Funding for this post has been granted for a 3 year period, subject to an annual review by the funder, Joseph Rank Trust. It is hoped that during this 3 year period the future financial sustainability of the post will have been achieved.
THE OFFICE AND OPERATIONS Having worked from spare bedrooms since its start in 1997, in November 2015 we moved into an office in the centre of Kingsbridge which is attached to a small community Centre. The office has desks for 3 team members and storage space. We have additional storage space for larger items at Old Station Yard industrial estate where the bus is parked. We have worked hard in recent years to ensure the smooth operation of the Centre and strive to be a Centre of best practice. Policies and procedures are all in place and worked to and we always endeavour to have a high level of competence in the way we operate.

ETHOS STATEMENT
The ethos of SPIRITULIZED Youth for Christ emerges from the SPIRITULIZED YFC Statement
of Faith and from a desire and motivation to express God’s love to those outside the
organisation and to reflect this love internally in our relationships with one another. We
express God’s love to those outside SPIRITULIZED YFC by obeying Christ’s mandate in
Mathew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8. These mandates were given by Jesus to his disciples and
from these we take our mission.
And Jesus came and said to them “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be
my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”
Acts 1:8
The motivation of most of those who work in SPIRITULIZED YFC comes from and flows out of
the context of Christian faith and is seen as an expression of that faith. (See also the
SPIRITULIZED YFC Statement of Faith.)
The Christian Faith
States that God is the sole creator
Determines that each individual is uniquely made in the image of God although is also fallen.
Declares that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to save humankind from sin
Provides for a relationship with the living God in the person of Jesus Christ that defines what being a Christian means
Equips the Christian to live life through the power of the Holy Spirit and grow in holiness.

The Christian Expression of Faith
Honours, obeys and glorifies God, acknowledging God’s sovereignty
Nourishes the spiritual life and is fully committed to developing it
Believes that no one is beyond the redeeming love of the Saviour, Jesus Christ and this love reaches out to people of all nations, cultures and ethnicities.
Knows God through the person of Jesus and seeks to follow his way of life, modelling love, justice, peace and forgiveness in attitudes and behaviours
Embraces the power of the Holy Spirit as the source of strength for living
As we see in Colossians chapter 3 the Christians’ motivation to express the love of Christ in
his/her life affects not just the nature of the work he/she is involved in but in the way
he/she behaves and relates to others. This should lead to a vocational and relational
lifestyle characterised and driven by faith in God, touching the lives of others through the
work of the Holy Spirit.
The motivation for our mission comes from Christ’s love compelling believers (2 Cor.5:14)
and is therefore rooted in our faith in Christ. This faith produces a distinctive heart attitude
of love, which expresses and is characterised by the following values and behaviour.
Core Values
Dignity Every individual, group or community is created unique and bears
the imprint of God. Therefore all relationships within and outside
SPIRITULIZED YFC should be characterised by love, compassion and
wholehearted respect for the individual, group or community.
Empowerment Increasing the capacity of individuals and groups to make choices
and to transform those choices into positive actions and outcomes.
Increasing the spiritual, political, social or economic growth of
individuals and communities. Offering opportunities for experience
and participation which leads to learning and growth for young
people, volunteers, trustees, staff members and linked partners.
Partnership Actively seeking positive opportunity for partnership with other
bodies, forming trusting relationships that fulfil agreed upon
expectations by sharing complementary strengths and resources to
reach our mutual goals.
Innovation Continually pioneering new ways of fulfilling our mission, being
prepared to experiment with the new and different as we operate
and minister, ensuring a fresh and creative approach to reaching
young people relevantly. Meeting the needs of young people and
presenting opportunities for exploration of the gospel message.

Core Behaviours
Inclusivity Facilitating a sense of belonging to the corporate whole.
Integrity SPIRITULIZED YFC and individual staff would be true to our values in
how we operate internally as well as externally. The values which we
promote for ourselves as SPIRITULIZED YFC should be matched by
those which we practice when relating to others.
These values and behaviours are intrinsically linked to the success and fulfilment of our
mission. Therefore, the attitude and motivation of our staff and the way our mission is
achieved are as important as the mission itself. (John13:34, Matthew 22:36, 1Corinthians
13:1&2)
As this attitude and motivation come only from a relationship with Christ, it becomes a
genuine occupational requirement that many of our staff are committed Christians. Roles
that have significant leadership or representational responsibilities, or that are central to
fulfilling our aims and purposes or developing and maintaining our Christian ethos, will
always be held by committed evangelical Christians. SPIRITULIZED YFC will work at its best
when its staff and volunteers work to a common purpose.
There are other roles that have key spiritual elements to them which can only be carried out
by those who are committed to a living faith in God.
There are some posts which do not require someone to have an expressed Christian
commitment, but it is expected that every member of staff will respect and uphold all areas
expressed in this policy.
SPIRITULIZED YFC recognise that it is essential that these attitudes and behaviours continue
in SPIRITULIZED YFC and mark our work. We expect our staff to act in good faith and with
loyalty to that relational ethos and to evangelical Christian standards of behaviour.
Notwithstanding this, SPIRITULIZED YFC is committed to diversity amongst its staff and
volunteers and will not discriminate of grounds that are unrelated to our ethos.

The mission statement of SPIRITULIZED YFC is:
‘TAKING THE GOOD NEWS RELEVANTLY TO EVERY YOUNG PERSON IN THE SOUTH HAMS’.
All SPIRITULIZED YFC’s activities must be rooted in the Mission Statement and nothing
should be undertaken which does not serve the goal of fulfilling the Mission Statement.
This means:
Taking Carrying what has been personally and corporately grasped to present to young people. Carry this as gift that is beneficial to others.
Good News Firstly and in the main, the gospel as expressed in the Bible and
systematised in the historic Christian creeds, but recognising also that
good news can also be an outworking of this gospel in many and
varied practical ways.
Relevantly In a style and form that communicated effectively with the given
audience. This demands flexibility in approach.
Every young person Not limited by national geography, economics, status, culture, ethnicity, religion, disability etc.

Context The Centre is committed to its staff, to their development and has a ‘duty of care’ towards each member of the staff team. The Centre is committed to act with compassion, grace and pastoral concern. Members of staff are encouraged to make every reasonable effort and intention to meet the standards of personal conduct within a work and social context as set out in this code of conduct. Scope This document is used at the recruitment and selection stage for new staff and applicants will be asked to confirm that they are happy to abide by the code of conduct. It also forms the basis of an understanding of behaviour and expectation of one another for all those existing staff working in the Centre. Roles which have significant leadership or representative responsibilities, or that are central to fulfilling the aims and purposes or developing and maintaining our Christian ethos, will always be held by committed Christians who assent to our statement of faith. Policy As a result of our shared beliefs and values the following are examples of behaviours we would expect to find in staff in the Centre.
Willingness to give account of a living faith in Jesus Christ within settings and context appropriate to day to day responsibilities.
Regular commitment and participation in the life of a local church.
The treatment of one another with grace, respect, courtesy, politeness, forgiveness and Christian love.
Honesty and co-operation in our interactions, timekeeping and work practice.
Respect for authority and for individual conscience and diversity as people working together.
Commitment to good stewardship of the Centre’s finances and resources. Where posts have been identified as not requiring someone to have an expressed Christian commitment it is recognised that the first two bullet points above will not apply. The Centre’s staff will be expected to comply with the Centre’s policies and procedures and have a responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people with whom they work. Workers will be expected to abide by the Centres Safeguarding policy and guidelines. Should a difficult situation develop the Centre will act with compassion, grace and pastoral concern. Such issues may be as the result of incapacity or an error of judgement rather than lifestyle choices or pre-determined behavioural choice and the Centre will respond encouraging restoration.

It is recognised that the Bible outlines specific behaviours as fundamental and in situations where these may have been contravened the Centre would act in accordance with its disciplinary procedure within a context of grace and compassion as time is taken to investigate and consider the circumstance of the situation. This will mean the following should be factors that will be considered
The severity of the perceived misconduct
Whether the incident is ‘one off’ or part of repeated behaviour or life style
Any mitigating circumstances
The position of trust of the employee within the Centre
Christian maturity and understanding
The treatment of similar instances of misconduct by other employees
The employees length of service
The extent of any ‘live’ disciplinary warnings
Evidence of regret The following is a non-exhaustive list of matters which are considered to be gross misconduct and which would normally result in dismissal.
Any action constituting a serious criminal offence.
Actions which contravenes the YFC statement of faith or contrary to the standards and beliefs held by YFC.
Unauthorised removal or use of the employer’s property.
Theft from the employer, its employees, volunteers or the public.
Committing acts of forgery, deliberate falsification of, or failure to complete records, or misrepresentation to the advantage of themselves or others.

between employer and employee or where the employee damages the reputation of YFC or where it affects the performance of an employee in their particular role.
It is understood that while every member of staff is vulnerable to behaviour which contravenes that laid out in Scripture, our desire as an organisation is to inspire, encourage and build one another up in the faith in order to honour, obey and glorify God in our work. This code of conduct seeks to facilitate this aim in compliance with biblical precepts as agreed by the trustees of the Centre in the statement of faith and by expressing Christian behaviours in the context primarily of employment. STATEMENT OF FAITH
We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible authoritative Word of God. We believe in the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, and in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. We believe that the salvation of lost and sinful people is by the grace of God through faith and the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ. MISSION STATEMENT OF YOUTH FOR CHRIST INTERNATIONAL To participate in the body of Christ in responsible evangelism of youth, presenting them with the person, work and teachings of Christ and discipling them into the Church. VISION STATEMENT OF SPIRITULIZED YOUTH FOR CHRIST TO TAKE GOOD NEWS RELEVANTLY TO EVERY YOUNG PERSON IN THE SOUTH HAMS.
I confirm that I accept the above statement of faith without reservation. Name __________________________ Signed: __________________________ Date: _______________
