WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITIES OF
Deacon Steve Tabor Phone: 503.769.8089
“God’s plans and purposes are for our well-being.” At the Collect (Opening Prayer) at the masses during this week, this is what we ask the Lord, that is, “to desire what you (God) promise.” God’s plans and purposes are for our well-being and they are “plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11). Sin however makes us think and feel otherwise and so we fail to trust in His loving care for us. It does imply then a desire in seeking out the path of discipleship through the “narrow gate” that Jesus asks of us in today’s Gospel. This would require a disposition of humility, self-denial, detachment, generosity, forgiveness; in a nutshell, loving obedience to God’s commandments, no matter what the cost. In undertaking this challenging path, the second reading from the letter to the Hebrews highlights the fact that God will dis-cipline us. We would be better from it if we are open to the correction our Father offers us and worse off should we fail to heed his voice. If one goes about in a disciplined manner with the various interests one has, be it from practice at sports or the arts or even one’s diet, must one then not have a disci-plined approach also towards one’s spiritual life? Let us be wise in also investing in what matters ultimately. Eternal life beckons us and hence no effort should be spared to “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Phil 3:14). The knowledge of Himself, God de-sires of all nations and Israel was to be an instrument to all surrounding nations for this as the first reading reminds us. The entire life of a Christian is an exercise in holy desire, wrote St. Augustine. May that desire for God and His ways encourage many others too on that path. Fr. Alliston

Pope Francis Teaches Us Join us for an opportunity to hear directly what our pope is saying in the Gaudete et Exsultate ( Rejoice and be Glad) is the third apostolic exhor-tation of Pope Francis, published on 9 April 2018, subtitled "On the call to holiness in today's world". The Pope challenges us on the path to ho-liness as a necessary step towards happiness. Is this only for a chosen few? Holiness stems from our dignity as human persons created by God and so embark on this path by living out the beatitudes. The Pope men-tions signs of what genuine holiness entails.
