Summary of research into similar

Conventions

Here is a list of the shots that I found appeared most in the 3 music videos I’ve analysed:

• Bands performing in the music videos • A relationship between the lyrics of the

song and the content of the video• More close ups on the main singer than

any other band member• There’s a relationship between the lyrics

and the 4 technical areas• There’s a relationship between the

genre of the music and the events in the music video

Appearance of bands in their music videos

In 2 of the 3 music videos that I’ve analysed, the bands appeared in the videos performing.

In both of these music videos, close ups were a popular choice of camerawork to show the lead singers singing, showing their emotions.

The settings where the bands appear are relevant to the lyrics of the song. (e.g. forgiveness/hope = church)

Relationships between the four technical areas and the lyrics

Fade in/out

“I’m breaking out”

“I can’t feel you there”

In all of the videos I analysed, the lyrics were linked directly to at least one of the four technical areas.

In the Muse song Hysteria depicts a man screaming in anger as the lyrics announce “I’m breaking out”.

In the Foo Fighters song Wheels, the lyrics state “I can feel the sinking, but then I came around”, showing a dark and blurry room and then the lead singer appearing in a clearer shot in the same room.

In the music video Numb by Linkin Park, the singer says “I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there” as a 2 shot of a girl and her mother having a fall out.

Relationship between the settings/location

and genre of the music

Hysteria

Numb

Wheels

Each of the three music videos I researched were different types of alternative rock music.

Wheels had more of a rock feeling to it, with a setting of a room lit only by the lamps and lights within the room. This made sure the room didn’t have too much low key lighting as the song had a “happier” meaning to it.

Hysteria was a considerably darker song with darker meanings. The settings represented this in one single room with low key lighting and broken props all over the room.

Numb also had a darker meaning to it, but with a hopeful message. This was portrayed using a church as a location, a place for forgiveness and faith. This was also represented with the beam of light that came through the church window.
