Vacation Bible School just the mere mention of it arouses memories of crafts still sitting inboxes after 20 or even 30 years, Bible stories that we just cannot forget, and, of course, open-ing and closing songs with tunes that none of us can stop humming! I still remember some VBStunes from my youth I even sing them sometimes when I feel afraid or when I struggle withsomething that seems bigger than me. We cherish the days of VBS, but how often do we takethe time to ask the youth who participate, What really excited you at VBS?or, Whatdid you learn?
This year, I had the opportunity to ask those kinds of questions to the youth from our commu-nity. The answers amazed and amused me. Lest we laugh too loudly, however, let us remem-ber that all of the answers came from sincere minds! Thats why I often say that youth are not the Churchtomorrow; they are the Church today.
In the What excited you?category:
I like dancing and singing the songs! We really get to make some fun things like jewelry, musical instruments and bowls.Atlas and Hercules were funny. I want Hercules to win. (the opening skit)I met Paul. He told us about being put in prison and an earthquake came and none of them left
and the guard almost killed himself with a sword but Paul said, Stop we are all here!I like writing with ink and feathers and making jewelryand we even made a Trojan horse that
opens up and we can put stuff inWe played zombie tag in the olympic gamesthat was fun! (How many athletes can say that?)
In the What did you learn?category:
The work was hard but we learned the importance of working together and working for others inour community.
Pastor Mike was great. He led us in Bible study and then took us out to work in the community.I learned the Greek alphabet.I learned how to make a really pretty necklaceand then I made some music instrumentsI wanted
to use them when we sang the songs, but I cant get them yet, theyre still dryingGod loves everyone! We can give all of our worries and cares to God because God cares for us (one of the memory vers-
es from 1 Peter; its on the back of the VBS t-shirts)I learned how to make a cup and I put jewels all over itWell, we have to pay the people (shopkeepers) before we make our stuff. (Each youth was given
three coins each night to spend in the market place where they made crafts.)
Do you see why its important for us to listen to the youth? Their answers may seem simple and many ofthem are but the faith behind them goes so deep. Their willingness and openness to share shows you andme how we all can be when we are excited about God in our lives.
If you want to learn about yourself and have some fun teaching youth the faith that has helped youthroughout your life, volunteer next year for VBS! Christian Ed is always looking for volunteers. If you cantwait until then, our youth also need teachers for Sunday

Zions LibraryHave you been in the library lately? The
materials, books, and videos are pretty
outdated. Would you like to see more re-cently written books from Christian authors
both fiction and non-fiction, spiritual
growth, and self-help as well as items for
teens and younger? Would you use the
library if it contained more current litera-
ture? I would be interested in your
thoughts about the use of our library.

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM
Included in the last few months Trumpets were articles about your deacons. If you were notaware of your deacon, do you now know her or him? We hope you have a sincere interest ingetting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. Our Pastor is thebest resource with whom to discuss questions and concerns, but your deacon can also serveyou in a similar way.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-ten and we turn to our deacon.
As mentioned the last several months, deacons meet bi-monthly to discuss a variety of topics, but
more importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other thanPastor Tim occasionally.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourageyou to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises.
If you are unsure about your deacon, please call the church office for assistance.Dick Anderson
