Student Instructions – National Geographic Photo Journalists Project: Evaluating photography through the eyes of a National Geographic photojournalist.
Activity: Check out the following website. http://www.nationalgeographic.com/photography/
How can you become a National Geographic photographer? What are five tips for adventure photography?
Pick a Photographer from this link: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/photography/biographies/index.html
Look at the photographer’s work. Does this work have common elements or, in other words, does this photographer have a signature style?
Read the biography. How did this person get started and what advice does he or she have for aspiring photographers?
Create a presentation from your research. Be sure to include photographs of the photographer that you choose.
Your presentation should have at least seven slides that include at least three photographs or graphics.
Supplies: Internet access, presentation software Deliverables: Your presentation and reflection
Reflection: If you could be a professional photographer what would be your specialty?
Wildlife, people, plants, etc.? Give reasons for your selection.
How your grade will be calculated:
Graded Elements Total Points Presentation with all required elements 50 Photos 10 Quality of research 10 Five tips for adventure photography 15 Identified photographer’s style 10 Reflection 5

Student Instructions – Create a New Breakfast Cereal
Project: Create a new breakfast cereal.
Note: Be sure to read all of the instructions before you start this project.
Activity: You will create a new breakfast cereal, develop sales projections, design the front of the cereal box, determine the target market for this product, and write a marketing slogan. Finally, you will create a presentation incorporating all of this information to present to the class.
1. Create your breakfast cereal. The sky is the limit. What kind of cereal would you like to have that is not being produced at this time?
2. Who is your target market for this product? Is it small children, older people, health food enthusiasts, fast food enthusiasts? You can decide this based on whom your product will appeal to the most.
3. Write a marketing slogan. This will be based on what is special about your cereal. Is it a healthy cereal that appeals to the health food crowd? Then you would write a short, catchy slogan that immediately tells people looking for health food that your cereal is for them.
4. Design the front of the box. You will want to include the name of your cereal and some of its special qualities. You would probably want your marketing slogan on the front of the box.
5. You will project sales over five years for this product and create a chart in your presentation illustrating those sales. Develop a price for your product, and then multiply it times the number of boxes that you expect to sell in the first year. To make it easier, just project a 20% increase for each year over the 5-year period.
a. Example: i. Year 1 = 50,000 boxes x $3.89 = $194,500.00
ii. Year 2 = 60,000 boxes x $3.89 = $233,400.00 iii. Year 3 = 72,000 boxes x $3.99 = $287,280.00 iv. Year 4 = 86,400 boxes x $ 4.20 = $362,880.00 v. Year 5 = 103,680 boxes x $4.29 = $444,787.20
6. Prepare a presentation that includes all of the above information. Be sure to add a title slide plus a conclusion slide. Be sure to talk about each slide. DO NOT READ each slide to the class. The slide is merely a summary. Remember you are selling this idea to your classmates and to the teacher just as you would “sell” a proposal of this nature in a business meeting.
Supplies: Word processing, graphic/drawing, presentation, and spreadsheet software
Deliverables: Box with your design on the front, document with your target market identified, marketing slogan, and sales projections. Also present your presentation with all required elements and complete the reflection.
Reflection: What was the hardest part of this project for you and why? Answer this question at the end of your presentation.
How your grade will be calculated:
Graded Elements Points Target market identified 10 Marketing slogan appropriate 20 Box design 30 Sales projections 10 Presentation 20 Reflection 10
Total 100
Advanced Level – Page 192 Digital Graphics and Multimedia – Volume 1
Teacher Instructions – Create a New Breakfast Cereal
Lesson: Project to reinforce word processing, desktop publishing, presentation, and spreadsheet skills.
Activity: See student instructions for details. Note: This project can be changed to create any product such as candy, soft drinks, school supplies, fitness products, etc. I like to do this project more than once with different products because they are more creative with the project on the second go-round. We find that giving targeted activities each day moves this project along faster. Students don’t feel as overwhelmed with the project.
Daily Targeted Activities: Day 1 – Discuss the project – students decide on a name and the characteristics of their product.
Day 2 – Students develop a marketing slogan and begin designing the box. Day 3 – Students finish the packaging and develop sales projections. Day 4 – Students create a presentation to sell the product.
Bloom’s: Knowledge, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation
TEKS: §130.278.C.7.D
TAKS: Math 11M10 8.14A. The student will identify and apply mathematics to everyday experiences, to activities in and outside of school, with other disciplines, and with other mathematical topics.
PDAS: Domain I: Active, Successful Student Participation in the Learning Process Domain II: Learner-Centered Instruction
Domain IV: Management of Student Discipline, Instructional Strategies, Time and Materials
Content Area: Math
CD Files: Example, handout
ISTE Standards: Technology Operations and Concepts – Students select and use applications effectively and productively.
NBEA Standards: Information Technology – Input Technologies – Use input technologies appropriately to enter and manipulate text and data.
Modification: Special Education: Lower the requirements and give individual instruction. Gifted/Talented: Require students to create a commercial advertising their cereal.
Timeframe: Allow 6 class periods for 45-minute classes or 3 class periods for full block.
Level of Difficulty: Advanced
Supplies: Word processing, graphic/drawing, presentation, and spreadsheet software
Deliverables: Box with your design on the front, document with your target market identified, marketing slogan, and sales projections. Presentation with all required elements included and the reflection.
