Tacoma, it marked the 25th anniversary of Kawa-saki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line) calls at the Port of Tacoma. According to Port of� cials, the Japan-based carrier, with its distinctive red containers, is the longest-calling international shipping line at the Port.
"We are proud of and thankful for the close part-nership that has allowed both 'K' Line and the Port of Tacoma to grow over the years," said Tong Zhu, the Port's chief commercial of� cer.
When "K" Line � rst called Tacoma in 1988, its ships berthed at a 37-acre terminal on the Sitcum Waterway. It expanded in 2005 to the 93-acre Hus-ky Terminal on the Blair Waterway. Both terminals are served by the North Intermodal Yard, whose ef-� cient on-dock rail originally attracted "K" Line to Tacoma.
When "K" Line � rst arrived, it sent two outbound trains of 40-plus rail cars each week to the Mid-west and East Coast. Back then its weekly ship call brought in about 1,700 containers. It now departs six trains of 100 cars each week, plus an additional 125 or more to and from Portland. Echoing the trend of larger ships in the trans-Paci� c trade, the Chicago Bridge, which arrived Monday, holds almost 6,000 container units.
Improvements are under way to add 100-gauge crane rail to Pier 3 and redesign an aligned Pier 4 at Husky Terminal to accommodate simultaneous berthing of larger ships in the future.

Route 99 tunnel launch pit in downtown Se-attle on Saturday for a chance to see Bertha, the massive machine that will dig the tunnel beneath the city, up-close before she starts tun-neling later this month. Guests talked to proj-ect staff, learned about the project and walked around the construction site, including one of the walkways that spans the 80-foot-deep pit where Bertha, the biggest tunnel-builder in the world, will soon start tunneling.
"This is a historic day," Governor Jay Inslee
told guests, before participating in a short cer-emony to christen the machine. "When I look down into this pit, I don't just see a big ma-chine. I see determination, I see innovation, I see teamwork, I see a symbol of a community that worked together to move us forward."
The event included activities designed to teach kids about science and engineering. Guests also had the opportunity to sign their name on one of the concrete segments that will form the tunnel's walls.
Tunneling will start after � nal testing is complete, likely by the end of this month. The tunnel is scheduled to open to drivers in late 2015.

Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food BanksLast year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of
nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wageof $7.16 it would have cost $332,260.

The City of Tacoma is accepting SEALED BIDS for the above solicita- tion. Submittals will be received and time stamped only at the Purchasing Division, located in the Tacoma Public Utilities Administration Building North, Main Floor, 3628 South 35th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409.
Bids will be received until 11:00 a.m., Pacific Time, Tuesday, Au- gust 13, 2013, at which time they will be opened by a Purchasing represent- ative and read aloud during a public bid opening held in Conference Room M-1, located on the main floor in the same building.
An electronic copy of the complete solicitation documents may be viewed and obtained by accessing the City of Tacoma Purchasing website at www.TacomaPurchasing.org. A list of vendors registered for this solicitation is also available at the website. After 1:00 p.m. the day of bid opening, pre- liminary submittal results and names of vendors submitting bids are posted to the website for public viewing.
A pre-bid meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Wednesday, July
31, 2013, at Tacoma Public Utilities, 3628 South 35th Street, Tacoma Washington, conference room ABN- 2A. The purpose of the pre-bid meet- ing is to answer questions about this solicitation and any special or techni- cal requirements, as well as the City’s SBE and LEAP goals.
Project Scope: Construct approxi- mately 1,739 linear feet of 12-inch, 8- inch, 6-inc, and 4-inch water mains and pressure reducing valve chamber in accordance with these specifications and approved plans. The work is lo- cated within the area bounded by 12th Street NE, westerly 900 L/F from 58th Ave. NE, and approximately 725 L/F of main installed within an ease- ment beginning at 59th Ave Ct NE, 250 feet north of 6th St NE, the point of beginning, then north 325 feet, then west 410 feet to 58th Ave NE.
