For the old system dealt only with certain rituals – what foods to eat and drink, rules for washing them-selves and rules about this and that. The people had to keep these rules to tide them over until Christ came with God’s new and better way. >> Hebrews 9:10

As he was starting out on a trip, a man came running up to Jesus, knelt down, and asked “Good Teacher, what should I do to get eternal life?"

" Why do you call me good? " Jesus asked. " Only God is truly good. But as for your question, you know the commandments: 'Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not testify falsely. Do not cheat. Honor your father and mother.' ”

“Teacher,” the man replied, “I've obeyed all these commandments since I was a child." Jesus felt genuine love for this man as he looked at him.

" You lack only one thing," he told him. " Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. " At this, the man's face fell, and he went sadly away because he had many possessions.

We are all infected and impure with sin. When we proudly display our righteous deeds, we find they are but filthy rags. >> Isaiah 64:6

For we all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard. >> Romans 3:23

BELIEF MISTAKE #2:

God saved you by His special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the things He planned for us long ago. >> Ephesians 2:8-10

BELIEF MISTAKE #2:

But now God has shown us a different way of being right in His sight – not by obeying the law, but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago. We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved the same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. >> Romans 3:21, 22

BELIEF MISTAKE #3:

An idol often reflects the culture we live in.

An idol is something that obscures and competes with who God is.

An idol is surrounded by rationalizations and excuses.

BELIEF MISTAKE #3:

I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, will receive now in return, a hundred times over, houses brothers, sisters, mothers children, and property – with persecutions. And in the world to come they will have eternal life. But many who seem to be important now will be the least important then, and those who are considered least here will be the greatest then. >> Mark 10:29-31
