TIDBITS® TURNS THE HEAT UP TO
BREAK THE ICEby Sarah Bates
We’re in the thick of winter! Windows are frosty, the New Year is in and we’ve settled in to wait the winter out until spring. Until the Groundhog makes his predication next month, sit back and let Tidbits give you some frigid facts on ice!• Westarttoseeitwhentheweatherdipsbelow
freezing. Whether as icicles on the edge of eaves or in an intricate hotel in Europe, that shivery, slick ice is everywhere you look, but don’t take it for granted. Did you know that modern refrigeration is often contributed to John Gorrie? This physician and inventor is considered the father of modern refrigeration. Dr. Gorrie gave up his medical career to study refrigeration and obtained a patent for a machine to make ice in 1851!
• Let’s imagine ahead to summer and thesweltering heat. Do you know what can’t be beat on a hot day in July? An ICEE. The ICEE machine was invented by Omar Knedlik back in the 60s. Did you know that the logo you see today is the very same logo from the original ICEE machine? There was even an original rendition of the famous ICEE polar bear. When the weather gets warm again in a few months, go out and get yourself an ICEE but don’t drink too fast and get a brain freeze!

TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

Walk through your fears. Fear is simply a learned response. It’s a habit. If you have a bit of trepidation when meeting strangers, this Miracle will allay your fear of those unknown beings. Attend one event a week where you don’t know anyone and don’t take anyone. The people you meet are called “strangers.” The principle reason for being fearful of meeting strangers is because most people are unprepared and unrehearsed. Rehearse The Clusters . The best remedy for fear is to prepare, and practice. Practice and practice and practice some more. Shakespeare wrote over four hundred years ago, “Act the part and become it. What Impacts Your Credit Rating?
The credit-card companies have long had suggestions for how to raise your credit score, but how badly does your credit suffer when things go wrong? The surprising answer is that those who’ve had excellent credit are penalized more heavily that those with poor credit when something goes wrong.
According to finance guru Liz Pulliam Weston, here are approximate examples of the penalty for credit scores of a mediocre 680 and an excellent 780:--Be 30 days late on a payment: a 680 score will get a penalty of 60 to 80 points, where a 780 score will get a penalty of 90 to 110 points.--Max out your card: a 680 score will get
a penalty of 10 to 30 points, while a 780 score will get a penalty of 25 to 45 points.--Suffer a foreclosure on your home: a 680 score will get a penalty of 85 to 105 points, where a 780 score will get a penalty of 140 to 160 points.--Agree to debt settlement: a 680 score will get a penalty of 46 to 65 points, where a 780 score will get a penalty of 105 to 125 points.--File for bankruptcy: a 680 score will get a penalty of 130 to 150 points, where a 780 credit score will get a penalty of a whopping 220 to 240 points.
There are some significant difference between those with 680 and 780 credit scores, one being longevity. Those with the higher credit score likely have a number of cards and a long credit history, possibly 15 years or more. The lower score is likely that of a person with only eight years of credit history.
Use of credit availability matters, too. Someone with a high credit score likely
uses less than 25 percent of the availability, compared with up to 50 percent use by someone with the lower score. This is where not closing your unused accounts comes into play: The minute you close an account, your total available credit goes down and the percent of credit you’re using on other cards rises.
If you are among the many that are seeing credit-card interest rates suddenly soar for no apparent reason, don’t close the accounts. Pay them off quickly, and then don’t use them.

Ralph Waldo Emerson stated in 1849, “Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain.”

A great way to save energy this winter is to
turn down the thermostat when you leave the
house. Also be sure to make sure your house is
as effi cient as possible. Insulate your attic and
crawl spaces to prevent heat loss and make sure
your windows and doors are properly sealed.
A little extra work goes a long way
towards a lower energy bill and
being green. The planet will
