As the saying goes, "Nobody likes a tattletale." True, but I always enjoyed
being a tattletile. Whether repofting my brothers' incessant teasing or a
classmate's misbehavior, I liked feeling "morally superior"to others. Ifelt proud
to serve as the police officer for good behavior in my world Perhaps y-ou'v_e
known -and even enjoyed-that somewhat smug feeling.
Joshua in today's first reading and John in today's Gospeldo a bit of tattling as
they complain to their leaders about people who appear to be outsiders acting
in God's name. Their complaints are dismissed because Moses and Jesus affirm
that God knows no human boundaries, and these "outsiders" are doing the
Lord's work. Not only are the tattlers' complaints rejected, but Jesus issues a
challenge to turn the eyes of judgment inward.
His images of cutting off limbs and plucking out eyes are dramatic, but his point
is simple: Remove from yourself anything that causes you or others to srn. Stop
worrying about others' behavior and focus on purging yaurself of sinful
thoughts and actions.
Seeing others'faults comes easily-it's more difficult to be the police officer ofour own behaviors. Yet we're called to be vigilant about removing elements
that lead to sin. Perhaps we need to stop associating with people who gossip.
Maybe we need to stop consuming alcohol because we're disrespectful or
engage in risky behavior after a few drinks. Perhaps we need to stop nursing
grudges and forgive someone who begs mercy fron us.
Can we look at ourselves with the observant eye of the tattletale and ask God
to help us eliminate what leads us to sin?

YEI\R OF FAITH
MYEAR OF FAMISIS
Pope Benedict XVI has declared October !\ 2oa2to November 24t 207-2.
as the Year of Faith. The upcoming Year of Faith is a "summons to an
authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of theworld" (Porta Fidei6).ln other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunityfor Catholics to experience a conversion - to turn back to Jesus and enter
into a deeper relationship with him. The "door of faith" is opened at one's baptism,
but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and
rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.
Celebrate the opening Mass of the "Year of Faith" on
Tuesday, October 9th at 7.oo p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa.

LIVING IN LOVE MINI-R.ETREAT Novernber 3-4,2412Often we say that we want to live our lives as Jesus would want us to. Sometimes
we hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body and wonder how toincorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives. Some days we feel
tike we want to love our spouse and make him or her feel loved and special. But itcan be such a mysteryto know and be able to actually make this realfor us with our
busy lives. A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors
of Passionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, here at St Stephen
Church on November 3-4.After they experienced this mini-retreat, they learned
ways to solve this mystery for their own marriage and now they want to share thisgoodnewswithothers.PIeasejointhem.Seethewebsite@formore information and to register. Or call 839o837.

de ar PAD Rf,
My sister was diuorced last year afur 10 years in an abusiye
marriage. She's met sollrcone and wants tn marry him. Slrc's
eager to start her naa lfe and doesn't want to wait for an
annulment. Sfu plans to be married next month by a judge and
then haue her marriage conualidated after her annulment is
granted. What does thnt mean? Is it OK?
Jean
DearJean,
lWhen Catholics who were married outside the Churchwant to have that marriage blessed by the Church, theblessing is performed in a ceremony called conualidation.
But don't get the wrong idea-this isn't a way aroundthe rules. A convalidated marriage is sacramental, so
your sister must meet the requirements all Catholicshave to meet before marrying in the Church: They mustbe baptized, they can't be too closely related to eachother, they need permission from their pastor, they mustbe legally free to marry, and they must be free to marryin the Church. That last requirement means that ifyoursister was sacramentally married to her first husband andhe's alive, she needs an annulment before her newmarriage can be blessed by the Church in a
convalidation ceremony.
If her new marriage takes place in a Catholic church andis presided over by a Catholic priest or deacon, restassured that her new marriage will be valid in the eyes ofthe Church.
