Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordin

ary Time 26 Sept 2004

GREETING

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Penitential Rite

My brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us call to mind our sins.

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault,

in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and

in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Opening PrayerLet us pray Father, you show your almighty

power in your mercy and forgiveness. Continue to fill us with your gifts of love. Help us to hurry toward the eternal life you promise and come to share in the joys of your kingdom.

Amen

Liturgy of the WordFirst Reading (Amos 6:1, 4-7)

Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: “Alas for those who are

at ease in Zion, and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the first of the nations, to whom the

house of Israel resorts! Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory, and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the stall; who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and like David improvise on instruments of music; who drink wine from bowls,

and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial PsalmR. Praise the Lord, my soul! It is the Lord who keeps faith

forever, who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free.

R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The Lord opens the eyes of the blind and lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous and watches over the strangers.

R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The Lord upholds the orphan and the window, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for al generations.

Second Reading(1 Timothy 6:11-16)

As for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which

you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of

our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL The Lord be with you.And also with you.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.Glory to you Lord.

Jesus told this parable to those among the Pharisees who loved money:“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what

fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.* The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called

out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” But Abraham said, “Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is

comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.” He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—that he

may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.” Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.” He said, “No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.” He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the

prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” ’

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

Profession of Faith We believe in One God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father, Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures;

He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the Right Hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For the Church, called to proclaim God’s love not only by what we preach but by what we practise in our daily lives, we pray to the Lord: R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For a growing awareness of the gulf that exists between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ and for the courage and the perseverance to bring that gulf, we pray to theLord: R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For strength and comfort for all who are suffering physically, spiritually or emotionally, we pray to the Lord: R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all the faithful departed, called to live in the glory of everlasting life, we pray to the Lord:

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

PREFACE

Father, all-powerful and ever- living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Through his cross and resurrection he freed us from sin and death and called us to the

glory that has made us a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart. Everywhere we proclaim your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with all the choirs of angles in heaven,we proclaim your glory and join in their unending hymn of praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer II

Invocation of the Holy Spirit

Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Lord’ Supper

Before he was given up to

death, a death he freely

accepted, he took bread and

gave you thanks. He broke the

bread, gave it to his disciples,

and said:

“Take this, all of you, and eat it:

this is my body which will be

given up for you.”

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said:

“Take this, all of you, and drink from it, this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

When we eat this bread,When we drink this cup,We proclaim your gloryUntil you come again.

In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.

For the Church

May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ.

In praise of God

Through him, with him, in him,in the unity of the Holy Spiritall glory and honor is yoursalmighty Fatherfor ever and ever.Amen
