UNIT 9

UNIT 9We are going to learn…

•Definition, sketch and parts of the atmosphere.•Air pollution sources.•Definition of weather.•Weather forecasts.•Weather measuring instruments.•Composition, properties and importance of air.

The Earth

< Lower layer

< Upper layers

< Outer space

The atmosphere is the layer of gases that sourrounds the Earth.

< Lower layerWe can breathe in this part. There is air.Weather occurs here.

< Upper layersWe can’t breathe in this part.Living things can not survive here

< Outer spaceThere isn’t air.There aren’t living things

THE ATMOSPHERE

THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE IS MADE UP OF AIRAIR = NITROGEN + OXYGEN + CARBON DIOXIDE

SUNNY CLOUDY CLEAR RAINY WINDY

HUMID HOT WARM COLD COOL

SNOWY FOGGY WET HUMID ICY

This is the weather in Spain today. In the north it’s cloudy, in the west it’s rainy, in the east it’s foggy and in the south it’s sunny.

MEASURING WEATHER

ThermometerThe thermometer measures

temperature

MEASURING WEATHER

AnemometerThe anemometer measures

wind speed

MEASURING WEATHER

Rain gaugeThe rain gauge

measures rain fall

MEASURING WEATHER

Weather vaneThe weather vane measures

wind direction

AIR = NITROGEN + OXYGEN + CARBON DIOXIDENITROGEN, OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE are GASES

The most abundant gas is nitrogen.

The most important gas for animals and people is oxygen. We breathe oxygen into our lungs and breathe out carbon dioxide.

Plants need carbon dioxide to make their food.Plants release oxygen into the atmosphere.

WEIGHT?

NO COLOUR: Air is invisible, it has no colour.NO SHAPE: It takes the shape of its container.NO TASTE OR SMELL: It has no taste or smell.WEIGHT: Is weight a propertie of air?

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:

EXPERIMENTDOES AIR WEIGHT?

WEIGHT:

Air does have air / Air does not have air

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:1 Question:I wonder if air has got weight.DOES AIR WEIGHT?

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:2 Hypothesis:I think that if I burst a balloon…if there is weight, the other balloon will not remain in balance.if there isn’t weight, the other ballon will remain in balance.

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:3 Conduct an experiment:

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:4 I discovered:I discovered that if I burst a balloon with a pin, the other balloon will not remain in balance.

WEIGHT:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:4 Conclusion:I know that air has weight. A balloon with air has more weight than other balloon without weight.
