Review Unit 1Maps and globes

Page 2: Social Science - Review unit 1

Maps and globes have been created to help us know how

the Earth really looks like.

Why are maps and globes important?

Page 3: Social Science - Review unit 1

Maps show the Earth as flat.

This is an old map, drew by hand.

Maps are made by carographers.

Page 4: Social Science - Review unit 1

This is a modern map, made with a computer.

A World map shows the Earth as flat.

Globes show the Earth as a sphere.Globes

Globes show the Earth as it really is, tilted on its axis.

Page 7: Social Science - Review unit 1

Maps and globes have find lots of lines, which help us locate different places on the

Earth’s surface.

Page 8: Social Science - Review unit 1

The Equator is the line which goes horizontally around the Earth, and

divides it into the Southern and Northern Hemisphere.

Page 9: Social Science - Review unit 1

The lines of latitude go horizontally around the Earth to show how north or

south a place is.The Equator is also a line of latitude.

Page 10: Social Science - Review unit 1

Lines of latitude go vertically from the North to the South Pole, to show how east

or west a place is.

Page 11: Social Science - Review unit 1

They show important naturalfeatures, such as rivers,

lakes,mountains, etc.

The different colours that we can see help us know theelevations of the areas of

land.

Physical Maps

Street MapsThey show a small area of a town or city.

We use them to find out where a place is and how to get there.

They mainly show man-made features and less natural features.

Page 15: Social Science - Review unit 1

We use a scale to show areas accurately on a map, and to know the distance between to places.

Scale 1:1000 1cm in the map = 1km in reality
