Project Focus• Built upon the ‘go to the people’ philosophy.

Project Goals• To excite and encourage students to pursue their interests in science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while involving the community in the process.

• To educate learners of all ages about space exploration. This project will help build the journey of the 21st century explorer.

Educational PackagesThe 21st Century Explorer educational packages contain a series of free bilingual educational materials, focusing on space exploration, for grades 3-5 emphasizing national and state standards-based instruction, problem-based learning, and scientific inquiry. Each of the twelve, bilingual educational packages consists of:

• a 30-second, multimedia, student-hosted newsbreak,• a web explanation of the space exploration topic,• an educator guide and student hands-on activity, and• supporting materials (glossary, quiz, and book and web resources).

All educational materials are available on a website for free access, download, and use.

Lesson ObjectiveThis lesson will help you select and compare foods

for spaceflight suitability, and package them for spaceflight.

Learning ObjectivesThe students will• select foods to test for spaceflight suitability.• subject foods to spaceflight suitability testing

based upon criteria.• collect data by sorting foods based upon the

results of the suitability for spaceflight testing.• develop packaging for the suitable foods for

spaceflight.• develop a conclusion based upon the results of

this activity.

What types of tests would qualify the foods for spaceflight?

Tests might include:• handling the food to test for crumbs• wafting the food to test for desirable smells• simulated bite test to produce crumbs• reviewing the food label to test for proper nutrition and portion size

Discuss the packaging materials you have to use and determine which packaging material would be best for each food.

Package the foods with the food packaging material. Label each Food item with mailing labels or tape and a marker
