AUGUST 24, 2014 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME www.stmaryfc.org Reflecting on God’s Word Certain questions change lives, depending on our answer: “Do you take this person to be your husband/wife?” “Do you want this job?” “Can you forgive me?” The question Jesus asks today is one that certainly changes lives. Our response is not simply an academic exer- cise, a matter of knowing the right answer we learned from a book. Our answer must lead to a commitment that is to be lived out each day of our lives. Peter’s answer certainly changed the course of his life. Jesus recognized that it was not Peter’s innate knowledge, or that of any other person, that had given Peter his re- sponse: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” It was the Father. And so Jesus declares that Peter will be the one to lead the other disciples and all who would come after. Simon, son of John, fisherman, husband, brother—and one who would deny he ever knew Christ!—he was to be the rock on which Jesus would build the church. His response was life-changing. Peter’s answer was not a perfect one, as we shall see next week. Even so, Jesus ac- cepts it as an indication that his Father is at work in those called to be with him who would continue his work. The Father chose to work in fallible human beings. Dear Parishioners, This weekend we welcome Rev. Desmond Tynan to Saint

Mary, who as part of our Missionary cooperative, will be speaking about the Missionary Society of Saint James the Apostle. Today’s second collection taken up for the propagation of the faith will benefit the Missionary Society of Saint James the Apostle and their missions in South America. Thank you for your generous support of the missions. We welcome Bishop George Rassas to Saint Mary of the Annunciation on Saturday, September 6th. Bishop Rassas will preside over the 5:00 p.m. and celebrate the Rite of Installation at which I will be installed as the 18th pastor of Saint Mary. I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received since my arrival. I ask for your prayers as I assume the duties and responsibilities of pastor and look to the future with hope. I am very happy to be here and look for-ward to serving this community for many years to come. Our kickoff/information meeting for Parish Transfor-mation is scheduled for Wednesday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. In order for the Parish Transformation process to accurately reflect the real needs and hopes of Saint Mary, the team should be made up of parish-ioners that represent a cross section of ages, areas of interest, ethnicities, and levels of involvement.

The Parish Transformation Road Map Through Parish Transformation we will evaluate how we are living out Christ’s mission through our parish community in today’s world. Here is a brief preview of the questions and topics we will reflect upon:

• How is mission is at the heart of our parish life? • What are our “Pearls of Great Price?” In other words,

what is special about our parish that we should cele-brate and build upon?

• Who are we as a parish? What is important to us? What do we appear to value the most?

• How are we living out the 7 “Building Blocks for Mis-sion?” The 7 Building Blocks are: Evangelization, Catechesis, Prayer & Worship, Communion, Mission-ary Spirit, Call to Holiness and Spiritual Stewardship. These building block will be explained in greater de-tail in the coming weeks.

Based on these reflections, a “Mission Narrative” will be written. The Mission Narrative is not meant to replace our mission statement. Rather, it is meant to articulate a relevant vision of how we are called to carry out our mission. This vision is based on who we are as a parish, what we value, and what inspires us. The “Mission Nar-rative” will set the foundation for developing an action plan that will include specific goals and actions for how we will live out Christ’s mission even more vibrantly. We will then break into smaller groups to develop spe-cific plans for Mission and Finance and Catholic Educa-tion. The final product of our efforts will be a plan that articulates how the people of Saint Mary aspire to more fully live out Christ’s mission. The plan will in-clude measurable goals and strategies to support our mission financially. Our team will present the final plan to Bishop George Rassas in celebration of our efforts and to kick off the implementation of our plan. An important element of the Parish Transforma-tion process involves receiving feedback from as many people in the parish as process. This includes parishion-ers who for whatever reason do not attend Sunday every week. As I spoke with Fr. Ron Lewinski, he informed me that St Mary has participated in similar surveys in the past. While there may be some similarities, this sur-vey will offer the Parish Transformation team critical data including information in regards to what we may need to do differently as a parish. Our goal will be to get as many parishioners as possible to complete this sur-vey. This will require many of us to personally invite and encourage parishioners that we know to take the survey. Our on-line survey will be available in early September. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry [email protected]

Emergency Appeal for Iraq Millions of our Iraqi brothers and sisters are suffering displacement and terror from the Islamic State of Iraq and greater Syria (ISIS). Reli-gious minorities, including Christians, Shia Muslims, and Turkmen are being attacked and murdered. The lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families are in peril and in need of meaningful interventions to prevent further catastrophe. CRS is seeking support for humanitarian efforts, which are critical to protecting and saving lives immediately, as well as preparing for the needs ahead. Please pray for peace and unity and consider donating to Catholic Relief Services: www.ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/IraqEmergencyAppeal.

Choir Rehearsals Resume August 27

Singers Sought for Vibrant Parish Ministry

Our parish choir rehearses on Wednesday nights, 7:00–9:00 PM, in the choir room, and sings for the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass, September through May. We also sing for Christmas Eve Mass, Holy Week litur-gies, and holy days of obligation. Singers of high school age and older, of all levels of experience, are invited to sing with us. See Fred Vipond at the organ console after any weekend Mass or contact him: [email protected].

Rev. Eugene L. Keusal was pastor from 1983 to 1996. On August 5th, 1984, Cardinal Bernardin, in obser-vance of the 120th anniversary of the founding of the parish, concelebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with Father Morrissey and Father Keusal, the former and present pastor. That day, while attending the Pork and Corn Roast, His Eminence was presented with a cowboy hat and a ceramic piggy bank, mementos symbolizing the rural atmosphere and the annual sum-mer event. Cardinal Bernardin wore the cowboy hat all day long.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past.

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak

“Life on the Train” We’re at the peak of vacation time, and some of you may have gone on or are planning a vacation that includes a train trip. Two train trips on my “Bucket List” are the California Zephyr trip to San Francisco and the Canadian Rockies tour. Riding trains for me, has been a very remarkable experience. Some of my most inner thoughts have been explored on a train, while swaying from side-to-side, click-ing-clacking for hundreds of miles.

Life is like a train. We get on. We ride. We get off. At times we get back on and ride some more. There are hold ups and there are delays. At certain stops there are surprises. Some of these will translate into great moments of joy, some will result in profound sorrow.

When we are born and we board the train for the first time, we meet people whom we think will be with us for the entire journey. Those people are our parents. Sadly, this is far from the truth. Our parents are with us for as long as we absolutely need them. They too have journeys they must complete. We live with the memories of their love, affection, friendship, guidance and their ever presence. There are others who board the train and who eventually become important to us. These people are our brothers, sisters, friends and acquaintances who we will learn to love and cherish.

Some people who are on this train will consider the journey like a lighthearted tour. No matter what happens, they will roll merrily along. Others, will encounter upsets, tears, and losses on the journey. Some people on the train will leave a lasting impression when they get off. Some will get on and off the train so quickly that they will scarcely leave a sign that they ever travelled with us or crossed our paths.

Sometimes we will be upset that some passengers who we love, will choose to sit in another compartment and leave us to travel on our own. Then, there is nothing that says we can’t seek them out after they have left us. Nevertheless, once sought out and found, we may not be able to sit next to them because the seat is already taken. That’s okay…everybody’s journey will be filled with hopes, dreams, chal-lenges, setbacks and goodbyes. We must strive to make the best of ride, no matter what…We must constantly strive to understand our travel companions and look for the best in all of them, no matter how mysterious they or we may appear.

But the biggest mystery of our journey is that we don’t know when our last stop will come. Neither do we know when our travel compan-ions will make their last stop, not even those sitting in the seat next to us. Personally, I know that I’ll be sad to make my last stop…I’m sure of it. My separation from all those friends I made during the train ride will be painful. Leaving all those I’m close to will be a sad thing. But I am reassured because I am certain that one day I’ll get to the main station only to meet up with almost everyone I have travelled with.

We’re all on this train ride together. Above all else we should try to make the ride as pleasant and memorable as we can, right up until we each make the final stop and leave the train for the final time.

All aboard! May God bless your journey! BON VOUAGE! 8/14-2

Commemorative Parish History Books The commemorative Sesquicentennial parish history is now available in the parish office during normal business hours. "Nothing is Im-possible with God: the Story of St. Mary of the Annunciation, Fremont Center, Illinois" com-memorates our rich history and spiritual heri-tage from the very beginning of the Catholic

community in Fremont Center to the events of our Sesquicentennial year. The richly illustrated narrative honors the faithful witness of gen-erations and the abundant blessings our parish has enjoyed over the past 150 years and should inspire us to make our own contribution to the proud history of our parish and be faithful stewards of the sacred inheritance we have received from our ancestors in Christ. Available at the parish office, $10.00. For anyone interested in a more extensive chronology of key events in the history of the parish and Fremont Center with a particular focus

on the German families who pioneered the parish, "The Chronicle of St. Mary of the An-nunciation" is also available. This exhaustively-researched volume features never-before-seen excerpts from the correspondence of early parishioners, land maps, newspaper clippings, photos and more and is available on a print-on-demand basis at: http://www.cafepress.com/

Sesquicentennial Improvements As our 150th Anniversary Jubilee nears its joyous conclusion, we are looking at various parish needs that will help us improve the beauty and function of our special campus as we move into the future. As our budget resources are very limited, we would very much welcome donations to one or more of these special projects so that they can move from hope to reality:

Little Church Kitchen Rehab the kitchen: fix plumbing and electrical problems, replace old cabinets, flooring and ap-pliances, etc. We estimate that this project will cost at least $30,000. Little Church Stained Glass There are two separate projects for this item. First, several of the stained glass windows have been damaged and need to be repaired. We have not yet obtained an official estimate, but we be-lieve that fixing the broken windows will cost at least $10,000. Also, the protective glass on the outside of the stained glass needs to be replaced. This would cost at least another $10,000. Handicap Doors Install electrical doors at the main entrance of the church to enable improved ingress/egress for those with physical disabilities. We estimate that this project will cost at least $5,000. Trees A large number of trees on our campus, particu-larly around the new church and parking lot, have died and need to be replaced. The cost for each tree and planting is about $350.

One of our prime projects from the past was to widen the main driveway. Unfortunately, this project has been prolonged by procedural red tape and various governmental requirements. We believe that these have now been resolved and that we will soon have our permit. We will keep you informed as we move towards performing this long-awaited improvement. Just as you have a long “honey do” list around your home, St. Mary has a considerable list, too. The above items just scratch the surface. If you would like to help us make these projects a reality, we would greatly appreciate any additional financial assistance you can provide. Gifts of any size would be of great help. If you’d like to help, simply mark a plain envelope with the project(s) of your choice and place your gift in the Sunday collection basket. You may also turn in your donation at the Parish Office. We are grateful for your support and look forward to making St. Mary’s campus even more beautiful and functional in the months ahead.

Meeting Rooms Sound System The sound system in our three meeting rooms no longer functions reliably and needs to have some of its electronic components replaced. Estimated cost of this improvement is $2000. New TV and Cart We have need for another widescreen television and cart for use in our meeting rooms and nar-thex. The cost of these items would be approxi-mately $3000. Ossuary and Stand An ossuary is the liturgical receptacle for holding cremated remains during a funeral liturgy. As more funerals are celebrated in this manner, we want to ensure that the deceased are given their rightful dignity. Cost is about $3500–$5000. New Hymnals Our hymnals show the effects of wear and tear (some were purchased in 1996 and moved to the new church from use in Diantha Hall) and do not reflect the recent changes implemented in the Mass texts. We will soon need to replace them. Approximate cost is $10,000.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Faith is not all somber and serious. I am convinced that God has a great sense of humor (or else I am in BIG trouble!) and

that He makes His presence felt in laughter. Here are a few funny one-liners from church signs I received via email (some which you may have read before). I hope they make you laugh (or in a few cases, think) as they did for me!

• Don't let your worries get the best of you; remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

• Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.

• Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers. • Church parking for members only! Trespassers will be baptized! • You are not too bad to come in. You are not too good to stay out. • Searching for a new look? Have your faith lifted here! • It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one. • The good Lord didn't create any thing without purpose, but mosqui-

toes come close! • When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there. • People are funny: they want the front of the bus, middle of the road,

and back of the church. • Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on the front door

forever. • Quit griping about your church - if it were perfect, you couldn't be-

long. • God so loved the world that He did not send a committee. • Come in and pray today. Beat the Christmas rush! • When down in the mouth, remember Jonah. He came out alright. • If a church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it

has. • God Himself doesn't propose to judge a man until he is dead. So

why should you? • Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and perma-

nently set. • How will you spend eternity – Smoking or Non-smoking? • We're called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges. • Be ye fishers of men. You catch 'em – He'll clean 'em. • Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous. • Don't put a question mark where God put a period. • Forbidden fruits create many jams. • God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. • God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. • He who angers you, controls you. • It is unlikely there'll be a reduction in the wages of sin. • Try Jesus. If you don’t like Him, the devil will always take you back. • The Will of God never takes you to where the Grace of God will not

protect you. • If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns. Have a great week! If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in New Franken, Wisconsin, October 4th, 2014 The Marian apparition at the Shrine was granted official Church approval on December 8, 2010. The Shrine preserves the spot where the Queen of Heaven ap-peared to a young Belgian immigrant woman named

Adele Brise in 1859. The message of the Blessed Virgin to Adele was simple: Teach the Catholic Faith to the children of the people who were losing their faith through neglect. Adele took this message to heart, and for 35 years, dedicated her life to this mission. REP Begins After Labor Day It’s time to think about the fall session of our Religious Education Program. School begins in a few weeks and our sessions will be-gin after Labor Day. St. Mary’s Religious Education Program serves children in the parish in grades K-8th grade who attend our local public schools. Formal faith formation begins as early as Kindergarten, but by 1st grade children need to be registered in order to prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion in 2nd grade. If you are new to St. Mary and would like to register your children in REP, please contact the parish office to first register with the parish. If you are a returning family, please send in your registrations forms as soon as possible. Registration forms can be found on the parish web site at

www.stmaryfc.org, click on the REP page and then click on regis-tration forms, or forms are in the kiosk in the narthex. If you have children, that for whatever reason, may be behind in their formal faith formation, please contact me at the parish office so we can discuss the best option for your child. Questions? Contact Sue Matousek, Director of Religious Education at 847-223-0010 x 218 or [email protected].

Proclaiming the Word LECTOR TRAINING Lectors have a critical role in the cele-bration of the Mass. Since lectors pro-claim not just any word, but the word of God, it is essential that they develop the skills required to communicate God’s message competently. Through the use of voice, eye contact and personal presence lec-tors help God’s Word come alive for the assembly. This training will provide the skills and self-confidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish.
