A recent study revealed that patients with normal-tension glaucoma are at higher risk of losing their vision if they are being treated for systemic hypertension. The prevailing line of thought had been that getting blood pressure down to as low of levels as possible was the best way to go. Researchers discovered this was not the case. Normal-tension glaucoma causes vision loss and optic nerve damage without abnormal eye pressure. The study involved 85 patients. 32% of the participants had both systemic hypertension and normal-tension glaucoma. The amount and duration of decreases in nocturnal blood pressure in addition to treatment of hypertension also was an indicator for the progression of the glaucoma. On the Roadway, Cell Phones are asDangerous as Alcohol Intoxication

When driving conditions and time on task were

controlled for, the impairments associated with using a cell phone while driving can be as profound as those associated with driving while drunk.

That was the conclusion of Distraction.Gov, “The Official

U.S. Government Web Site For Distracted Driving.”

I was reminded of the dangers of cell phone usage by my patient, who fortunately survived a driver who reached for his cell phone and took his eyes off the roadway, all while traveling at highway speeds.

The distracted driver crossed three lanes of traffic, striking my patient’s car in the rear,

which caused the struck car to spin out of control until it finally struck the guardrail.

My patient was luckily unharmed. But police and government officials are stymied over how to stop people from reflexively answering their phones while behind the wheel of a 3,000 pound vehicle traveling at 55 MPH.

65% of MacularDegeneration

Explained by Genetics

The AMD Gene Consortium, published in the March 2013 of Nature Genetics, has discovered seven new loci associated with

an increased risk of AMD. The consortium also confirmed 12 loci identified in previous studies. With these latest findings, genetics explain 65% of macular degeneration.

higher risk for progression of their glaucoma compared to the patients who had normal blood pressure. Treating patients with beta blockers provided no protection against the progression of visual field loss.

Researchers acknowledge that treating normal-tension glaucoma patients who also suffer from hypertension requires a team approach. The potential consequences of not treating high blood pressure are significant but preserving the vision of the patient also needs to be taken into consideration when pursuing a course of treatment.

A research team based at Tufts University near Boston is set to begin a study that will look at the effect of egg consumption on cognitive function in people over the age of 50. Researchers expect to prove that egg consumption is beneficial to neurological health.

The focus of the study will be on lutein and zeaxanthin which are found in egg yolk. These two carotenoids help filter out detrimental blue wavelengths of light and are also antioxidants, which help to protect against macular degeneration and cataracts.

Previous studies have pointed

towards eggs increasing serum lutein concentrations in older adults. The study will include men and women over the age of 50 in a six-month, placebo-controlled trial comparing two eggs versus four ounces of egg substitute daily.
