Chapter 1

ONCE UPON A TIME, A boy named“Chetan” who lived in a small town named

“Pratappur” .His town was situated in the borderarea of “West Bengal” and “Bangladesh”. His family

was a middle class family. His father’s name was“Lajpat”. Mother’s name was “Rekha” and he had ayounger brother named “Rishi”. Lajpat earned

enough money for their household expenses; he hada small grocery shop. Chetan and Rishi both wereintelligent but Chetan was more intelligent thanRishi. Chetan was good in his academic discipline, sports and other co curricular activities. Chetanloved to play cricket and tennis. Chetan’s father wasproud of his son because Chetan always clinched the

first or second rank in his class and he always gotthe scholarship for his achievement. Lajpat loved hisboth sons.

Chetan was a well known student in his school.Students, teachers and even clerical staff knew him, loved him because of his performance and

simplicity. When he was in tenth standard, his school

principal chooses him as school captain. ButChetan’s seniors were not happy with this decision.

They felt jealous and so they started complaining to the authority. They thought that, it was animprudent decision of principal. They wanted areason for why they were ignored and Chetan wasselected without the procedure of election.

Four students of twelfth standard decided totalk to the principal. They were “Shyam”, “Parvez”,“Neeraj” and “Shashi”. Their leader was Parvez. OnMonday morning they went to principal’s office,

Parvez--Good morning sir.Sir, “pardon us but we do not agree with your decision on appointing Chetan as captain, without an election.”

Principal— Why? “What’s the matter?”Parvez—Sir, “we are seniors and making him

captain instead of one of us is like alienating oursuperiority”.

Principal—“No son, it’s not like that .Chetan isa capable boy, and my decision has nothing to do

with superiority or inferiority.”Parvez— “but sir........Principal—“now you may leave, I have nothing

to say more.” They slowly moved out of the office filled with

anguish and jealousy. These boys started teasing and humiliating Chetan all around the school. The

principal is informed about this nuisance going around and ultimately the boys are expelled fromthe school. Chetan didn’t mind the nuisance andcarried on his duty. The expelled four studentsbelonged to elite class families and because of theirparent’s influence, they got readmitted. The principal

was against their readmission but he was under

immense pressure from the trusties and eventually

he acquiesces. Principal knew that, they couldcertainly harm Chetan, thus, he always kept his eyes

on them. The pre board exams of 12th standard were likely to come. Parvez and his friends weredumb and consequently, they were going to leak thequestion papers of all the subjects through an officestaff named “Chetram”. Chetram was one of thesuperior staff of the school’s office. His duty was topack the question papers of all the different subjectsin their respective envelop and mark the school sealon them. So, he easily xeroxed the question papersin the office itself when he was alone and suppliedto the students at an exorbitant price. One day after

the school hours, Chetan comes to the school as hehad forgotten his science exhibition file in the officeand meanwhile Chetram was busy in Xeroxing thequestion papers. Chetan embarks inside the officeand luckily he looks upon the papers which were inthe hands of Chetram, he caught him red handidly but he acted like he didn’t see anything. He speedily

headed towards principal house which was situatedin the teacher’s colony nearby. Chetan told himelaborately about what he just saw.

Without squandering a moment principal wentto the school and caught him in the office withthe question papers. Chetram sweated. Principalinterrogates him spontaneously. Next day he

announced the investigation regarding leak of question papers. Chetram spit the student’s names of

12th standard including Parvez, Shyam, Neeraj andShashi. Principal expelled all of them immediately and praised Chetan. Principal knew that Chetan

till his 12th class and he proved that too. Chetan’s

first priority was studies. He was a curious boy.He believed that knowledge and literacy are very essential elements of human life and we shouldincrease our knowledge day by day. We can getunlimited rewards from our intellectuality. We canunravel our whole problems and dilemma througheducation. Education makes us capable and brave inall fields.

Chapter 2

Chetan was not an atheist but he still didn’tbelieve in God. He often did blasphemy

.Actually, when Chetan was five year old he visitedhis grandmother’s home with his mother “Rekha”and brother “Rishi” in rainy season. Hisgrandmother’s house was situated on the banks of ariver and it was a small village. All of them were

enjoying their holidays. Days passed happily andrainy season started. As usual Chetan and his family had dinner and went to sleep. Because of heavy rainfall, the river overflowed and caused flood andconsequently, chaos was seen all around. People

were running hither and thither for saving their life, children, young, and old all of them. Water deluged

and the whole village sunk. A large number of people were either dead or missing. Chetan’s motherand brother were also missing. Chetan was able tofind his grandmother only and she was alive. Aftersome time Chetan finds his mother and brotherdead. Chetan was shocked and he was not

understanding, what to do, and what not. He took

their corpse and sat to a safe area with hisgrandmother. Both were crying and mourning heavily. It was a very dreadful situation.

Next day the political leaders and governmentofficers came for the inspection. The whole village

was messed and one could see only corpse andmud lying everywhere. The policy makers seemed

irresponsible insouciant about the precautionary measures. Lajpat heard this bad news andimmediately moved towards village with all the badfeelings crawling through his mind unknown aboutthe fact yet. He reached village and saw the worstscenario. He felt like that there was no groundbeneath his feet. He saw Chetan and his mother in-law sitting near a hut. Chetan saw his father andhugged him tightly and started crying. Lajpat alsostarted crying and asked Chetan,

Lajpat— “how are you my son?” “It looks likethe wrath of the God”. “How this happened?”

Chetan—(he told about the entire story and

about Rekha and Rishi).Lajpat(in a crying voice)—“It’s God’s will my son, we can’t do anything.”

Lajpat controlled himself and recollected hisinner strength to handle the situation, as the old lady

wasn’t able to endure her daughter’s and grandson’sdeath, anything could happen to her in this age.

Lajpat along with Chetan and his grandmother cameback to their town and started a new life. Threeof them tried to complete each other. Chetan wasnurtured by his grandmother thereafter. Chetan wasgrowing big and along with him the ill feeling towards God was developing within him at a fast

pace. Chetan had now learned to lead his life, leaving

behind all those tremors of past. There was no inefficiency on his father’s part for

taking care of Chetan. He had appointed a maidat home to look after Chetan as his grandmother

was also growing old and thus needed rest. Looking forward to Chetan’s capabilities and competence, theschool authorities had arranged for his scholarship

up to 12th standard. This was done with theintention of motivating Chetan to regain his interestin studies and make his carrier.

Chetan was interested in mathematics subjectand loved to solve the mathematics question. Afterclearing his tenth standard he choose mathematics

stream in 11th

standard. He successfully clinchedthe top rank in 11th standard in his school and

clinched the top rank in his entire district in 12th

class. Chetan’s wanted to become an engineer andLajpat too desired the same for his child. Chetan andLajpat both wanted that Chetan should go Kolkata

for further studies. Chetan also intended to make hisfather proud of him and so he starts the preparationfor his entrance exam. Chetan appears for P.E.Tand A.I.E.E.E but cracks P.E.T. He thereafter iskeenly involved in studies. He moves to Kolkata ashe gets admission in a reputed college. The campusatmosphere for studies in Kolkata was favourable.

After his mother and brother’s death, hepreferred to stay alone and so he never stayed incollege hostel. He hired a room on rent and settledthere. The owner of the room was a descent man;he just wanted to maintain a peaceful decorum anddemanded the rent duly. Chetan called his father and

THREE AND HALF YEARS LATER. Chetan

was leading a peaceful life. And his landlordnever complained about him. Chetan cleared hisseven semesters in first grade and he was selected ina reputed company in his campus selection. Now,Chetan had only seven months left to become anengineer.

One night approximately at. 9 p.m. he heardsome movement outside his room. He peepedthrough his window and saw that, his owner and aboy were coming towards him. The owner stated,

Owner—“Chetan, he is Abhimanyu.”“Abhimanyu, he is Chetan”, and Abhimanyu is my new tenant, he will live in the room besides yours.

Abhimanyu, make yourself comfortable, Chetan willtell you about the local life style. OK, goodnightboth of you.

( Owner left the room ). Abhimanyu mannerly wished Chetan.

“Abhimanyu looked like a good boy but he wasn’t.

He seemed to be good from his face but he was not

from his soul. Abhimanyu obviously was strangerfor Chetan and so he didn’t know anything about

Abhimanyu. How Abhimanyu portrayed himself,Chetan had to accept it. Chetan was not matureenough to identify people’s reality”. Abhimanyu’sfather was a rich man, and Abhimanyu had comeKolkata for his graduation in commerce. Chetan

and Abhimanyu’s colleges were situated on the sameroad. It was only a formality for Abhimanyu, tocome Kolkata for making his career as he actually didn’t needed it. Abhimanyu was three years youngerthan Chetan. So, as a senior he stated,

Chetan—Look Abhimanyu, you came here foryour education, and I don’t like any noise ornuisance. You have to focus on your educationonly. You have whole life left for your enjoyments.(“Abhimanyu was exactly opposite of Chetan”).

Chapter 4

“Abhimanyu was coxcomb because of hisfather’s wealth. “He was an addict,

cannabis addict”. He smoked “marijuana”, he daily consume marijuana. And Chetan was unaware of

Abhimanyu’s squalid habit. Chetan thought that Abhimanyu is of a spruce character. Abhimanyu hadindulged in this vicious addiction when he was in

10th

standard. Abhimanyu was the younger son of his family and hence he was given excess freedomfrom his parents. Abhimanyu thought that, “money is the most valuable stuff in life; we can do anything from money, anything”.

Abhimanyu used to go somewhere out to hidefrom Chetan and consumed marijuana. He was

afraid of Chetan and at the same time he respectedhim. He was of the view that, hiding the truth wasthe only best way. He thought that, “If Chetan andthe landlord came to know about this, it would beinsulting for him”. Four months had passed both of them living together and Chetan was still unaware

of Abhimanyu’s addiction. Both led a happy life.

But Chetan was unaware of God’s verdict which was going to ruin his happiness. Chetan’s exam wereabout to begin, three months were left and likeprevious exams, he expected to clear with top marks.

Chetan was now studying late nights to completehis syllabus and he used to like this, late nightstudying, as there was no disturbance around. One

night when Chetan was studying in his room, ataround 2’o’clock he heard that the main door isbeing opened. He peeps out through his window and finds Abhimanyu entering the gate. He movesnear him and asks,

Chetan—“where are you coming from?” Abhimanyu—oh! “I had been to a movie with

my friends and as it was a night show so, I decidedto sleep at one of my friend’s room, but as I wentthere I saw there was no place for me”. So I cameback and that’s why I am late. And by the way brother, “why the film makers make the same kindof film again and again based on virus, alien etc.

Chetan—They make what they like, thatshouldn’t bother u. Abhimanyu— Ya, I know that’s not my concern,

I am just asking.Chetan— OK, It’s fine, now go on sleep.(as

Abhimanyu heads towards his room, Chetan findsthat, Abhimanyu was not walking in a normal

manner and so he thinks that, it might be becausehe was sleepy. He also remembers that his eyes werered as tomatoes. But the truth was something else”)

Next night Abhimanyu was again late and givesa new excuse. The third night he doesn’t returnsand when Chetan asked him about his night out,

Abhimanyu ignores. Chetan thinks that, “this boy is

the truth”. So he decides to check out his room inhis absence. He was sure that Abhimanyu was hiding something. This concern was because Chetan treatedhim like his younger brother. There by Chetan getsthe second key of his room from the landlord. Onthis the landlord questioned him,

Landlord—“What will you do with this key?”

Chetan—Sir, one of my important stuff is keptin his room and I need it now and I feel that, he isnot going to come back tonight.

( Landlord trusted Chetan and so hands himthe keys ).

Chapter 5

Chetan took the keys and moves fast towards hisroom. At the meanwhile a thought was running

through his mind that, “I shouldn’t find anything suspicious in his room”. He opens the lock, entersthe room, and starts rummaging everywhere. Helooks into each and every item of the room, in thealmira, beneath the bed but in vain. He thanks God

that his younger brother wasn’t involved in any erroneous job. He steps towards the gate butsuddenly stops, and goes into the bathroom with athought that the bathroom was left unchecked. Hechecks each and every item there but again no use.Suddenly he finds a plastic wrapped on something

which was hidden behind the commode in the flush

tank. He picks it up, unwraps it, and is shocked tofind marijuana hidden inside it. He was very astonished on knowing this fact that Abhimanyuconsumed this.
