under ‘Public Liability Policy’Sir, While one comes across a number of accidents involving

LPG cylinders and resulting in the loss of lives/ /properties, thereis not much information as to whether any compensation has beenmade available to the victims by the oil companies or its distribu-tors.

As per the Public Liability Insurance Policies taken by thepublic sector oil companies, for accidents involving LPG, compen-sation is payable to the victims and also for the damage to theproperties after due assessment. The LPG distributors act asprincipals and are responsible for taking insurance policy foraccidents, including third party insurance cover. In addition, thecompanies also take a comprehensive insurance policy called‘Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries’. The above mentionedinsurance policies taken by the companies and the distributorsare ‘Public Liability Policies’ and are not in the name of anyindividual consumer.

The policy awards various compensations depending on theextent of injury or death or damage to property or all the three.

In case of an accident, the victim should immediately advise thedistributor. Whenever an accident is reported, the concerned areaoffice investigates the cause and notifies the nearest office of theinsurance company and subsequently lodges the claim on behalfof the consumer. Consumers are not required to apply to insur-ance company or to contact them directly. The relevant docu-ments as needed are to be submitted to the oil company by theconsumer. Claims are settled based on the merit of each case.

Water crisis in Mambalam and T. NagarSir, While there is a huge agitation in the state for closing

TASMAC shops, I wonder how many are aware of the loomingwater crisis in Chennai. Mambalam and T. Nagar are among themost affected areas. The situation has worsened in the past twomonths. The Corporation’s claim that piped water is suppliedevery alternate day is farcical as the pressure in the pipeline lowand does not reach most of the inner roads.

Since Metrowater is not able to fulfill the demand throughwater tankers, residents are forced to buy from private suppliersat astronomical prices. While Metrowater charges Rs. 900 for a fulltanker load (about 12,000 liters) the rate charged by privatesuppliers varies from Rs. 2,100 to Rs. 2,500. The monthly spendingon water is affecting the livelihood of a number of middle andlower middle class families. Will the Tamilnadu Govt. wake up tothe problem before it gets out of hand? – V.
