YKLETTERS TO THE EDITOR

ID or address proof not necessary for renewingMTC ID card

Sir, After my letter requesting MTC not to insist on ID oraddress proof for renewals was published in Mambalam Timesrecently, MTC has replied favourably.

It its letter, a copy of which has also been sent to the officialsin T. Nagar depot, it has stated that suitable instructions havebeen given to all the counter staff to collect a copy of ration cardonly from senior citizens applying for free bus tokens for thefirst time for issue of ID card and not at the time of renewal.

Hence, MTC will not insist on xerox copies of Aadhaar cardand ration card during subsequent renewal from Dec. 21 to Jan.30. Similarly, the old ID card need not be surrendered at thetime of renewal and will have to be produced only for verifica-tion. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Open house meets necessary in MTC depotsSir, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) should con-

duct open house meetings every month in its depots to find andaddress the problems encountered by the commuters. Seniorcitizens who avail of free travel coupons also face innumerableproblems.

Besides the officials, the crew should also attend such meet-ings so that they will provide an opportunity for MTC tounderstand the woes they face with public and vice versa.

MTC can utilize such meetings to clarify its own stance withregard to fleet strength, frequency of service, poor service incertain routes etc. T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Associa-tion, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

IOC responds to reader’s grievanceSir, After the publication of my letter in Mambalam Times

about the LPG delivery boys not carrying weighing machines,Indian Oil Corporation has written to me stating that itregularly advises its distributors to counsel their delivery boysto ensure that they carry portable weighing scales and deliverthe cylinders to the customers after confirming the correctweight. The letter also states that it will send a reminder againto all its distributors in this regard.

In case of grivances, IOC has advised consumers to filecomplaints in its customer service cell at 500, Anna Salai,Teynampet, either in person or over phone (2433 9246 or 24339238). V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Residents served acquisition notice appeal foruse of rail property instead

Sir, Under the Land Acquisition Act, Tamilnadu Govern-ment has issued notices to a number of property owners on theeastern side of Kodambakkam Railway Station in connectionwith the development of the 2nd phase of the Metro Rail projectin the 17.4-km long Corridor 4 (Orange Line) from Light Houseto CMBT with 20 stations.

As per the notices, around 200 families in some of the areaslisted below are likely to be affected by the acquisition:

1. Portion of Thiyagaraya Gramani Street2. Gangai Amman Koil Street3. Ram Temple in Mambalam High Road4. Two public toilets in Mambalam High Road5. Three lanes of Lala Thottam6. Portion of Unnamalai Amman Street including five apart-

ment complexes7. Flats in Mambalam High Road including two apartment

complexes8. Portion of Ramakrishna Street including three apartment

complexes9. Kali Mandir and Police out-post in Mambalam High Road10. Portion of Vivekananda Street11. Portion in Chari Street including two apartment com-

plexesMost of the residents have been living here for more than two

generations. On scrutiny, we find that more than 130 seniorcitizens will be affected and from the date they saw the ‘notice’in the local dailies in the 1st week of November, they are undersevere mental stress and agony.

While the survey numbers are in order, under the owners’column, in some cases, it has been stated as RamakrishnaMission. Ramakrishna Mission had sold the properties during1962-64, and we wonder how the Revenue Department ofTamilnadu Government has not updated its records.

We further add that on the western side of Kodambakkamsuburban station, railways own enough land including a fewunused railway quarters, which can be utilized by CMRLwithout disturbing the residents of the above areas.

Recently, the Corporation collected details of each and everybuilding to revise property tax. Such being the case, it couldhave easily provided the recent correct details of all owners ofthis area to CMRL to publish notice/ advertisement in thedailies. On glancing through the proposal of acquisition inVivekananda Street alone, more than ten senior citizens arelikely to be affected. We appeal to CMRL not to put them tohardship. There will be 6 stations in the neighbourhood, namelyNandanam, Natesan Park, Panagal Park, Kodambakkam,Meenakshi College and Power House. When the project wasannounced some five years back, the stretch betweenVadapalani and Nandanam was to be underground. It was alsolearnt that Chennai Metro Rail Limited has changed therouting several times between Vadapalani and Panagal Park, and, as per the latest proposal, our area will be affected. It isnot known if the educational institutions and hospitals fallingwithin this corridor will also be affected.

Moreover, the distance between the proposedKodambakkam Metro Station and the Kodambakkam Subur-ban Station is hardly 30 meters. Setting up another stationwithin such a short distance in unnecessary and will not getpatronage as the suburban fare is much lower. We also fail tounderstand why two metro rail stations are planned within ashort distance in Kodambakkam, one at Meenakshi College inArcot Road and the other on Mambalam High Road.

In the recent meeting, a committee of the affected ownerswas set up to take up the issue with the authorities concerned. The committee has also sent an appeal to the Prime Minister.

While every citizen looks forward to continued improvementto their living conditions, such decisions by CMRL, ignoring theland owned by Southern Railway and Revenue Department ofGuindy Taluk of Tamilnadu Government will create unneces-sary hardship for residents of this area. For further clarifica-tion, affected owners may contact S. Pasupaty (VivekanandaStreet, Kodambakkam, Ph: 99620 96929. VivekanandaStreet Residents’ Welfare Association, North T. Nagar

Perennial congestion at Station Road-Lake ViewRoad junction

Sir, There is heavy traffic congestion, especially during peakhours, at the junction of Station Road / Lake View Road in WestMambalam. Some Good Samaritan auto drivers often regulatethe traffic to ease it for the motorists and pedestrians. Prob-ably, some one-way regulations or other such solution canmitigate the long standing problem. Traffic managementexperts among Mambalam Times readers can surely come upwith innovative and effective suggestions for a long-termsolution.

Nevertheless, in a system where predominantly might isright and traffic violations and road rage are a way of life, thekey to the success of any proposal will be strict supervision bythe law makers, especially in the initial stages of implementa-tion. P. K. Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, GandhiStreet , T. Nagar

Don’t submit Aadhaar / PAN copy with Aavinsmart card application

Sir, Tamilnadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd(Aavin) is now seeking applications from consumers to issuesmart cards. Apart from details like name, address, date ofbirth, mobile number and milk booth number, the applicationalso seeks the consumer’s Aadhaar number. Besides this, theconsumer also needs to submit a copy of ID and address proofwith the application. When I questioned the official of the T.Nagar Zone as to why they want the Aadhaar number in thelight of the Supreme Court Order, he stated that it is only aroutine affair and the consumer is at liberty to either provideor ignore the same. I advise the readers of Mambalam Timeswho will be submitting the applications to refrain from provid-ing the Aadhaar number or PAN card copy. Instead they cansubmit a copy of ration card or voter ID for the same. V. S.Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Correct anomaly in property tax revisionSir, The anomaly in the revision of property tax has been

brought out by many residents and it is glaring. It there is clarity in the basis of revision and only a certain

percentage is imposed uniformly, the owners themselves cancalculate and pay.

This would avoid discrimination, dispute and petitions. The Corporation should take strong measures to collect

arrears running to crores from defaulters instead of penalizinghonest owners.

Though water tax is collected from all, in many areas thereis no water supply, and residents are forced to buy water. Inthese circumstances, there is no justification in revising prop-erty tax by more than 50%. N. Rajagopalan, West Mambalam

Appeal to clean toilets in Natesan ParkSir, Natesan Park, T. Nagar was renovated recently. It is a popular destination for many (especially senior citi-

zens) in the morning and evening. However the toilets are not being maintained properly, and

there is overgrowth of grass, which needs mowing.I appeal to Corporation officials to do the needful. V. S.

Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar.

1656 km. of smart roads by 2023 in TamilnaduBy Our Staff Reporter

Under a project titled ‘Smart Complete Street Project’, the Tamil Nadu government hasplanned to make 1,656 km. of roads in various cities across the state, including Chennai,‘smarter’ by using funds from foreign agencies like Asian Development Bank (ADB) at anestimated cost of Rs. 20,000 crores.

“At present, 25 km. of roads have been taken up under Smart City Project in T. Nagar, forwhich funds and designs for 19 km. have been sanctioned,” said M. Govinda Rao (DeputyCommissioner, Works, Chennai Corporation). Rural and Municipal Administration MinisterS. P. Velumani, on Dec. 21, said that various agencies such as World Bank, KFW and JapanInternational Co-operation Agency (JICA) would be approached for funds and the Centre andstate government were also likely to pitch in.

Smart complete streets are street layouts that cater to all user groups regardless of theirage, gender, ability or mode of transport. They are designed with wide and continuous footpaths, safe pedestrian crossings, separate cycle tracks (wherever applicable), bus stops designed toenhance convenience, designated on-street parking, organised street vending, and properlyscaled carriageways. They will also offer places for relaxation to play and interact. Oneimportant component of these streets is the ducting and storm water drains.

Once the project is executed, the life of a road, which is now up to three years, would go upby 30 years, said G. Prakash (IAS), Commissioner of Municipal Administration. “These roadsreduce accidents and traffic jams, and ensure safe school junctions and greener spaces,”Prakash added.

In Chennai, 45 km. of road length may be taken up under the project but the areas will befinalised only after the Smart City Project is finished.

The cost of setting up 1 km. of smart road is between Rs. 2 crores and Rs. 10 crores basedon the amenities to be provided.

The projects, once funded, will kick start in 2019 as detailed project reports are being preparedby consultants. Construction will begin in 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2023.
