Dear Family,

A blessed Lent to you and yours. I pray for you, dear flock, that this be a time of organic growth in holiness, virtue and above all in love.
At our parish, we will be focusing on our own path to holiness by the threefold pathways of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Aside from
being noble and ancient practices of our tradition, these three exercises are commended to us by the Lord Himself as ways to strengthen
our relationship with each other and ultimately with God, the Father. I will be highlighting aspects and sharing insight into these practic-
es as we go through Lent to better help you and those you love to experience them anew and with renewed vigor.

As it turns out, we jump right into discussing these practices as we join Our Lord in the desert during this first Sunday of Lent. Jesus
undergoes his famous battle with the Evil One on the Mount of Temptation near Jericho. In Her wisdom, the Church chooses this symbol
and reading of Christ in the Desert as we begin Lent to give us the perfect example on how we live it well after His example. Satan seeks
to lure Jesus as he does to us with similar types of temptations: appeals to appetites, ego, and a sense of control. Jesus, however, remains
committed to His Father through the whole ordeal. A lot of His ability to stay true comes from fasting and prayer, some of which we get
glimpses of in the story. We get the sense that Jesus has such a strong connection to His Father that nothing else can ever compete in its
appeal and fulfillment. But this was only possible as He has already established a strong connection of faithfulness and love with the
Father, a connection that would be impossible without selfrestraint and authentic communication. How is your relationship with God?
Can it withstand temptation and trouble? Are we sometimes so wrapped up in our selves or other priorities that we fail to make time for
God? Now is time for a change as we follow Jesus into the desert armed with prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Let us make this a deep and
powerful lent.
