Dear Friends of St George’s,

August means distinguished, respected, eminent, venerable, hallowed, illustrious, prestigious, exalted….well you get the picture. If you were born in this month, here are a few adjectives you can use to describe the wonder of being born in a month with such meaning. If you take it a step further, the birth flower associated with August is the gladiolus meaning beauty and strength of character. The month is also linked with marriage and family. Considering it is a time when many families take a holiday and spend a lot more time together, one can see how the link might have been made.

Did you know it is also National Smile Week between 5th and 11th August? No doubt an American idea, after all it is also National Raspberry Cream Pie Day on 1st August and International Beer Day on the 2nd August! Still a week focusing on smiling? Seems like a good idea, but do we need a highlighted week to do something we should all do every day or at the very least every week? When we smile, we make others smile and does that not lift the spirit? Some people have the ability to make others smile and be happy, while others can dampen a mood with their grumpiness and downcast view of the world. Are you a half glass full or half glass empty sort of person? In truth we probably move between the two at different points in our life, after all even those with the happiest of dispositions have difficult periods in their lives. However, when you face the everyday normality of life, remember to face it with a smile, because as the song goes ‘When you’re smiling (the whole world smiles with you)’. Did you know, you use more muscles smiling than when you frown? Go on, give all those muscles a workout. Smile at everybody you meet, even if it is only in National Smile Week, they will wonder what you have been up to!

or those of you going away this month, have a lovely time and don’t forget to send a postcard. Remember though, as Father Jenkins used to remind us every year, God doesn’t take a break from us, so keep praying.

Best Wishes.

Carolyn and Beverley Church Wardens

Future Events

Archdeacon Elizabeth will be taking the morning service on Sunday 4th August at 10.30am. Please come along and support this service to show her that we are still keeping going and are supporting our Church during the vacancy. We would like as many people as possible to come to this service and stay for coffee afterwards.Bar-B-Q:- A Bar-B-Q is planned for Sunday September 1st after the Morning Service and will be a social event to start off the new school year. We hope to invite the Heads of the Local Schools, Archdeacon Elizabeth, the Rural Dean- Paul Hamilton and others that have helped us during the vacancy. Please put this date in your diary and come along. Tickets will be £5 per head to cover sausages, burgers etc.- children can eat free. Donations of salads and desserts will be very welcome. The event will take place in the Church hall. Please pass the word along and

invite others and help us to energise the start of the Autumn season.Harvest Festival is on Sunday October 6th- there will be a Harvest Buffet Lunch in the hall after the service and donations of meats, salads, desserts, cakes etc. will be gratefully received on the day. Details of suggested Harvest donations will be available nearer the time, we usually collect tins and packets for the Food Bank and Homestart. Please put this date in your diary.

The Study Group will now meet on Thursday evenings in late September / October. The subject for study is “How do we make time in a busy world?” All are welcome to attend and details will be publicised nearer the time. If you can’t make all of the sessions , don’t worry they stand alone.

The next P.C.C meeting is on Monday 9th September at 8pm Other NewsVolunteers Needed to help count money in pairs after the service for 10 minutes, on a rota. Training will be provided and help available. Also is anyone willing to help Grahame as a server during the service. Grahame will explain all that is needed, but we do

Page 8:   · Web viewPARISH CHURCH of St GEORGE THE MARTYR. Vicar.During vacancy See website for information: Web Site:

need more people who could help on a rota. This could be once a month times to suit.

More Sunday School Teachers are needed. Could you help at Sunday School once a month?

We would like to re-vitalise the Sunday School and increase the number of children coming. The Sunday School needs new energy and enthusiasm and maybe even new materials. If we could get a small group of enthusiastic volunteers together we could give this a new push.

Naa is unable to continue her leadership from October so we need new arrangements. Many thanks go to Naa for all her hard work with the Sunday School and the plays during the Church Services. We have enjoyed these.

Porch News- the fund stands at £115,916.We are awaiting the verdict for two grant applications and we should know whether we have been successful by 3rd September. If we are not successful we will try further applications. If we are successful we are able to start building when we have £160,000 and we hope to start in the New Year. Please keep this in your prayers.

Roof Repairs:- The architect is due to inspect the roof on 24th July. Ray has three quotes for the roof work, ranging from £3000 to £8000. The work will go ahead as we have money in the restricted fabric account that we can use. Any fund-raising will help top up this fund. The roof appeal stands at £245 at present. Please keep saving your change and tweeting this. The fabric fund stands at £7422. The electrical work will cost between £750 and £1000 so again this can go ahead. Any donations to the just giving page are gratefully received. Go to our website www.stgeorgeschurchbrentwood.org where there is an easy link.

QR code- we also now have a QR code which links to this appeal if you prefer to donate by mobile phone.

Thanks to Clare Emery for organising this.

Contactless payments can now be made in Church, which go straight into the general fund,if you would like to pay your collection by this method. The machine will be at

the back of the Church. It works best in the hall where there is better reception. Again, all donations are gratefully received.

Our facebook page is now active- please see the church website www.stgeorgesbrentwood.com for access.

Would You like To learn More About the Christian Life? Each year, Chelmsford Diocese runs the Course in Christian Studies (CCS), starting in September.

Page 12:   · Web viewPARISH CHURCH of St GEORGE THE MARTYR. Vicar.During vacancy See website for information: Web Site:

The course is designed to give participants an in-depth introduction to studying the Bible and its History and develop ways of using the lessons from the Bible in everyday life. It starts with a study of how to read the Bible, going on to study the old Testament, the new Testament, letters of Paul and the personal meaning of Faith during the first year.

The course takes place one evening or morning per week over two years, there is a small cost for administration and books. Group sizes are fairly small up to 12 and the group works with two experienced tutors. During the two years, close bonds are formed with the other group members and members support each other in their prayer life and studies.

For those wishing to go on to further study ( e.g lay preacher, lay evangelist, pastoral assistant, ordination) this course gives an ideal foundation, but you do not need to study further if you do not wish to and the course can be a stand-alone unit to develop your Faith further.

The course is very interesting and worthwhile and gives an opportunity to explore any issues of Faith and Theology that you have always wanted to ask about.

Local centres are Brentwood , and Chelmsford but there are other centres on different days. Topics are broken into 5 week sessions, mainly during term time. There is a leaflet with more details available.

There is also an online- course.

AUGUST MAGAZINE FUNDRAISING

Last month was a quiet one for fundraising as will August too as everyone is on their holidays! We do however have our jumble sale on 1st August.   Any jumble you have can be brought to the church in readiness for this sale or a future one.

Our Summer quiz sheets are on sale from the church wardens. If you can’t get to church then please do contact me and I ll happily post one to you.  They are £1 each and ask you to solve anagrams of towns in England. Completed sheets need to be with me by 30th September, so you have a while to complete them!  1st Pilgrims Hatch Brownies have kindly donated the prizes for this.

We also have a new initiative to raise some funds.  Please donate your empty ink cartridges to us at St George’s.  We can recycle them and earn some money for the church.  Boxes are placed at the back of the church and in the hall -  just pop your cartridges in the box and we will do the rest!

Don’t forget we are serving cream teas on 15th September (2-4pm) as part of the heritage weekend.  Please do come along with family and friends and enjoy a cream tea.

P.C.C. Meeting Held Monday 8th July 2019

We were advised by the Archdeacon that our safeguarding policy has to be reviewed. We must ensure that safeguarding arrangements are clearly visible on the front page of the Parish Website. Jan Banning is our safeguarding Officer. It is useful to have a Facebook Account, we will check with Mick Grimes who used to deal with this. Clare Emery is willing to update it.

There is nothing to report regarding the vacancy. The Churchwardens are getting the Parish profile ready.

We received £10,000 grant from Garfield Weston for the porch. An application has gone to Veolia for £75,000 also Lesley has applied to National Churches Trust for £25,000.

Basic work needs to be done on the roofs i.e - asphalt and solar reflective paint. Ray received 3 quotations. The PCC were all in favour of accepting the quote from R J Evans which was £3,180.00.

The Electrical inspection is due this year, Ray received 2 quotations, the PCC were all in favour of accepting the quote from Mercury Electricals which was £792.00.

The Quinquennial inspection will take place on Wednesday 24th July. The architect hopes to arrive about 9-30am. Clive and Steve Smith will help with the ladders.

The Summer Fayre went well although most of the events had to be held in the hall owing to very windy weather. The inflatables did not turn up although Clive had paid a deposit however, we received £50.00 compensation from the company.

Nicola Parry is preparing a fund raising quiz sheet cost £1.00 and the finishing date will be on Heritage weekend 15th September. The next Jumble Sale is on Thursday 1st August at 11am. A box will be put at the back of the church for used printer cartridges to be put in for re-cycling.

Page 15:   · Web viewPARISH CHURCH of St GEORGE THE MARTYR. Vicar.During vacancy See website for information: Web Site:

The usual standard treasurer’s report was circulated, our finances are poor. £500 plus has been paid this month for the parish share. So far we have paid 72% of the parish share this year, we are £6,000 short. Planned giving is down and we have lost some standing orders. People are starting to use the contactless machine. £245 has been donated for the roof fund appeal.

Work will be done on the cupboards at the north end of the hall to fit new plasterboards and insulation in an effort to prevent dampness caused by condensation.

Lesley has prepared a poster to be put up on the notice boards regarding the Roof Fund Appeal.

Articles are needed for the magazine so that we are not always mentioning finances.

The Church B.B.Q will be held on Sunday 1st September after the morning service. Tickets will cost £5.

Mrs Naa-Anyima Boateng is leaving the Sunday School in November, we will have to advertise for a new leader. Children are required to be in church for Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 6th October. The Nativity play will be held on Sunday 22nd December.

The journey of life over the years.

I've learned that I like my teacher because she cries when we sing "Silent Night." Age 5    I've learned that our dog doesn't want to eat my broccoli either. Age 7I've learned that when I wave to people in the country, they stop what they are doing and wave back. Age 9

Page 16:   · Web viewPARISH CHURCH of St GEORGE THE MARTYR. Vicar.During vacancy See website for information: Web Site:

I've learned that just when I get my room the way I like it, Mom makes me clean it up again. Age 12    I've learned that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try cheering someone else up. Age 14    I've learned that although it's hard to admit it, I'm secretly glad my parents are strict with me. Age 15  I've learned that silent company is often more healing than words of advice. Age 24  I've learned that brushing my child's hair is one of life's great pleasures. Age 26  I've learned that wherever I go, the world's worst drivers have followed me there. Age 29  I've learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one will believe it. Age 30    I've learned that there are people who love you dearly but just don't know how to show it. Age 42   I've learned that you can make someone's day by simply sending them a little note. Age 44  I've learned that the greater a person's sense of guilt, the greater his or her need to cast blame on others. Age 46  I've learned that children and grandparents are natural allies. Age 47    I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on and it will be better tomorrow. Age 48

I've learned that singing "Amazing Grace" can lift my spirits for hours. Age 49    I've learned that motel mattresses are better on the side away from the phone. Age 50  I've learned that you can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. Age 51  I've learned that keeping a vegetable garden is worth a medicine cabinet full of pills. Age 52   I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you miss them terribly after they die. Age 53  I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. Age 58  I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. Age 62

Page 17:   · Web viewPARISH CHURCH of St GEORGE THE MARTYR. Vicar.During vacancy See website for information: Web Site:

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back. Age 64  I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. Age 65I've learned that whenever I decide something with kindness, I usually make the right decision. Age 66    I've learned that everyone can use a prayer. Age 72  I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. Age 74    I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch - holding hands, a warm hug,  or just a friendly pat on the back.  Age 76  I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. Age 78

I’ve learned that life is what you make it, and your life is much better when you make someone happy. Age 80+   *****

I've learned that you should pass this on to someone you care about. Sometimes they just need a little something to make them smile.    If things really do get better with age I am approaching excellent.
