ANC Veteran’s league
In 2009 Rhoo art centre launched a new programme called Ekurhuleni art devel-opment programme for visual art. This programme was in-troduce by Pat Magidikele the mission was to develop young and adult on visual art classes. Every Wednesday classes are held from 2:30 till 4:30 by Xolani Guxton Ngwenya a well known art-ist around Ekurhuleni dis-trict. Xolani discovered his talent at an age of 10years; he has worked with many artists and participated in many exhibitions such as the WOMAD festival in Benoni, a tribute to Thami Myele (Group Exhibition), Heritage Day at John Parable Hall in Benoni (Group Exhibition) and Springs Art Gallery. His work was also showcased in the soul for Africa a collec-tion of artworks from many international artists published by Development Bank of South Africa in 2008; in 2009 at Bell Dewar in Sandton his work was also exhibited. He grew up to be an ambi-tious artist who relishes every

Older people of Etwatwa Section are doing it for them-selves, gone are those days whereby our grandparents would sit at home and wait for their passing time on earth. Since October the 20th last year, the veterans of our glorious movement ANC (African National Congress) formulated a discussion meeting every Tuesday for older people who were part of the struggle. Their mem-bers come in wheelchairs and walking sticks but they are still able to strive and go to the Harry Gwala Secondary School in Emaphupeni for the meeting. These old comrades are combined together in dis-cussion of their challenges as
older people, and they try to assist one another where they can. The league has solved problems like providing iden-tity documents and birth cer-tificates for those who don’t have. They collect old clothes and donate them to poor families among them. The veteran’s league address is-sues like grant money, safety tips on how older should pro-tect themselves especially to those who are staying alone because it’s not safe. The ANC veteran’s league is led by George Hlophe, 62, who is the Chairperson of the league, Samuel Dhlamini who is the member of the secretary com-mittee. Goodman November who is the member of the committee said “I am proud tobe part of the veteran’s league because each one of us plays a key role as the reservoir of knowledge, because I was also in the struggle so there’s a lot to share”. The league has even gone to parliament to talk to the premier of Gau-teng Nomvula Mokonyane addressing their needs that they need a cultural village and old age home in Etwatwa. Their aims is to see every old person of the Etwatwa sec-tion making something out of their lives, regardless of the age they should stop feeling neglected and lonely. Projects like these are there to cater for their needs and give at-tention and love older people.

Freddie created a solo dance piece called Unnatural Pres-ence which talked about his life. The piece was choreo-graphed in Europe Denmark (Copenhagen) which was a break through him. The piece was well received by Europe-ans who saw Zwane’s work as hardcore South African culture and a primal, sculp-tured rite of primal passage by Contemporary African in search of his physical and spiritual identity. Zwane has been invited by the Grahams town National Arts Festival

He attends Workshops with the Alvin Ai-ley American dance company, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Tumbuka Dance Theatre from Zimbabwe. He has worked extensively With Casa Da Caltura Do Alto Mae in Ma-puto (Mozambique) Fred-die has two Areas which are of particular interest to him traditional Southern African
Dance and Japanese Butoh. He has extensively with Boaz and Anika Barkan two Bu-toh exponents and recently came back from Denmark where he performed with Boaz Barkan in Copenhagen. Freddie Joined Sibikwa Arts Centre at an early Age and since then he never looked back but proceeded with his dancing Career. I write this letter to Vutha news because I have this great concern about old building shops at Daveyton square. I am so concerned in a way that I don’t even buy fatkoek (amang-winya) there because it’s not hygienic, those buildings are no longer in a good standard of selling food they need to be renovated. I just wonder if health inspectors go and check those shops. There are also shops there that are having problems with their sewage system, most of the time it is blocked and runs out into the street and into residential areas. Chinese and Bangladesh business men are taking over and they are not keeping those buildings in good condition. My question is who is in charge now? Because most of the owner’s passed away and to tell you the truth, Daveyton square shops are not in good condition and they should be renovated.

The centres daily activity is to help young people discover his/her talent that he/she may be able to pursue. The centre chose young people because they see them as a vehicle for any development because they are still active and have big dreams that needs to be fulfilled. Sicelo says the chal-lenges that they have faced as a centre is crime because there has been more than 2 break-ins so they have implemented tight security. The achieve-ment that they achieved so far is that the club house have managed to send young peo-ple to United States of Ameri-ca for team summit, were they groom these individuals in becoming champions of their own lives. Nico Sibanyoni is a volunteer at the Tshep-oThembamulti purpose cen-tre he said “I am proud of be-ing part of this centre because at least I am doing something effective that will change someone’s else’s life.” Young people are motivated to come to this youth develop-ment programme so they will take part in something that will change their lives;so all they need to do is to change their attitude towards life.
It has been said that “one hand washes the other” which means if you help someone else the favour will be returned to you. The Tshepo Themba multi purpose resource cen-tre has demonstrated that in the lives of young people who are living in Etwatwa section. The Tshepo Themba multi purpose resource cen-tre was established by Rev. Dan Thabethe in 1997, back then it was called Tshepo Themba Institute. The aim was to group young people to do after school programmes like homework’s covering subjects like maths and Eng-lish. The centre grew to be-come a club house for young people involving activities like drama and career guides education information. An organisation called SAAYC (Southern African associa-tion of youth clubs) discov-ered that their aim and objec-tions were in line with what Tshepo Themba was doing. The centre implemented new programmes like computer
training classes, youth clubs, faith based clubs and school

Illegal dumping, who is responsible?

Daveyton and Etwatwa resi-dents are facing the biggest challenge of illegal dump-ing; today we have dead rats on our tar roads because of people who dump illegally on different sites. New born babies and rapes victims are discovered in such place. Keeping our country clean was our biggest dream to see change and enjoy a govern-ment has done so much for
this country; we have street lights and refuse removal programmes from Ekurhu-leni Metropolitan Munici-pality that we keep in our household. Illegal dumping is a human health threat; it is unhealthy for us and the envi-ronment. A variety of health hazards are associated with illegal dumping including: cancer, encephalitis, hepati-tis, diseases carried by birds, mosquitoes, and rodents. Our government utilized such
open fields at some point but the community members misuse the property and turn the place into a dumping site. Now the question is who is responsible for illegal dump-ing? Vutha news spoke with Daveyton and Etwatwa resi-dents. Tiyani Mathebula: “we are responsible; it is my duty and right as a South African Citizen to report such pro-tractors because it’s a serious issue and a small proportion that can be fixed with money,
if only the government can maintain those sites by build-ing parks or sports field. To-day we have rats all over the streets and we can’t control them anymore. We have to organise campaigns’ to clean our community, we are all re-sponsible for illegal dumping. If you don’t dump but you keep quite when you see your neighbour dumping illegally, you are also responsible for all the Rats we have in our township”. Kwanele Kwan-da: “most of the perpetrators are not from this area, people come from Mashanganeni to Maxhoseni section so in that way it’s not easy to recall such people. The Ekurhu-leni Municipality has made a change here in ward 25, we have our mini park, but we are still facing the biggest challenge of illegal dumping in our community. Yende Street is one of the most well known dumping sites. Last month a student was robbed after school and business owners are not safe because of this open field at Yende, putting a fence right round will be a solution because we have a park, what more do we need”. Mzwamandla Solani: “we can fight these perpetra-tors by bringing back those old big bins. Everybody is affected whether we like it or not. Rats are everywhere be-cause of this issue they must be convicted of this if it’s a crime”. Gov-ernment is responsible, yes I can report but I don’t know the by-laws of illegal dump-ing. Cynthia Delisile Zwane: “it’s my responsibility to re-port illegal dumpers because dumping rubbish everywhere, it’s not good for our health here at Barcelona. Children use those sites for sports ac-tivities but we can’t allow them to go and play on those sites anymore because it’s not hygienic. In other countries dumping illegally is an of-fence under the litter act, last month the municipal tight-ened the law on legal dump-ing on their launch. Siphethu primary school an-nual sport day this prestigious event took place at Daveyton from 7am till 3pm. Extra School Support Programme members Mr Swelankomo (Sport Coordinator) Mr Xo-lani Goba (Sports Arts & Culture) Miss Linda Khu-malo (General supervisor) felt the need to organise this event and invite community members and leaders to join them on this ‘’fun run & fun walk 5km’’, the event was sponsored by local1 compa-nies Daveyton Pick ‘n Pay, Love corner, Coca-Cola, Naledi Bakery, Elangeni Cash Carry, HM Butchery, Mndupuna Tavern, Standard Bank, Sun bake, Ekurhuleni Metro Police, paramedics
and Daveyton SAPS. Davey-ton Mall Marketing Manager Miss Audrey Nkunzi said “I am so happy to be here as we have sponsored this event with jumping castle, and give away toys to the kids at a value of R1500, but the most important thing is I am so excited to donate and sponsor this event and to avail myself” community leader CLR Rita Dladla from ward 96 was also supporting this fun run day. The school principal Mrs J Ramodike thanked everybody that man-aged to attend this event. 300
participants attended this event at Siphethu primary school, runners starting line was from Siphethu to Sinaba from Sinaba back to Siphet-hu 5km fun walk and run. This fun run was divided into two divisions senior and junior. Here are the winners from senior division Shaun Talane no:091 (1st), Nkosi-yomusa Talane no:083(2nd) and Lawrence Mabuyangwe no:123(3nd) junior division Sizwe Ntuli (1st), Khule-kani Mngomezulu (2nd) and Thabiso Mofokeng (3nd).
Twenty three local teams from Etwatwa and Daveyton affiliated for this tournament. This tournament was divided into two division senior and junior level, as for junior level tournament wins were Liverpool playing against Tika-Tika Football Club and the leading goal scorer was Sibongakonke Nkisimane for the entire 2012 Easter tour-nament.
