The All Share Price Index edged up 34.7 points to close at 6,467.3 (+0.5%),

whilst the more liquid S&P SL 20 Index also head north to close at 3,608.4

(+0.9%). The total turnover was LKR1,513.7 mn (USD11,617.0k) vs. 12-month

average daily turnover of LKR842.7 mn (USD6,467.4k) whilst the volume

traded for the day was 105,835.7k against the 12-month average daily volume

of 41,884.2k. Net inflow of foreign funds was seen during the day, where

foreign purchases amounted to LKR344.7 mn (USD2,645.4k), whilst foreign

sales amounted to LKR78.8 mn (USD604.7k).Top traded counters were Hatton

National Bank LKR228.7 mn (USD1,755.2k, +1.8%), John Keells Holdings

LKR170.7 mn (USD1,310.1k, -1.4%), Asiri Hospital Holdings LKR159.7 mn

(USD1,225.6k, 0.0%), Commercial Bank of Ceylon LKR117.5 mn

(USD901.7k, +3.4%) and Access engineering LKR113.4 mn (USD870.3k, -

0.8%).

Colombo bourse continued its bull run where the turnover exceeded the LKR1

bn mark for the third consecutive day on the back of strong institutional interest.

Banking counter Hatton National Bank topped the revenue generation with a

c.15% contribution to the aggregate daily turnover coupled with a block trade of

1.1 mn shares. The stock enticed foreign and local institutional investor appetite

with renewed 52 week high of LKR162.0 before wrapping the day with a price

appreciation of 1.8%. Moreover foreign and local institutional investor interest

continued to accumulate in Commercial Bank of Ceylon and Access

engineering with crossings of 308k and 1.3 mn shares respectively during the

day. Meanwhile John Keells Holdings saw local institutional participation

together with an off floor trade of 447.4k shares whilst renewed local institutional

investor activity was centered upon Asiri Hospital Holdings with a crossing of

5.0 mn shares during the day.

Commercial Bank (Non-Voting), NTB, NDB and Sampath also renewed their

52 week high during the day whilst hefty trading activities were seen in petite

counters The Finance, PC Pharma and PCH Holdings. Meanwhile George

Steuart Finance reported a near 22.5% price gain to close the day at

LKR47.40. Further, notable foreign buying was seen in CIC Holdings coupled

with a crossing of 850k shares during the day.

Today’s Feature – Economic Update

Tourist arrivals up 14% YoY in June 2014…

The month of June saw tourist arrivals to the country growing at 14%

YoY to 103,175 whilst June 2013 saw a growth of 38% YoY. Meanwhile

YTD tourist arrivals for 2014 recorded 727,353 denoting a growth of

near 25% YoY. Arrivals growth for the month of June was primarily led

by India and China recording 30.2% YoY and 125.1% YoY respectively

while South Asian and East Asian regions grew 13.3% YoY and 42.9%

YoY respectively. Further the Western European region remained a

lead contributor with 8.9% YoY growth for the month.

On a YTD basis, the top generating region, Western Europe which has

been the traditional market saw 17% YoY growth while Eastern Europe,

South Asia and East Asia grew 44.8% YoY, 18.3% YoY, 50.3% YoY

respectively. Notably arrivals from China recorded a YTD growth of

137.2% YoY to 52,230 cf. YTD arrivals from U.K which grew 7.7% YoY

to 66,123.

Sri Lanka’s economic landscape to further improve…

Sri Lanka’s economic landscape improved with a GDP growth of 7.6% (1Q2014), fiscal deficit at 3.5% of GDP as at YTD,

mid-single digit inflation level and narrowing trade deficit (c.12% YoY during the first four months of 2014).

Further the recent country update by credit rating agency Moody assigning a stable outlook for the Sri Lankan banking

system justifies confidence placed by foreign fraternity on the overall economic activity in the country. The rating agency

was seen bullish on the banking sector with a non-excessive loan growth of c.14% in a lower interest rate environment and

soothing out non-performing loans (NPL’s). This comes after our in depth banking sector analysis which we expect banking

industry remains positive on the sustainability of low interest rates and credit growth of c.15% in 2014. Further we believed

the healthy GDP growth, improving fiscal discipline (from 9.9%-5.8% in 2010-2013), narrowing trade deficit and continuous

BOP surplus backed by improving foreign remittances would drive the economy to grow by 7.8% in 2014 and hence would

assist to boost the banking industry.

Meanwhile the rating agency’s grade on the banking outlook is in line with its country rating of B1 stable outlook which is

backed by an expected GDP growth rate of c.7% in 2014. The loan growth is to accommodate the booming infrastructure

projects in the economy whilst NPL’s are expected to come down and improve the asset quality by tightened lending

standards from the latter part of 2014 fiscal year. This is in consistent to our expectations where we also predicts gross

NPL’s to be stable though short term volatility may occur given the impact on gold lending. However we believe the loan

growth outlook remains buoyant whilst we are positive the floor for industry NIM’s would be c.4%.
