The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Reflections

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Risen Lord, We are at the Third Sunday of Easter. In her wisdom, the Church gives us FIFTY days to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. Why? Certain-ly we have this many days because it is at the center of who we are; and because it is the highpoint of our liturgical year. I would say we have this many days so that we can soak in or better-grasp what this is about. Every year we approach our Holy Days differently because we are different than the previous year(s). As we look at the Gospel today, and yet another story of Jesus’ ap-pearance, we hear a few important things. First, Jesus begins with the phrase, “Peace be with you!” As with the appearance to the disciples in the upper room and to Thomas, his greeting is one of peace. What does that mean for you in your life right now? Where is there a need for peace? What is the peace that Jesus offers you? The second thing the Risen Lord says is, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?” It reminds me of another phrase that occurs over and over again in the scripture, especially Luke’s Gospel, “Be not afraid.” In this new era – the era of Resurrec-tion and new chapter for the early Church, there is cause for rejoicing. And even to this day we need to be reminded that God “has our backs.” So we must not be afraid or troubled. We need to continue to be an Alleluia People, and celebrate this Holy Time. Finally the passage states, “Then he opened their minds to under-stand the Scriptures.” And it seems to me that if the closest of Jesus’ band needed time to reflect and digest what his death and resurrec-tion were about, why should we be different, especially since we did not physically experience him? I truly believe that no matter our age, there is room for us to grow – in our understanding of Jesus, in our closeness to the Lord, in the ways that we give witness to our faith. Alleluia! He is Risen, as he said!

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

For the last few weeks I described the begin-nings of our religious education program. Like all things that begin with an empty slate, there was much to be accom-plished: location was found; staff hired; cate-chists trained and com-mitted; parents consult-ed. The program began in the fall of 1991. I be-lieve there were around 300 children in that first year. The beginning of Cardi-nal Bernardin School and our Religious Edu-cation program demand-ed great effort on the part of many. The estab-lishment of the infra-structure: - funding, con-struction, building, or-ganizational develop-ment required time and energy; a strong founda-tion is critical. Without such structures, the task of education would be next to impos-sible. The point I want to make is this: while these building efforts are im-portant, they are only a means to a much more important end. That end is bringing children into a life of faith in the Cath-olic community.

From my perspective, achieving this end re-quires three necessary and connected ele-ments. 1. Parents: The church teaches that parents are the chief educators of their children in faith. Parents fulfill this goal in a number of ways: by giving witness and liv-ing their faith; providing their children with in-struction into the faith, usually in a parish school or parish pro-gram. Fulfilling the re-sponsibility to see they receive the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and Eu-charist.

2. Participation: With their children, partici-pate regularly in the Sunday Eucharist. This weekly participation of faith, with the communi-ty, reminds us we are joined in a faith com-munity and connected to a larger church. And through that weekly community celebration, we are nourished by the Word of God and the reception of the Eucharist; we offer

praise and thanks to God.

3. Education and for-mation: the third aspect is to provide education not only in the home but by consistently sending them to the Catholic school or religious edu-cation program. This includes seeing to it that the children attend regu-larly and participate the programs for faith devel-opment sponsored by the parish.

Over the years the church in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe have experienced a decline in Sunday Mass Participa-tion. Studies have been done, articles and books written with many rea-sons being proposed for the decline and sugges-tions offered to change these trends, but to the best of my knowledge none of these sugges-tions has had a signifi-cant impact on the de-cline. As pastor I noticed that parents are very faithful to the specific demands at the time of sacramen-tal preparations. And in religious education the

Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are tak-en from the New Testa-ment--the Christian scrip-tures. Together they ex-plore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who ful-filled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today's selections refer to our human weakness,

yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in "Jesus Christ the righteous one" (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apos-tles Peter invites every-one to "repent, there-fore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away" (Acts

3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ "expiation for our sins" (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disci-ples with "Peace" and urges them to preach "repentance, for the for-giveness of sins" (Luke 24:47).

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2018 CANDIDATES AND CATECHUMENS! (CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK)

We are the Green Fami-ly. I am Jennifer, along with my children Raena who is 10 and Ryan who is 14. After the loss of the two most important men in my life, I knew I needed to renew my faith. Along with this I felt the need to introduce my children to church and God. Mary Kay Burberry was so welcoming to us and allowed us to join with the Cupich family for RCIA. We have had a great experience and felt so welcomed especially by Mary Kay, Father Ste-

ve and Sister Gael. Our day at Holy Name was beautiful. Thanks to my cousins John Gonczy and Nikki Rumpf for being our spon-sors. I would like to con-tinue with adult formation and Raena will contin-ue with Religious Education. We are happy we found SFA.

attendance is very strong. For some, the decline might be a faith concern, or a result of mistreat-ment by the church. What I hear most fre-quently is that they just “slide away” for no single reason. Life has

changed. In many fami-lies both parents work outside the house, which often means household tasks are left to the weekend. Sports teams and clubs use Sunday morning for practice and games. And the sense of obli-gation has given way to

“I do what is best for me.” This decline in mass attendance is more complicated than a few sentences. I wish I had a solution. St Francis was founded 28 years ago. 2046 will mark the next 28, who will be here?

Donate a New Stuffed Animal thru April 30 My name is Alex Worachek and I’m a Boy Scout of Troop 318 currently working on my Eagle Service Project. I will be supporting a non-profit organization called Comfort Fur Kids. Comfort Fur Kids provides new stuffed animals to children in the hospital that may be undergoing treatment or surgery. The organization was founded by Caley Trepac in 2013. She had gone through many surgeries and had found comfort holding onto a stuffed ani-mal. Her mission is to make a child's stay in a hospital just a little bit less scary. I'm supporting her mission by having a drive to collect new stuffed animals from April 7th through April 30th. The stuffed animals will be delivered to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. This project is important to me because I have personally seen the comfort these animals bring to children. My brother went through many surgeries as a baby and young boy and I saw how special these animals were to him. I want to provide that comfort to more children.

“A model of care has been developed specifically for families whose infant is likely to die before or after birth. Often called ‘perinatal hospice,’ it's a way of caring for both the baby and the baby's fam-ily before, as well as after, birth.”

Men and Women’s 2018 Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) Renewal Experiences What an incredible time! Several men and women of St. Francis recent-ly said “yes” to the invitation to attend the CRHP renewal experiences held at the St. Francis Religious Education Center. Every year, St. Fran-cis hosts two very special and life-changing renewal experiences for parishioners – one for men and another for women. During this 30-hour

renewal experience, participants accelerated their faith journey by deep-ening their relationship with Jesus Christ through scripture reflection, prayer, faith sharing, rosary, Mass and reconciliation. They also enjoyed some delicious food, laughter and tears together. The experience also sparked the creation of life-long Brothers and Sisters in Christ and spe-cial friendships that will last forever.
