Cosmos News received a tip-off from a reliable source that a case of defeating the end of justice has been opened against a senior detective at Standerton’s Detective Unit after 18 case dockets dating as far as 2012 to 2014 were recovered after it mysteriously disappeared from the system in July 2014. It is reported that the officer received the 18 dockets from the prosecutor at the Magistrate’s Court all with new court dates when the arrested suspects should return to court. Sources claim that investigation officers complained about the missing dockets to their superiors, but nobody paid attention or cared. In the meantime complainants were waiting for the outcome of the reported cases. It is alleged that when the officer was confronted by the branch commander, he admitted that he forgot the dockets at his home. A case of defeating the ends of justice was opened against the of- ficer on 26 March and handed over to Lieutenant-Colonel Mbokane of Secunda for investigation. The cases reportedly range from burglaries at residential and business premises, shoplifting, assault to inflict grievous bodily harm, common robbery, malicious damage to property, posses- sion of suspected stolen goods, the contravention of court orders and general theft. It is an agonising scenario for the complainants who want to see justice prevail, but a victory for the arrested suspects when cases against them were struck off the roll because of the missing dockets. This cross negligence is unfolding at the background of the com- munity who are up-in-arms, ever complaining of poor communication and lack of updates from the detectives about the cases. When Cosmos News went behind the scenes to investigate the matter, the 52-year-old police officer involved was still at work. Even though the branch commander has made an undertaking to improve the system to moni- tor the movement of the case dockets and he is embarking on damage control, the integrity of the detective unit is under the spotlight. It will evidently take a great deal to bring back the community’s confidence to his ailing unit. It is a pity that detectives who go out of their way to combat crime, have to share an office with a rotten apple. Cosmos News will follow this case closely as it is taken in a serious light. Justice delayed is justice deniedSTANDERTON -When law-abiding citizens report a case at the police station, they do it with full confidence that the Police will investigate and prepare the case for prosecution so that justice could take its course. However, some men and women in blue, who have been entrusted with the responsibility to bring perpetrators to justice, are the ones failing the community where they are entrusted to serve and protect.

The system warrants the officer to hand back the case dockets to the investigation officers for further investigation and it is alleged that the officer took home the dockets entrusted. For eight months, between July 2014 and March 2015, the dockets disappeared. Not even the branch commander of Standerton detective services detected the gross negli-gence. This raises a big question concerning the level of competence of the head of the detectives.

A case of defeating the ends of justice was opened against the of-ficer on 26 March and handed over to Lieutenant-Colonel Mbokane of Secunda for investigation. The cases reportedly range from burglaries at residential and business premises, shoplifting, assault to inflict grievous bodily harm, common robbery, malicious damage to property, posses-sion of suspected stolen goods, the contravention of court orders and general theft.

It is an agonising scenario for the complainants who want to see justice prevail, but a victory for the arrested suspects when cases against them were struck off the roll because of the missing dockets.

This cross negligence is unfolding at the background of the com-munity who are up-in-arms, ever complaining of poor communication and lack of updates from the detectives about the cases. When Cosmos

News went behind the scenes to investigate the matter, the 52-year-old police officer involved was still at work.

Even though the branch commander has made an undertaking to improve the system to moni-tor the movement of the case dockets and he is embarking on damage control, the integrity of the detective unit is under the spotlight. It will evidently take a great deal to bring back the community’s confidence to his ailing unit. It is a pity that detectives who go out of their way to combat crime, have to share an office with a rotten apple.

Cosmos News will follow this case closely as it is taken in a serious light. It is a case of justice delayed and justice denied. DM

NATIONAL – Mr Theunis Kotzé, the General Manager of ADT, warned members of the public to remain vigilant when they are at home during the day. “I would like to reiterate that criminals attack at any time.

“They don’t have to operate under the cover of darkness. Daytime incidents, especially during weekdays, are extremely common because this is when fewer people are around and it’s easier for criminals to move around undetected,” he said.ADT offers the following safety tips to protect yourself at home during the day:• Keep gates closed at all times• Keep security gates and doors locked at all times• Early detection systems like outside beams and CCTV are a valuable extra layer of security• Arm outdoor detection when you are at home

• Never allow strangers onto your property no matter what they say their business is• Vary your routine. Don’t put the bins out at exactly the same time every week or don’t leave for work at precisely the same time, taking the same route.• Carry remote panics with you at all times at home and equip your domestic staff with remote panic buttons• Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when leaving and arriving home• Report anything suspicious to your security provider or the SAPS immediately – go with your gut. If it seems out of place, it probably is – call it in.“We need to be smart when it comes to personal safety and should be forming simple daily security habits as part of a commitment to being responsible and vigilant. Personal safety needs to always be top of mind,” Kotzé concluded. JD

PROVINCIAL - The Mpumalanga Health Department has disposed of more than R1.6 million worth of expired medicine while there is a serious shortage of life saving drugs and basic medication at clinics around the province.

This information was revealed by MEC for Health, Gillion Mashego, as he admitted dur-ing a recent sitting that in the 2013/14 finan-cial year, the department disposed of more than R1.6 million worth of expired medicine.

Healthcare workers at various clinics in Mpumalanga face many challenges on a daily basis as the provincial health department fails them, while patients who frequent these clin-ics complain about the shortage of critical medicine, hygienic conditions, some clinics even without running water and /or electric-ity.

The shortages at clinics varies from blood pressure tablets, vaccinations, antibiotics, ARV’s, diabetic and warfarin just to mention a few. The MEC for Health promised that in the new financial year which started on the 1st of April 2015, a new system would be put in place where drugs are supplied and deliv-ered to all heath care facilities throughout the province more effectively, eliminating stock medicine and wastage. The MEC also stated that R24 million has been put aside in the new budget to employ more healthcare pro-fessionals such as medical and professional doctors.

The DA welcomed this announcement as it will alleviate long queues at many health care facilities. The DA will continue their over sight role of monitoring all clinics around the province, to establish whether the MEC’s

new system yields any relief for Heath care facilities. Should the situation persist, the DA will have no choice but to write to the Pub-lic Protector to launch an investigation into the critical shortage of life saving drugs and medication at all clinics around Mpumalanga. The department’s inability to manage its af-fairs and the continuous failure to correctly staff and stock these facilities has caused more grief to the many people who frequent these health care facilities.

It is our duty to hold the Executive to ac-count, especially where tax payer’s money is involved. More than 80 percent of resi-dents in our province depend on the public health system and the DA will leave no stone unturned until these facilities are properly staffed and correctly stocked. JD

SECUNDA - A traditional healer (40) was arrested after he apparently issued false sick notes to some of his patients. One of his patients reported that after a visit to the traditional healer, she was issued with a sick note. When she went through the note she saw that the note was not in the name of the healer, but from a local deceased doctor.

According to the police spokesperson, patients must verify any and all letters and documents they receive from a doctor or traditional healer, and if the traditional healer uses stolen or false documents, that healer cannot be trusted. JD

STANDERTON -When a construction truck full of workers arrived at Standerton police station on Thursday afternoon, 7 April, Lieu-tenant Johannes Nhlabathi remarked that: “Work-related disputes cannot be resolved by police.” He said this after about 30 workers came to the station to complain about their work-related matters.

Lieutenant Nhlabathi was surprised to learn that the workers came there to be paid their monthly wages by their employer. The truck off-loaded the workers at 14:00 and two men got into a car and drove off. The two men were going to the bank to withdraw cash to pay the workers and after about an hour, the men returned and pulled in next to the truck and the workers queued for their hard earned wages.

An undisclosed amount of cash was left on the seat of the truck as workers stood next to the window, one by one cashing up from their employers. Lieutenant Nhlabathi reprimanded the pay master about the risk of flashing cash in the public eye and furthermore warned them that that practice poses a dangerous situation not only to them but to the workers that will be leaving the place with cash on their person.

“This practice is unacceptable for the safety of your workers and for you,” he said and also told them that they regularly warn people not to carry cash around, but to use bank cards instead. The em-ployers conceded that it is a dangerous practice and that they will opt to pay workers via the bank from next month on. Lieutenant

JD

On October 2, 1954, First Lieutenant James O Conway was taking off from Boston Logan Airport, flying in a plane that carried a load of munitions.

When his plane became airborne, he suddenly lost power over Boston’s bay. In an instant, Conway faced a brutal choice – eject from the plane and save his own life, or crash the plane into the bay causing his own death. If he ejected, however, the plane would crash into an East Boston neighbourhood filled with homes and families.

Amazingly, Conway chose to crash the plane into the bay – giving his life for the lives of

others. In John 15:13, Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” The willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect others shows a heart that cares more about the needs of others than the needs of self. Someone once said that “the measure of love is what one is willing to give up for it.” God the Father loved so much that He gave up His Son. Christ loved so much that He gave up His life – even taking our sins on Himself and dying in our place. The measure of God’s love for you is great. Have you accepted his love personally? – Bill Crowder

In the garden He was kneeling down to prayThe hour so near – no more delay.Getsemané – the very last placeHis sweat like blood – running down His face.

He cried out “Father, if this is your willTo carry the cross – to pay the billThen not My will be done – but Yours aloneSoon I will be with You – in My heavenly home”.

His disciples – fast asleep – they could not hearThe feet of the soldiers – so very nearWith fierce force they came to take Him awayOh – so near – His very last day.

Before Pilate, Jesus was broughtHe is not guilty – so Pilate thought“Crucify Him – away with Him!”The crowd was screaming – all yelling!!

The guards came to take Him awayNo turning back – no delay. His body so bruised, bleeding and brokenFinal words over Him was spoken.

A crown of thorns they placed on His headBlood running down His face – covered it redHE was broken – so beaten upHe had no choice – but to drink this cup.

While He was stumbling down that roadHis cross so heavy – so heavy the loadNot just His cross He had to carry – but also our sinOur hearts – and all the evil within.

Down the Via Dolorosa HE stumbledGod’s only begotten Son – so shamefully humbledUp the hill to CalvaryTo pay the price – to set us free.

They nailed Him to that rugged crossMary – His mother – watching – oh, such a big lossHer heart was crying out to The OneThe only One, who could save her beloved Son.

When the cross finally stood up straightThe time was near – so very lateJesus spoke His final words – and cried out to GodOh, why have You forsaken Me – My Lord?

He descended down to hell, to get the keys‘cause He wasn’t the loser, the victory was HisGod’s Spirit rose Him from the graveOver all He was victorious – no more a slave.

Up in heaven – Jesus took His standBy His Father’s Throne – At God’s right handHe is the only door you can go throughTo the only true God – forever new.

It is about time that we the residents say enough and no more to the Lekwa Municipality. For 100 years we had a prosperous town and in the last 21 years we have watched as the town has been run into the ground, the Municipality have succeeded in watching the destruction of the River Park, Lapa and Restaurant, the swimming pools, the caravan park and Grootdraai Dam. Even the roads, water and sewerage infrastructure. We have to buy safe drinking water which is a huge extra expense every month. And the latest, the non-payment of Eskom which will finally be the thing that will totally destroy Standerton.

I don’t think the average person realises what impact the Eskom threat to limit electricity supply to the town will mean. The first thing that will go is jobs, it could be yours. Just the hours of the threatened cut off from 8-10 am is 25% of the 8 hour working day, that means 25% less income, businesses will be looking at ways to decrease expenses, first to go will be jobs.

Businesses that are at present making a marginal profit will be the next casualty as they will close down and again there will be job losses. Make no mistake this is not

an empty threat by Eskom, last week (what a lot of people do not know) is that Eskom took out a large advertisement in a national newspaper, they are not going to spend the amount this advertisement would have cost on empty threats.

The result of the proposed cuts week-days 6-10 am and 5-9 pm weekends 7-10 am and 5-8 pm will mean that in the middle of winter, when Standerton is at its coldest, people will be without a cooked breakfast and evening meal, no TV, no catching up on housework in the evenings for working mothers, no heating in our homes unless we buy a generator, gas heater or stove. How many of us can do this? There could be accidents due to non- working traffic lights. There could be deaths for people who rely on machines to survive. No computers to look up homework assignments, the list is endless.

If people don’t pay their electricity they must be cut off, no more pussy-footing around by the Municipality. It does not look as if our Municipality has any intention of paying Eskom as there is money for a mayoral guesthouse, money for jaunts to Loskop Dam, R10 million on an unused taxi rank that has been vandalised, but no money

to pay Eskom. We have a Municipal Spokesman who

refuses to speak, he must be fired as he is not doing the job he was employed to do, the money spent on the Loskop jaunt is money that came from the ratepayers. We have a right to know how much was wasted on this totally unnecessary event, the meeting could just as easily have been held in Standerton. I read in the paper the other day that Standerton Municipality is also one of the Municipalities that failed to spend the money allocated to them for service delivery. They are failing the residents at every turn.

Standerton is not going to attract new businesses to the town when they read all these bad reports in national newspapers. It really would be interesting to know if bonuses were paid to officials for good service as the service they give to the town is appalling. It’s a pity that a lot of the younger voters are too young to remember what a well-run town looked like.

There is a Council Meeting on Thursday 30 April at 2 pm, let’s go any see what they get up to at these meetings then we can hold them accountable.Very, very, fed up resident

NATIONAL - Muslim clerics in South Africa are being threatened for speaking out against the Islamic State terrorist organisation. One of those threatened is the principal of the Zakariyya Park madrassa, south of Johannesburg, one of the largest Muslim religious schools in South Africa. Shabbier Ahmed Saloojee recently received threatening calls after warning congregants about IS. Anonymous threats have also been made to other highly respected clerics across South Africa.

“It was an anonymous call,” said Saloojee. “The person, a coward, warned me to be careful, to watch my step and to stop what I am doing. “But I won’t. I won’t be a coward. I am not afraid of these faceless people and will continue to speak out. “I am not the only one to receive threats. There are a few Islamic clerics who have received these calls and messages, but none of us will be

stopped from speaking out,” Saloojee said.

“They see us as infidels. People who don’t deserve to live. There’s concern among the Islamic leadership that IS could be trying to extend its reach to South Africa, but if they do try something we don’t believe that they would survive for long, not like they have in Iraq and Syria.”

He said that within weeks of launching operations in Iraq, the militants had murdered the muftis [senior Islamic religious leaders] of Mosul, Kirkuk, Fallujah and Ramada, killing some as they preached. “For IS, the clerics are the number one target, their greatest adversaries because we are preaching that what they [IS] are doing is against Islam. They do not act in the name of Islam or any religion. No religion condones murder,” Saloojee said.

Ibrahim Bham of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa, a council

of Muslim theologians, said it condemned the threats. Bham said he did not have personal knowledge of the threats. “We must keep in mind that the Muslim community, though largely homogeneous, has people with different opinions, as in every community. But different views do not mean you can oppress others. “We are completely against IS and will not bow to pressure. We will continue to speak out against them. We are not afraid of threats. Why should we be?” Bham said.Professor Farid Esak, head of religious studies at the University of Johannesburg, said there was no significant support for IS among South African Muslims. “All the religious institutions, organisations and seminaries have unequivocally condemned IS.” Esak said he suspected the telephone threats were made by a few Muslims, “precisely to upset” the consensus against IS. PROVINCIAL - Less than half of the 2045 heads of cattle promised by the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture to farmers who lost cattle in the 2012 hail storms, has been delivered. Members of the Kwasimu Farmers Association in Thembisile Hani and Dr JS Moroka municipalities are now severely affected in their farming operations.

The department promised to compensate

the 366 members of the association with 2045 heads of cattle but have to date, only delivered 1000 calves. The department has also not informed the farmers how these calves are to be divided amongst the members of the association.

The DA will ask parliamentary questions to the MEC of Agriculture, Andries Gamede, about why the amount of cattle delivered

was significantly less the amount promised. They will also request the MEC for a detailed breakdown of the beneficiary list used to determine how the cattle will be distributed.

The longer the department delays compensating these farmers, the longer their families remain without their livelihoods. Last year, the DA marched in support of the emerging farmer’s plight and delivered a

memorandum to the Agriculture department. Some of our demands included the compensation for the farmer’s loss of their cattle.

Agriculture is one of the backbones upon which Mpumalanga’s economy is built, as such; emerging farmers must be better capacitated by the Mpumalanga government rather than being let down. JD

ERMELO - Hundreds of domestic workers from all mu-nicipalities in Gert Sibande District gathered at Mpumalanga Stadium in Wesselton Township in Ermelo on Saturday, 11 April. The deputy minister of the Department of Labour, Inkosi Phathekile Holomisa came to address the domestic workers their rights in the work place as entrenched by the constitution of the Republic of South Africa. It is no secret that domestic workers have been left out of the mainstream of workers for decades.

The primary purpose of the Deputy Minister’s imbizo was to highlight the plight of the women who have suffered the injustice and humiliation of unfair labour practices. In his keynote address, the deputy minister told hundreds of women that the new labour relation act guaranteed domestic work-ers full rights like any other worker in any other industry. He said the domestic workers are entitled to a minimum wage of R2 625 per month in all metropolitans across the country, R1 812 in small cities and towns in urban and rural areas alike. He described the harsh conditions most of the domestic work-ers are working under in their employer’s homes, He said: “our mothers look after the entire household, raise children, cook and clean. Some work long hours without compensa-tion and most of the domestic workers are working without a written contract and job description. They are subjected to un-fair labour practices and threatened with dismissal on a daily basis should they raise their voices to complain. The deputy minister advised the women to make use of the Inspection &

Enforcement Service provided by the Department of Labour. He emphasized the fact that worker’s rights are human rights. He further stated that domestic workers are entitled to annual paid leave and 4 months maternity leave. He furthermore urged domestic workers to report any unfair labour practice and non compliance to the minimum wage to the nearest de-partment of labour, in the event of unfair dismissal. The em-ployee has the fullest right to go to the CCMA office to lay a formal grievance against the employer. The deputy minister lambasted the employers who treat their domestic workers like objects and call them names. He urged all employers to respect the rights of domestic workers and treat them with dignity. After the keynote address, domestic workers were af-forded the opportunity to report and relate their challenges. It was shocking to find that most of the workers are still earn-ing R1 200 per month, no conditions of employment policies adhered to , some told horror stories of working long hours without pay, harsh working conditions, washing dogs and master’s cars, dismissed for being HIV positive, and some are still subjected to vulgar language and called names such as Aunties and servants. The Department of Labour with the Unions have vowed to deal harshly with the employers who do not adhere to basic conditions of employment for domes-tic workers. Messages of support by Social partners such as FEDUSA, NACTU, and COSATU were very appreciative to the department of labour initiative to address the plight of the domestic workers and farm workers who are still mar-

ginalised in the labour mainstream. Among the dignitaries who attended the occasion was MEC of Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms D Nhlengethwa, Chief Director of Depart-ment of Labour, Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality Cllr MP Nhlabathi, Mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality Cllr JS Bongwe and many more. NATIONAL - From 30 April 2015 it will be compulsory for infants and children to be in a child restraint whilst traveling inside a vehicle. This was published in the 22nd National Road Amendment on 31 October 2014. The date was set in a correction notice to the legislation a few days later.

For the purpose of Regulation 213, an adult is a person over the age of 14 years or taller than 1,5 metres and a child is a person between the ages of three years and 14 years, except where such a person is taller than 1,5 metres. An infant is a person below the age of three years. Any reference to a safety belt in these regulations will be con-strued as a reference to a seatbelt.

Motor vehicles that are required to be fitted with seat-belts in terms of the relevant requirements as contem-plated in Regulation 216 will be fitted with seatbelts in accordance therewith. In addition to the requirements, no person will be able to operate a minibus of which the gross vehicle mass exceeds 2 500 kg, unless seatbelts are fitted to the space on the front seat occupied by the driver and front-seat passenger.

No person will be able to operate a motor vehicle on a public road unless the seatbelts fitted to the vehicles are in good working order. According to the regulation, the seatbelts may only be removed for repair or replacement purposes, during which time the vehicle may not be used on a public road.

No person will be able to operate a ‘minibus’ or ‘midi-bus’ (first registered after 4 September 2006 and operating in terms of an operating license) unless seatbelts are fitted for each and every seat. The belt configuration for a seat in the rear of the vehicle must be a 2- or a 3-point belt with

anchorages in accordance with SANS 1430.As of 30 April 2015, no adult may occupy a seat in a mo-tor vehicle that is fitted with a seatbelt unless that person wears the belt, provided that the provisions of this regula-tion do not apply while reversing or moving in or out of a parking bay or area. Adults will also not be able to oc-cupy a seat on a row of seats in a motor vehicle operated on a public road which is not fitted with a seatbelt, unless all other seats in the row which are fitted with seatbelts are already occupied.

The driver of a motor vehicle operated on a public road must ensure that a child seated on a seat of the motor vehi-cle where it is available in the vehicle, uses an appropriate child restraint; or if no child restraint is available, wears the seatbelt if an unoccupied seat fitted with a seatbelt is available. Infants, on the other hand, must be seated on an appropriate child restraint, provided that this provision will not apply in a case of a minibus, midibus or bus ope-rating for reward.

Regulations 213 (6A) will also be in force as from 30 April 2015 and specifies that if no seat equipped with a seatbelt is available, the driver must ensure that a child will, if the vehicle is equipped with a rear seat, be seated there. A seatbelt will comply with the standard SABS 1080 specification, “Restraining devices for occupants of adult build in motor vehicles (Revised requirements)” and bear a certification mark or approval mark. A child re-straint should comply with the standard SABS 1340 spe-cification, “Child restraining devices in motor vehicles” and bear a certification mark or approval mark.

The MEC may exempt a person from the provisions of this regulation on such medical grounds and under such

Child Restraints Law to be implemented from 30 April 2015

The new Law on Child Restraints while travelling in a motor vehicle will become effective on 30 April 2015. It indicates that the driver of a motor vehicle operated on a public road must ensure that an infant is seated in an appropriate child restraint.

conditions he or she may deem expedient. An exemption from wear-ing a seatbelt in a prescribed territory will be deemed to be an exemp-tion in terms of sub regulation (9) for the period of validity thereof.

It is, therefore, of the utmost importance that the driver must ensure that all persons travelling in his or her motor vehicle wear a seatbelt as contemplated in this regulation. JD

JD

WhatsApp has in recent years built up a user base that numbers in the hundreds of mil-lions, the app’s been working to expand its fea-ture set into new modes of communication.

Following a lot of hype and rumors last year, WhatsApp introduced voice call support for Android devices at the end of last month (finally to everyone). Recently, the company rolled out this feature for all iOS users.

The new version of the app is out, at least for Android and iOS, updating WhatsApp to 2.12.1.

That contains the needed code to support voice calling, but not everyone will see the fea-ture become active straight away.

The only remaining significant platform that is still missing this functionality is Windows Phone and there is currently no indication when it will arrive.

WhatsApp is enabling it for users over the course of the next several weeks, so if you’re not able to participate just yet, be patient – it’s on its way.

Voice call support allows WhatsApp users to call each other using their phones’ data con-nections, either saving on voice plan minutes or enabling them to make calls at all, especially in areas where cell signals are week and Wi-Fi may be the only reliable connection.

Just make sure you don’t drain your data bundle chatting to that long-distance girl/boy-friend. JD

JD

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) continuously looks at improving the donor experience. We are very pleased to an-nounce that as of the 16th of March 2015, all 87 donor centres around the country will be offer-ing one hour free WiFi to all donors.

“We know that many of our donors spend much of their time on social media platforms and downloading other applications, and now compliments of SANBS you have 60 minutes of free access to the internet.” says Va nessa Raju, National Communications Manager, SANBS. All donors who donate blood at any of the donor centres will receive the 1 hour free

WiFi every 56 days or on their next visit to do-nate blood. Donors who donate platelets will receive their free access for an hour every four weeks or their next visit.

Now that we have the free WI-FI we want to encourage our donors to take “selfies” of their donation and to please post them on our Face-book page or to our Twitter handle.

We are look forward to interacting much more with you in the future.SANBS Contact informationContact 0800 11 9031 | www.sanbs.org.za | Facebook.com/SANBS | Twitter@theSANBS JD

BETHAL - The DA strongly condemns the EFF in Mpumalanga’s opportunistic exploitation of our people’s desperate need for land and the government’s failure to deliver on housing. Illegal land grabs only keep poor people further and further away from real land ownership.

According to media reports, EFF provincial chairman Collen Sedibe has encouraged community members across the province to occupy land illegally in places like Waterval Boven, Delmas and Bethal Extension 5. It is further alleged that Sedibe said the party is in the process of identifying more land for community members to occupy under the guise of it being vacant.

As it stands, South Africa is committed to the ‘willing buyer, willing seller’ principle, and the EFF’s deviation from this will further impact on government’s inability to deliver.

This will also compromise the quality of life for those living on this illegally occupied land. The DA questions whether Sedibe has even considered whether the illegally occupied land is viable for human settlement, whether services can be delivered there, or where these people will go should they be removed from this land.Illegal land occupation tends to result in the following outcomes;• Children having to walk very far to get to school- it’s

unlikely that there are schools close to these areas;• Service delivery protests resulting from the fact that there

are no services available to them;• Scaring off potential investors as no business person

would want to purchase land for operations with a high chance of it being taken away illegally.

Premier David Mabuza has on several occasions condemned land invasions and has spoken out strongly in favour of protecting land rights. The DA reiterates its call to Premier Mabuza to establish an ‘anti-land invasion rapid response team’ to immediately respond to any illegal land invasions that may occur in the province. The rights of land owners are enshrined in the constitution and the EFF would do well to educate themselves in this regard instead of encouraging criminality for political grandstanding.

Every South African has the right to access shelter but going about it illegally will only spell disaster for people who desperately need land. If the EFF is truly serious about addressing the issues of land redistribution, the DA urges them to follow due process so that everyone receives fair treatment. JD

‘n Musiekonderwyser van Hoërskool Volks-rust se musieksentrum, me.
