Edward the Confessor

Edward the confessor was king of England. He ruled for 24 years from 1042 to 1066 then died. He was married to Harold Godwineson’s sister Edith. He died in 1066.

Edgar the atheling believed he should have been crowned king because he was the only blood relative of king Edward the confessor. He was king Edwards’s nephew and the son of Edward’s brother.

Who should be king

Harold Godwineson was originally crowned king two days after king Edward died because he was Edwards’s brother in-law. he was Earl of Wessex

Tostig wanted to be king because he was Harold Godwineson’s brother and was jealous of his brother’s power.

Harald Hardrada was of Viking decadence and believed the Viking should regain the throne. He believed king Cnut’s son promised his father that he would give him the English throne.

William Duke of Normandy thought that king Edward promised him the throne and called king Edward an oath breaker. King William later gained the after winning the battle Hastings.

Who became king in 1066 Well 2 days after Edward the confessor died Harold

Godwineson became king. While that was happening Tostig and Harald Hadrada joined forces and set sail for England. When the fight ended Harald and Tostig were

both killed. Soon after William of Normandy prepared his army in France then they landed in Pevensey in southern

England. They met near Hastings on the 14 of October they fought to nightfall and Harold was killed and William

became king of England. He was crowned on the 25th of December.

This scene of the Bayeux tapestry shows the boats being loaded with supplies. far right there are two men on horseback and they are both carrying spears. Above them there is there is some Latin writing. Behind the men on horseback there are three men. One is carrying supplies and the other two are pulling a cart with arrows on top and something else on the bottom, which could be blankets. There is more writing above them. Men carrying supplies by hand follow in the procession. They are carrying barrels and other things. There is what looks like and arch or building behind them and to the left of the arch there is what looks like a statue. The colours used in this part of the tapestry are red, green, yellow, cream, blue, brown, and light blue. Red is used on the clothes of one of the men carrying supplies. Green is used on clothes and some of the animals, yellow and cream are used on clothes, horses and animals, blue is used on animals, clothes and horses, brown is used to outline most of the pictures and on a few animals and the light blue is used on the arch and to do lines in the border.
