    Traces of GracesDear Fellow Parishioners:

Phew! Christmas is over!!! Or is it just beginning? For some of us, Christmas has been comingsince Thanksgiving with Black Friday and other pre holiday sales. Others have been watching their

kids ramp up with excitement as schools close for the holidays. Still others find this an extremely

difficult time because of the lack of employment or the loss of a loved one. So is it over or just begin-

    ning?

Perhaps both. In order to celebrate an event,

one must get ready and so we have been

given the season of Advent to ponder, won-

der, and be drawn into the immense, loving

act of the Incarnation. Like the birth of any

child, there is a certain epiphany that can

take place, when one realizes the beauty, thefragility, the mystery of new life. Jesus be-ing born is just the start of the journey. It is

so much more than a magical moment in

time, a past event of long ago. Christmas

begins the march to the hill of salvation.

The Sunday following Christmas is the Feast

of the Epiphany, that awakening of thedeeper meaning of the Lords birth symbol-

ized in the gifts of the Magi. Then the

Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism

of the Lord, pointing to the mission of Jesus

to follow the will of the Father. Nice churchlanguage I suppose. But it suggests that we

dont put away the lights yet or toss the tree

(unless it is a fire hazard!). Let the crche in

your home linger a bit longer. The Christ-

    mas season has just begun!

To all of you who find this parish of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe de Jesus Chapel your place

of worship and spiritual home may the Lord grant you epiphanies of grace in this coming year. May

the Lord who has brought you to birth guide and protect you and your family. Thank you to all the

staff, priests, and volunteers who respond to the call of grace in their lives and open the doors for therest of us to join in this community.

    Together in Christ;

    Fr. Steve Sallot

    Pastor

    Meditando La Palabra

    IV

    var adelante su imperio.

(Is 9, 5)?

    SOCIETYOF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

At this Christmas season we reflect on theGospel according to Matthew 25:31-40. "For I was hun-gry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave medrink. I was a stranger and you welcome me, naked andyou clothed me, I was ill and you comforted me, inprison and you came to visit me."In its Mission Statement, the Society states "it makes nodistinction in those it serves because, in them, Vincen-tians see the face of Christ."

ABORTION IN AMERICAN HISTORYAmerican historyrecords that the strong anti abortionlaws which were passed in this country during the mid-1800's were enacted by Protestants. Roman Catholichad little influence in such areas due to their lack ofnumbers and to restrictions placed on their participationin the political process Until the U. S. Supreme Courtdecision of 1973 (Roe v. Wade), 47 state had lawsagainst abortion, yet Catholics were not a religious ma-jority on more than one or two of those. (WHOBROKE THE BABY, Jean Staker Garton)

When I have work - help me to remember the jobless. When I have a warm home - help me to remember the

homeless. When I am without pain - help me to remem-ber those who suffer. And remembering, help me to destroy my complacencyand bestir my compassion. Make me concerned enoughto help, by word and deed, those who cry out for whatwe take for granted. - Samuel F. Pugh
