Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

May 26, 2019 Page 5THE GIFT OF PEACE

“There arose no little dissension and debate.” Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on poli-tics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and debate?” That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolution. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” often encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in today’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The question of whether circumci-sion is necessary for salvation (Acts 15:1-2, 22-29). Psalm — O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67) Second Reading — John envisions the holy city, the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23) or Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20. Gospel — Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you (John 14:23-29) or John 17:20-26.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 16:11-15; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Jn 15:26 — 16:4a Tuesday: Acts 16:22-34; Ps 138:1-3, 7c-8; Jn 16:5-11 Wednesday: Acts 17:15, 22 — 18:1; Ps 148:1-2, 11-14; Jn 16:12-15 Thursday: Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28; 10:19-23; Lk 24:46-53 (for Ascension); otherwise Acts 18:1-8; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 16:16-20 Friday: Zep 3:14-18a or Rom 12:9-16; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 1:39-56 Saturday: Acts 18:23-28; Ps 47:2-3, 8-10; Jn 16:23b-28 Sunday: Acts 7:55-60; Ps 97:1-2, 6-7, 9; Rv 22:12-14, 16-17, 20; Jn 17:20-26; or, for Ascension, Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28; 10:19-23; Lk 24:46-53

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Sixth Sunday of Easter Monday: St. Augustine of Canterbury; Memorial Day Wednesday: St. Paul VI Thursday: The Ascension of the Lord (unless transferred to Sunday) Friday: Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturday: St. Justin; First Saturday

NEW ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED FOR ALL MASSES

To serve the Mass is an honor that requires competent and dedicated altar servers. So, we are once again recruiting new

altar servers, beginning with children at the fourth grade level, who attend, public, private or parochial school, or who are home-schooled. This ministry is an opportunity for our

children to learn more about the Mass and to assist the priest and deacon help the faithful in the pews become more

prayerful and active participants in the liturgy. Please prayer-fully consider and then discuss this ministry with your chil-

dren.

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH OFFICE: If you have moved or changed your phone number since registering with our parish, please let the rectory know so we can keep accurate records and get in touch with you when needed. Also, if you are not receiving envelopes and would like to, please call the rectory. Our number is 201-342-6300.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoic-ing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” meaning that in Christ a break-through to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signal-ing that a new age has begun in Christ and the out-pouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pen-tecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. To-day, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That’s why it is still Easter!

Hospital Visits We want to remind you that if you or a member of your family is in the hospital and would like a visit,

please call the rectory. Due to privacy laws the hospital cannot contact the parish directly. We want to visit all who are sick and this is the only way we

can find out who is hospitalized.
