Monthly Music Series: Funky Butt Brass Band

Wednesday, March 25 at the World Chess Hall of Fame located at 4652 Maryland Avenue

First, for those that don’t know -- Yes, the World Chess Hall of Fame is located in St. Louis. Originally known as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame, the World Chess Hall of Fame was created in 1986 by the United States Chess Federa-tion and its president at the time, E. Stephen Doyle. It opened in 1988 in the basement of the Federation’s headquarters in New Windsor, New York. After several moves over the ensuing years the World Chess Hall of Fame opened on September 9, 2011 in Saint Louis in the Central West End directly across the street from the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis. The World Chess Hall of Fame is housed in a historic 15,900 square-foot residence-turned-business and features the U.S. and World Chess Halls of Fame.

OK, now to the Monthly Music Series at the World Chess Hall of Fame. In March, the guest artists is the Funky Butt Brass Band. The FBBB released its debut CD, Cut The Body Loose, in 2009. The second CD, You Can Trust The Funky Butt Brass Band, entered the world in 2011. They also released an epic holiday EP entitled Shiny Christmas Balls, and in 2014 completed their latest CD, Sugar Sugar Whomp Whomp, featuring nine original tracks along with three classic New Orleans tune

The Funky Butt Brass Band was formed in 2008 by six musicians with a deep respect for the New Orleans brass band tradition. The FBBB takes traditional New Orleans brass tunes and gives them a twist, in the style of the Dirty Doz-en Brass Band, Rebirth and Bonerama. You may also detect some Motown, Southern rock, Memphis soul, Chicago blues and St. Louis R&B in the mix.

The band was voted Best Funk/Soul Band at the Riverfront Times Music Awards for four consecutive years. They have played such festivals as the King Biscuit Blues Festival, Roots N Blues N BBQ, Blissfest, Taste of St. Louis, Co-lumbus Jazz & Rib Fest, Gumbo Ya Ya and the Big Muddy Blues Festival. The Funky Butt Brass Band has shared the stage with such legendary Louisiana artists as Dr. John, Rebirth Brass Band, Bonerama, Chubby Carrier, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, New Orleans Suspects and the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

MISTAKES MADE BY FARMERS MARKET BEGINNERSIf you haven’t spent much time at farmers markets, they can be a bit intimidating. Here are some tips to help you in navigating the market.

ARRIVING TOO LATEShowing up at a farmers market in the late morning means big crowds and picked-over produce. Beat the rush by going early and getting the best of the season. Morn-ing light is also best for snapping pictures, if you’re into that sorta thing.

FORGETTING TO BYOB (BRING YOUR OWN BAGS!)Most farmers markets provide small plastic bags for your purchases, but you definitely want to have a larger bag to carry your bounty or you’ll be heading home prematurely.

BUYING STAPLESOne of the advantages of shopping at a farmers market is that you get the best of the season from local farmers, which is likely to be different from your normal grocery store purchases. There’s nothing wrong with buying foods you know you like, but try to be adventurous with new produce. You may be pleasantly surprised.

NOT ASKING QUESTIONSYou may not know everything there is to know about seasonal vegetables, but the farmers who grow them certainly do. Walk up to each vendor with a smile and ask them what their favorites are this week. If you’ve never cooked with them before, ask for an example recipe or serving suggestions. You can always search recipes online when you get home, so don’t feel like you need to know exactly how you’re going to prepare something before buying it.

FORGETTING CASHFarmers market veterans know better than to show up at the market without cash in our wallets. Credit cards are not accepted by most farmers and the line at the local ATM machine is a wait you could live without. Pick up some cash on your way to avoid the headache.

BRINGING PETSCheck your local market rules before bringing Fluff Fluff along on your shopping trip.

TRYING TO NEGOTIATEFarmers markets are not flea markets, and haggling is generally not part of the etiquette. Sometimes very late in the day farmers will offer discounts, but it is generally best practice to respect the set prices. Farmers work harder than most of us can imagine, and their asking prices are more than fair.

NOT SHOPPING AROUNDSamples are commonplace at farmers markets and allow you to find the best pro-duce to match your taste. Nothing is worse than buying a basket of strawberries and then finding better ones two stands away. Shop around a bit before deciding on the best purchases. You know you’ve picked the right stuff if you can barely get it home without eating it all.
