DOCTOR’S ORDERS

David A. Dorsey, MD

Within 20 minutes after you smoke that last cigarette, your body begins a series of changes that continue for years.

20 Minutes After Quitting: Your heart rate drops.

12 hours After Quitting: Carbon mon-oxide level in your blood drops to normal.

SMOKING CESSATION

2 Weeks to 3 Months After Quitting: Your heart attack risk begins to drop. Your lung function begins to improve.

1 to 9 Months After Quitting: Your coughing and shortness of breath decrease.

1 Year After Quitting: Your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s.

5 Years After Quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker’s 5-15 years after quitting.

10 Years After Quitting: Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker’s. Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esopha-gus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases.

15 Years After Quitting: Your risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker’s.

Effective treatments that can increase the chances of suc-cessful cessation include:

• Brief clinical interventions (i.e. when a doctor takes 10 minutes or less to deliver advice and assistance about quitting)

• Behavioral cessation therapies (e.g. training in problem solving)

• Treatments with more person-to-person contact and intensity (e.g., more time with counselors)

Cessation medications found to be effective for treating tobacco dependence include:

• Over-the-counter and prescription nicotine replacement products (e.g. nicotine gum, inhaler, nasal spray, lozenge, or patch)

• Prescription nonnicotine medications, such as bupropion SR (Zyban®) and varenicline tartrate (Chantix®).

The combination of medication and counseling is more effective for smoking cessation than either medica-tion or counseling alone.

250 YEARS OF ST. LOUIS MUSIC: AMERICAN MUSIC

AT ITS BESTFriday, October 17 at The Sheldon Concert Hall

located at 3648 Washington Blvd. in Grand Center

Music has been a vital part of St. Louis for 250 years – from the folk music of the French founders and the waves of settlers who came later, to classical music at the highest level, and especially to the city’s major contributions to ragtime, blues, jazz, R&B, and rock. The Sheldon Concert Hall is offering a music extravaganza featuring St. Louis favorites Denise Thimes, Peter Martin, Kim Massie, Billy Peek, Alarm Will Sound and more. Top St. Louis musicians will fill the Sheldon Concert Hall, Ballroom and Louis Spiering Room to celebrate the many genres of American music, from its historic roots to the present day.

Pre-concert festivities begin in the lower level lobby with the sounds of blues and jazz saxophonist, Willie Akins and guitarist Eric Slaughter. Simultane-ously, the St. Louis Ragtimers will perform in the Atrium lobby, and string wizards Gary Hunt and Dade Farrar will perform alt-country in the Sheldon Art Galleries. The Webster University Chamber Singers will wander the concert hall and lobbies, performing songs inspired by St. Louis’ French heritage.

Alarm Will Sound will take the concert hall stage, joined by Peter Martin, Denise Thimes and Kim Massie. Together, they’ll present a program including world premiere performances of two new commissioned works, by Martin and AWS founding member and cellist Stefan Freund, weaving together the musi-cal threads of classical, jazz, blues, rock, hip-hop, and more. Martin’s piece draws inspiration in part from the music of Miles Davis, while Freund’s “con/influences” evokes the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers as well as the blending of musical influences that takes place in St. Louis.

The music will continue in The Sheldon Ballroom with St. Louis’ own blues/rock and roll legend Billy Peek, followed by hip-hop fusion group, the Illphon-ics. The Louis Spiering Room will feature more jazz and blues, including an old-fashioned “piano cutting contest” where piano virtuosos will try to out-do each other in a musical showdown.

Tickets for 250 Years of St. Louis Music are on sale now through MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or at TheSheldon.org. For more information about this event call (314) 533-9900 or visit TheSheldon.org website.

This event is part of the American Arts Experience – St. Louis, a 17-day festival taking place October 3 through October 19 at arts organizations throughout St. Louis. Visit americanartsstl.org for more information.
