From the Desk of Fr. Mac,From the Desk of Fr. Mac, SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF JESUS Today’s feast is traditionally called Corpus Christi, but the name given it in the New Roman Missal is The Solem-nity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus. On this Solemnity we celebrate one of the central doctrines of our Catholic faith: the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist under the appearance of bread and wine. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “In the most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained” (CCC 1374). This is a key doctrine of our faith and a teaching that sets Catholics apart from most other Christians. Evangelicals and Fun-damentalists frequently attack this doctrine as "unbiblical," but the Bible is forthright in declaring it (cf. 1 Cor. 10:16–17, 11:23–29; and, John 6:32–71). Sadly, in a recent survey less than half of practicing Catholics surveyed believe in the Real Presence and know that this is official Church teaching. The same study showed a great many Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence at all. Others believe in the Real Pres-ence but do not know that this is the teaching of the Church. Still others mistakenly believe that the Church teaches that the bread and wine are only symbols of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In today’s Gospel passage we encounter Jesus gathered with his disciples at the Last Supper table where he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup … and said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” Jesus didn’t say “this is a symbol of my body or, this represents my blood,” Rather, he states clearly ‘this IS my body, this IS my blood.” It is the consistent teaching of the Catholic Church that Christ is really and truly present sacramen-tally in the Eucharist. This reveals to us a God who loves us so much he offers us a share in His very life! God is really and truly present to us in our triumphs and trage-dies, in our joys and sorrows. The Eucharist provides us with the spiritual nourishment and strength we need to sustain us on our Christian journey, a journey which we hope one day will culminate at the heavenly banquet. As faithful Catholics we need to help educate people about the Real Presence. We need to share the truth that in the Eucharist Christ is really and truly present. The question for us today is “Can I be really and truly present to the Real Presence?” In Christ,

Special Collection Priest Retirement Fund This weekend all parishes through-out the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

are asked to give generously to support the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. A second collection will be taken at each Mass to benefit this important program. Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compen-sation, and in many cases, no pension, these men often retire with nothing to fall back upon. Your contributions can change that. The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribution will help archdiocesan priests live mod-estly and peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God, and faithful service to our parish communities. Look for the brochures in the pews for more information.

Inquiry Session Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? Were you or someone you know baptized Catholic as a child, but have not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirma-

tion and Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) may be for you. RCIA is the process which prepares individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Bap-tism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter sea-son and be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. We will have an inquiry session at 7pm on Monday June 11 in the School Faculty Lounge. This is an opportunity to come together in an informal setting to learn more about the process. You are welcome to participate in this session and ask questions and share your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact Ray Perry at 818- 789-5947.

Our school program was blessed this year with 29 children receiving their First Holy Com-munion on May 16. Special thanks are directed to those who were

on the teaching staff. They are: Ms. Carolyn Schoenhaus, Ms. Laura Schoenhaus, Mrs. Michelle Kirk, Ms. Alexandra Kirk, Mr. Gene Krupa, Ms. Dessa Garban, Mr. Christopher Blaylock, and Mr. Ray Perry, director and teacher. Addi-tional thanks to Ms. Mary Jane Tortugo who gave of her time when needed. Thanks one and all. Volunteer catechists will be needed for September. If interested, call the RE office at 818-789-5947. Thank you!

Your new schedules have been mailed. Please call Mary Kane if you did not receive your copies.

For more information, call Claudia at 818-342-6626 or e-mail: [email protected]. Did You Know? Safety is an important part of summer fun Summer is almost here. School is almost out, and many new opportunities for recreation and relaxation await. Maybe you are sending your children to a music or sports camp? Or maybe they have been invited by their friends to go camp-ing in the mountains or at the beach? Whatever the situa-tion, it is important to remember that parents have the responsibility of controlling access that new people will have to their children. If your child will attend a summer camp, insist that counselors or anyone else who might have access to your children have undergone an application process that includes a criminal background check and ref-erence checks.
