FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC—Happy Mother’s Day! Loving God, As a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen. Prayer Source: Book of Blessings by Prepared by International Commission on English in the Liturgy A Joint Commission of Catholic Bishops' Con-ferences, The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, 1989 This Mother’s Day is a time to give thanks for the dedicated women who so selflessly live out their vocations as wives and mothers. As we celebrate Mother’s Day in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, I am deeply conscious of the extra work and added pressure many wives and mothers are bearing during this challenging time, especially working mothers. Moms, here’s a quick pandemic temperature check for you: While quarantined at home, have you found yourself feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, guilty, guilty for feeling guilty, or maybe all of the above? If so, you are not alone. Psychologists and labor experts agree that this health crisis is taking a greater toll on women, especially mothers, than it is on men. Let’s face it, even in the best of times, many working women work a “second shift,” performing unpaid work that includes caring for children, cleaning, cooking, laundry and many other tasks. But the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated mat-ters and many moms are busier right now than they’ve ever been. In addition to their regular paid jobs and “second shift” duties, they’re also helping their kids work through distance learning lessons, keeping cooped-up young ones occupied and fed, checking in on aging parents — all while attempting to keep their game faces on at work. In an interview with TODAY PARENTS Psychologist Dr. Robi Ludwig says “Even though many men have certainly stepped up to the plate, whenever there’s extra work to be done, it tends to fall on moms because we’re caregivers and we want to make sure that everyone is happy. Women really do take on that dual role even when they’re working outside of the house and especially when they’re in the house. It’s like the 1950s meets 2020.” Dr. Ludwig offers some tips for moms who are struggling during the pandemic: TRY TO KEEP GUILT TO A MINIMUM Ludwig says “Parents are emotionally feeling badly that life is not as it was even though they have no control over it. Par-ents tend to take on that guilt whether they can control it or not.” Ludwig advised against wallowing in mom guilt be-cause it isn't productive or helpful. DON’T BE A PERFECTIONIST RIGHT NOW Ludwig said this is a time to allow for imperfection and grace. "It’s not going to look perfect, (so) look at the big picture. It’s about connecting in the right way and figuring out how to enjoy each other. If you can’t get to everything all at once, so be it.” A LOOSE, BUT PREDICTABLE, SCHEDULE CAN HELP A schedule can help you and your children feel that everything is under control and can give everyone something to look forward to at various times of the day. FOCUS ON WHAT’S POSSIBLE RATHER THAN WHAT ISN’T “Try to have some fun with what is," Ludwig advised. "Keep a scrapbook. It’s about creating memories. Even in the most challenging of times, there can be beautiful moments. Look for those moments.” ASK FOR HELP IN SPECIFIC WAYS Ludwig said this is an ideal time for moms to ask for help from their family members, even if that feels different or un-comfortable. Try to be as specific in your requests as you can because you don’t want to leave things up to interpretation. Mother’s Day Blessings! Father Mac

Safeguarding the Children

Did you Know?

DRUG USE PREVENTION STARTS AT HOME You know it’s important to keep your children, especially teenagers, away from drugs, but be-sides lecturing, how can you impress this im-portance on your children? Setting an example at

home is a great start — watch how you communicate subtle messages about your own substance use, such as a glass of wine after a “hard day” or overdoing it on prescription medi-cation. Additionally, talk to your children about drug-related rules in real contexts, like parties. Give them realistic scripts for saying no if friends offer them drugs, so they have real options when the time comes. For more prevention ideas, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Ten Prevention Practices You May Not Have Considered” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx JOAN VIENNA– DIRECTOR OF SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN [email protected]

THE 15 PROMISES OF OUR LADY TO CHRISTIANS WHO RECITE THE ROSARY

Whoever shall faithfully serve Me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces.

I promise My special protection and the greatest graces to all who shall recite the Rosary.

The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat

heresies.

It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it

will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to

the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

The soul which recommends itself to Me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.

Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mys-

teries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not

perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become wor-

thy of eternal life.

Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the

Church.

Those who are faithful in reciting the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light

of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits

of the saints in paradise.

I shall deliver from purgatory, those who have been devoted to the Rosary.

The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.

You shall obtain all you ask of Me by the recitation of the Rosary.

All those who propagate the holy Rosary shall be aided by Me in their necessities.

I have obtained from My Divine Son, that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors,

the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.

All who recite the Rosary are My sons, and brothers of My only son Jesus Christ.

Devotion to My Rosary is a great sign of predestination.
