University Danforth Campus, One Brookings Drive near the corner of Skinker and Forsyth Boulevards.
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University is presenting “Julian Rosefeldt: American Night.” German artist Julian Rosefeldt’s multichannel film installation, American Night (2009), is a satirical critique of the mythology of the American West as portrayed in the westerns churned out by the Hollywood studios.
The installation consists of five projection screens arranged in a semicircle, like sitters around a campfire. At center, Rosefeldt’s cowboys solemnly quote John Wayne and Charlton Heston before launching into impressions of George W. Bush and 50 Cent. This technique employs and exposes the tropes of the mythic West offering commentary on how the narrative of the frontier pervades American culture with parallels between the machis-mo of Western gunslingers and American foreign policy. The effect reveals how the American western frontier artifice continues to shape American self-image and ideals of masculinity while legitimizing notions about the necessity and redemptive promise of violence in American culture.
The title “American Night” has a double reference in that it refers to a filtering technique that allows cinematographers to shoot evening scenes during the day, while at the same time giving a nod to “La Nuit améric-aine” François Truffaut’s 1973, influential meditation on filmmaking.
