Why are hybrid clouds important?

Hybrid clouds are a component of hybrid IT, and a hybrid IT platform provides business agility while simultaneously avoiding vendor lock-in.

Hybrid IT couples a hybrid infrastructure with a modern DevOps approach that leverages microservices, containers and microkernals. These are leading-edge approaches that can only be supported by adopting a data-centric view on security built around datatypes required by the business processes.

More from Kevin JacksonHow do you manage hybrid cloud?

Hybrid cloud is really hybrid IT. Enterprises must obtain (via internal training or third party partnerships) expertise in the operational aspects of managing hybrid IT. This may mean acquiring cloud brokerage enablement software.

More from Daniel NewmanWhat are the real benefits of hybrid cloud?

By seamlessly linking public service providers with private infrastructure, hybrid cloud strikes a balance that lets companies adjust what they buy to what they actually need.

This is particularly critical for companies that want the advantages of the cloud but need to protect privileged and confidential data, whether for internal purposes or to meet regulatory requirements.

A hybrid solution means an organization can invest in secure systems where needed but use the public cloud for less sensitive data.

Why do I need a hybrid cloud?

Because all of your workloads are not the same. They do not have the same performance, reliability, control and security requirements. If you tried to put everything you want in the cloud with the strictest requirements in those areas, you would be paying way too much.

I always recommend that they start with a single workload then add additional workloads, making sure each ends up with the right cloud solution that cost-effectively meets that workload’s requirements.

When should I use hybrid cloud vs. pure public cloud?

Public cloud is ideal for new applications that have limited requirements to communicate with existing enterprise applications and data.

However, when extending existing enterprise applications or for applications that are dependent on large amounts of enterprise data, a hybrid cloud approach should be considered.

More from Marc HamiltonHow can hybrid cloud help me address access to the latest processor technology?

Public clouds typically deploy new processor technology based on customer demand and may not always have the latest technology. However, be sure to check the latest offerings from your public cloud provider.

People think about cloud first as a place to write or run software alone – but quickly ask “can I hook this to my internal systems? How secure is that?”

The key is to consider what you are trying to solve – cost, complexity, robustness, new features, customer reach, etc? And, what is important within that solution? So I normally cut to the chase and ask two simple questions:

Requirements: In broad terms, what must the solution do? Don’t be specific here – that comes later.

Constraints: In specific terms, what must the solution NOT do?

From those two deceptively simple questions, a solution forms that dictates what goes where – using the strengths of each paradigm (on-prem and in cloud).

What is the driver for increased hybrid cloud adoption?

The potential associated with VPN.

The fact that many businesses prefer to place backend systems within their own datacenters has been rationalized through reasons of security, latency issues and several other factors.

As this has been a major obstacle for adopting hybrid-cloud solutions, e.g. through “bursting“ of critical resources to the cloud, improved and secure connectivity options should help businesses to leverage the flexibility and scalability obtained from a hybrid-cloud architecture. More from Olafur IngthorssonWhat is the key to deciding if hybrid cloud is a good option for my area of the organization?

What best suits for a hybrid environment for a particular business function depends entirely on the user information, the frequency of access required, the need to integrate into other business areas, and the process for storing information according to laws and regulations.

How does cloud impact business?

Clouds have become part of the fabric of how things are done and how business outcomes are achieved. Before deciding on your cloud approach, you must truly understand the possibilities that cloud technologies introduce. Then, you must agree on business initiatives, priorities, and desired results.

The decision should not be which singular type of cloud to deploy – private cloud or public cloud. The spotlight should be on delivering the right cloud at the right cost with the right characteristics (i.e. agility, compliance, security) to achieve the desired business results – and this typically evolves over time and requires multiple clouds with a combination of both public and private clouds resulting in a hybrid cloud end state.

What do CIOs need to consider when it comes to adopting the hybrid cloud within the organization?

CIOs should constantly be evaluating their cloud maturity, and looking ahead to what’s next on the horizon for their business.

While risk concerns are certainly valid, it’s important to note that working in a hybrid cloud environment allows IT professionals to pick and choose where they put private information.

Additionally, moving to a hybrid cloud model can be extremely cost-effective for the right organizations.

More from Shelly KramerHow do you fortify authentication methods and embrace encryption for hybrid cloud?

The login process for those who have secure cloud access should be supported and substantial. To accomplish this, make use of both multifactor authentication (MFA) and single sign-on methods (SSO). Using two unique URLs, administrators can log into a management portal, while general users have another portal with built-in permissions.

How can you determine which current applications can move to the public cloud and how fast to invest in building new applications?

Try and determine how to manage this private and public portfolio in an integrated way.

My guidance is to focus on public cloud first for new applications, which will force them to also invest in the skills and process needed to manage a more agile environment.

The new applications have the opportunity to drive differentiation for their business vs. cost-savings for legacy apps.

What are businesses looking for to manage cloud? Most businesses want to use the right cloud for the right workload. And this typically translates to a multi-cloud environment.

Ideally companies would want a single management console, the so-called “single pane of glass”, to manage these clouds both on-premises and public with the right kind of security and governance controls in place. There are several solutions and products emerging in this area.

If you are thinking about moving to the public cloud, but you think you need to keep data in the data center, what are your options?

It’s not necessarily a question about choosing a private cloud solution over a public cloud solution. So, while customers are expecting to see the hybrid cloud represented in solutions from a perspective of security and networking, there’s very little direct attention asking for how to deal with hybrid cloud.

It’s important to note that the hybrid designation is less visible in customer choice than public and private. Those are highly visible because they have specific risk and cost implications. There is a set of solutions that are specific to hybrid cloud deployment model that will be ignored as a part of that thinking.

How viable are hybrid cloud configurations in manufacturing environments?

Manufacturers most often adopt hybrid clouds to gain access to legacy systems including customer sales history, CRM and pricing data.

Creating a hybrid cloud architecture is critically important for unifying desperate, often previously-siloed systems. Once hybrid cloud architectures are created, current-generation CRM, sales force automation and analytics apps are being used to actively plan and implement new strategies. Hybrid cloud architectures become a platform for future growth.

More from Louis ColumbusCan hybrid cloud architectures assist in the vision of distributed manufacturing becoming a reality?

Manufacturers are often challenged to unify production operations across diverse locations yet must also report site-specific analytics and metrics of performance for each production location.

Having a hybrid cloud architecture, manufacturers are finding they can have private clouds at each manufacturing operation and use public cloud infrastructure as the foundation for their communication networks, often at a significant cost savings.

Hybrid clouds create a time-to-market advantage by allowing for greater flexibility and agility in defining manufacturing networks. So yes, hybrid cloud architectures assist with the vision of distributed manufacturing becoming a reality in many global manufacturing operations today.

How does the hybrid cloud reshape data breach risk?

As data moves from one place to another, the risk of exposure could increase depending on the level of controls in place in its new location and the process used in transferring it.

Data flows should be clearly defined and classified, so that they are protected by a level of control consistent with its classifications, no matter where they happen to be in the hybrid cloud.

How secure is my data and who will have access to it?

Carefully vetting a cloud service provider is integral during the selection process. Due diligence vetting cloud provider “employees” (who will have access to your data or services) is equally important.

Think of it as equivalent to the hiring process for a new employee –would you just blindly hire someone without conducting an interview process; background and reference checks; or credibility and reputation scans?
