Adaptability: Webster’s Dictionary defines the term as “The ability to make fit (as for a specific or new use orsituation) often by modification.” This could be the key to success for the 2003–2004 IPFW men’s basketball team. TheMastodons will have to adapt to new surroundings as they switch their home floor to the Memorial Coliseum, theaddition of four new freshmen, and the continued job of carving out an identity at the Division I level.

One thing that will not change, however, is the focus and game plan ofIPFW Head Coach Doug Noll. Leading the Mastodons into a full secondseason of Division I basketball, Coach Noll is certain that his team’s brandof basketball will be exciting. “We like to get up and down the floor, and welike to play up-tempo,” Noll said. “One goal for us is to play 94 feet for 40minutes.”

Noll likes to give his players a longer leash than most coaches. “Why passit 10 times and take a desperation shot at the shot clock buzzer, when onyour second or third pass you’ve got an open look?” he questioned. “I thinkour kids play better that way because they are not under pressure. Wewant them to play with a lot of feel. If you’re open, take the shot. If not, move the ball, get it inside, and use mismatches. All in all, I think it isexciting basketball!”

Exciting is an understatement when it comes to playing in the Allen County Memorial Coliseum. The prospect of playingin front of thousands of fans each game is not lost on the Dons. “Other than announcing that we were going to DivisionI, this is the second biggest announcement we have had at IPFW,” Noll said. “The rise has been phenomenal, evenbeyond my wildest expectations.” After playing in major arenas across the country, the Dons’ move to the Coliseumdefinitely gives the team a sense of belonging. “When you come back to a venue like the Coliseum, you really feelfulfilled that, yes, we are a legitimate D-I team, trying to become a good mid-major program,” Noll added.

Getting to that level on the court has brought IPFW to the realization that some things had to be changed. Number oneon the list was strength and conditioning. The coaching staff found that, on occasions last season, the squad wouldwear down a bit late in games. To that end, the players began strength training with Performance ONE. “PerformanceONE has had a huge impact on our players,” the Dons boss stated. “It’s part of a missing piece. They are making hugestrides in the areas of quickness, agility, and usable basketball strength.” Coach Noll says that the work in the weightroom has given his team a new sense of confidence. “I think it is going to help us down the stretch in games, becausewe’ll know that we aren’t going to tire out, and we won’t let people control us physically.”

Experience is another thing that will propel IPFW to the next level, and finally Coach Noll has players in place who havebeen with the system for a few years. “I’ve always been a seniors coach,” he stated. “I always feel like you are only asgood as your seniors, no matter whether they start or not. I think another key for us is that we return four starters andothers that have started at different times.”

Those starters include junior two-guard Terry Collins, junior wing Ric Wyand, senior forward Jim Kessenich, and juniorcenter David Simon.

While he has returning starters, Noll likes how his team has battled for playing time. “The point guard position, rightnow, is up in the air,” he said. The position is vacant due to the graduation of DeAngelo Woodall and Brad Noll. TheDons have three players vying for playing time. Sophomore Tyler Clevenger and freshmen Byron Malone and BeauBauer are each making their case to run the offense. “Any one of those three could get a lot of minutes for us,” Nollsaid. “We also have a wild card in Terry Collins who can play at the point.”

Noll also has depth at the two-guard. Backing up Collins will be exciting sophomore Quintin Carouthers, who can alsoslash to the hoop and dunk with the best of them, and athletic newcomer Justin Hawkins. Noll can also plug in Bauerand Clevenger into the two spot if the situation dictates.

Season Preview

2003–04 Mastodons Basketball

Page 11: 2003-04 IPFW Men's Basketball Media Guide

On the wing, Ric Wyand returns, and at 6'7" and 235 lbs., presents quite a few matchup problems. Wyand finished lastseason by torching Wright State for 23 points and 10 rebounds. Also looking to get time at the three is senior KeionHenderson. Henderson’s potential has barely been tapped due to numerous injuries. Finally healthy, he is ready to makea major contribution as a fifth-year senior.

The front court also gives Noll a tremendous amount of flexibility. “Wyand and Brandon Jennings can be a 3-4 combo.Kyle Thrasher sometimes goes at the 4-5, which we like, and Jim Kessenich can also go at the 4-5, but he is probablygoing to start at the four,” Noll explained.

Then there is the problem for opponents called David Simon. The Donscenter came on to average more than 17 points per game the last part of the2002–03 season, while being named Independent Newcomer of the Year.“We are contemplating playing him some at the four because he can shootthe ball so well,” Noll said with a smile. “That’s something no team has seenyet.” Noll has that luxury because of the emergence of 7'0" freshman centerEric Bergstrom, who according to Noll, “has the biggest heart of any playerhe has ever had.”

This flexibility will cause match-up problems for the opposition. “We can gobig, small, strong, quick, or scoring,” Noll said.

Noll also knows what he is looking for as a benchmark for a successful year.“We have a high mountain to climb, facing the talent that we are facing, andyou need to be realistic,” he said. “But, you also need to set high goals foryourself. We think that a successful season for our team will be a winningrecord. We have 26 Division I games, and if we split those, we are at 13-13.If we win our two non-Division I games then we have our winning season. Ican't think of a better place I’d rather be right now. We’ve started this…Nowwe’ve got to see it through."

It’s all part of adapting.

Coach Doug Noll is an optimist. He’s also a realist. Having gone through a toughbut exciting transition to Division I, Noll sees the progress that has been madeand is very excited. He also sees the struggles that come with making thetransition to Division I, but looks forward to the challenge. “How exciting is it to dosomething that few people get a chance to do — start up a Division I program,"Noll said. “It is really our baby. We have to learn how to crawl, then walk, thenrun, and we have to do it the right way. I believe we are doing it that way bybringing in great kids, great students, very good players, and developing themfrom the freshman year. That is the right way for us to make this transition workand progress to the point of a good mid-major program."

“I’m thankful every day that IPFW has given me a great opportunity to do what I love to do.” There are many peoplewho want to coach at the D-I level, and I feel really blessed that I have the opportunity to do it at such a greatinstitution.”

Last season, which was IPFW’s first official season of Division I, Noll led theMastodons to a 9-21 record. On the surface this looks like a tough season, butIPFW has learned what it takes to be competitive from playing the likes of UNLV,Utah, Oregon State, Colorado State, Wyoming, Nebraska, and the Butlers of theworld, by finishing the last 13 games with a record of 7-6. The Dons were also init, right to the end, of seven other games. “Most schools, during a transition period, play only four to six Division I teams so they can have a winning record. Our goalwas to figure things out a little faster so we played 24 D-I teams in our transitionyear. It was difficult to play teams like the Michigan States and Michigans, but Ithink it really helped us understand more quickly what we need to do to besuccessful at this level.”

The scheduling has also helped in recruiting. Noll, along with Associate HeadCoach Joe Pechota and Assistant Coach Fred Andrews (IPFW’s recruitingcoordinator), have brought in a young but talented group for the second consecutive year. “We still have 10underclassmen and 5 upperclassmen,” Noll said. “But, I really like the way our kids have developed.” That developmentis being shown on the floor. Last season the Dons had a lead on Oregon State with under five minutes to go and ledWyoming, with seven minutes to go, before falling in both contests. IPFW beat NCAA Tournament participant IUPUI andfinished the season with a 23-point win over Wright State of the Horizon League.

With time comes experience, and progress is being made. “We always expect more from ourselves than other peopledo,” Noll stated. “That's why the only pressure we feel is what we put on ourselves. These kids, like Keion Hendersonand Jim Kessenich, have made themselves into good Division I players.”

“In our transition year, we just wanted to survive,” Noll said. “In our first year, wanted to compete…which we did, andthis year we want to win.”

Noll is the perfect operator for this roller coaster ride. His calm demeanor and steady hand help his student-athletesexcel on and off the court. And, it is a safe bet that his format for success will continue with the leap to D-I.

At Spring Arbor University, Noll’s teams averaged more than 21 wins per year during a six year span. Under hisleadership, Spring Arbor set a record for wins in a season (29) and winning percentage (.820), and was nationallyranked at #2 in preseason NAIA Division II polls.

One of Spring Arbor’s winningest coaches, with a record of 131-108,Noll was twice selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference Coachof the Year (’93–’97). His 1997 team finished the season rankedfourth in the nation.

Before moving to Spring Arbor, Noll was the assistant coach at GraceCollege. From 1990 to 1992, he helped transform a 10-22 team intoone that compiled a record of 49-17. In the ’91–’92 season, Graceposted a mark of 32-5, winning the first ever NAIA Division II NationalChampionship.

Coach Noll was also a successful player on the court. He transferredto Grace College from the University of Wyoming. At Grace, he wastabbed as a two-time NAIA All-American. In only two seasons withthe Lancers, he poured in 2,250 points, which ranks him fourth All-Time. Between 1976 and 1978, he stepped up to the free-throw linemore often than any other college player in the country. He alsoknocked down more foul shots than any other player, connecting on654 of 741 attempts for an impressive 88 percent. Noll averaged anoutstanding 27.7 points per game.

Considered an excellent teacher by his peers, Noll has conductedclinics and camps throughout the United States and in 10 Europeancountries. He has also produced an instructional video on how bestto shoot free-throws.

In addition to his aforementioned coaching positions, Noll alsocoached at Malone College, in Canton, Ohio, and South Adams HighSchool in Berne, Ind.

Noll’s family includes his wife of 28 years, Carla, who is an officemanager at International Isocyanate Institute. His son, Brad, played at IPFW from 1999 to 2003, is sixth All-Time on theIPFW scoring list, is also in five Top 10 All-Time categories, and is a successful realtor with Century 21-Bradley RealEstate. His daughter-in-law, Lindsay, is a registered nurse at Lutheran Hospital, and his daughter, Abby, was Player ofthe Year in Northeastern Indiana last season at Carroll High School. When Doug Noll first arrived at IPFW and began the task of assembling hiscoaching staff, he sought to bring together talented individuals dedicated tothe growth of Mastodon basketball. After a stellar career as a player, Pechota began his coachingcareer as a student-assistant under Cardinal’s coach LarryDeSimpelare. He remained in that position until earning a B.S. in physical education in 1995.

Pechota then spent the next three seasons as the top assistantat Division III Alma College in Alma, Mich. There he played a keyroll in the rebuilding process of the Scots program. At the same

Coach Pechota and his wife, Samantha, reside in Fort Waynewith their children Austin (9) and Emma (5).

Noll on Coach Pechota: “It’s important to me that an assistantcoach know X’s and O’s to be an asset to a program, but it’smore important I feel that he have a passion for the game.Joe’s top qualities combine both of these. Joe has brought atireless effort to this program, which is why he has earned thetitle of associate head coach. He has a great feel on the courtand can relate and teach the game of basketball. His drive toexcel as a college coach allows him to compete at a high levelevery time out.”

Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, itoffers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there aretwo professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and theMidwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres.Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National BasketballAssociation and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseballleague. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, theSummit City offers venues such as the Fort WaynePhilharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink,Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of thetelevision Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashiondesigner Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washingmachine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

(Are we talking about the Team or Centennial Wireless?)

Feared by the competition. Great coverage. Never stops working.

Both. Just like the Mastodons, we do whatever it takes to win.

At Centennial, we custom build wireless plans that save you time and money.

Plus, we make sure our coverage is great where you need it.
