48 Baseball Baseball Baseball Baseball Baseball The Chipola Baseball Program is coming off of a 41-18 season which featured the school’s second FCCAA State Baseball Championship and the school’s first ever national baseball champion- ship with a 7-3 victory over New Mexico JC in the NJCAA National Championship Game in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Indians will try to make a second consecutive appearance in Grand Junction, but it want be easy. The Indians will have to get through the ever tough Panhandle Conference and the FCCAA State Championship in Lakeland. The Indians return five out of the top six pitchers from last season’s team. Staff aces Ryan Chaffee (8-2, 3.30 ERA) and Drew Parker (8-2, 3.21 ERA) both return. Kyle Regnault (4-2, 3.25 ERA), Daniel Jones (7-2, 4.20 ERA), and Ben Jeffers, who is recov- ering from off-season surgery also return for Chipola. Newcomers to the Indians’ pitching staff include Jason Townsend (Sherwood Christian), David Buchanan (Fayette County), Carlos Moncrief (Hillcrest Christian), and Jordan Lucas (Venice). Chipola will face the toughest non-conference schedule in my twelve years. The schedule willfeature games against nationally ranked team such as Broward, College of Southern Nevada, WaltersState, Saint Petersburg, Yavapai (AZ), Middle Georgia, and Meridian (MS) to get the Indians ready forthe Panhandle Conference.

The key for the Indians success this season, are the same ingredients that propelled the Indiansto the World Series last season. The Indians must put in the hard work to strive to get better everyday,develop good leadership among the team, and learn to love to play the game with one another.

CHIPOLA WINS NATIONALCHAMPIONSHIP IN BASEBALL

GRAND JUNCTION, CO—The Chipola Indi-ans captured the school’s first national champi-onship in baseball Saturday with a 7-3 win overNew Mexico Junior College in the NJCAA NationalChampionship.

Winning pitcher Ryan Chaffee pitched a com-plete game and was named Outstanding Pitcher ofthe tournament. He struck out eight and gave uponly five hits against the New Mexico squad that wasaveraging nearly 10 runs a game in the tourney.

Logan Pierce started Chipola’s offensive strikewith a double in the first. He was three for five onthe day. Paul Gatchel was three for four on thenight. Tom Hatcher was three for five. Trey Manzhomered in the fourth. Chipola scored one in thefirst, two in the fourth, two in the seventh and singleruns in the sixth and eighth innings.

Indians pitcher Drew Parker earned MVP hon-ors for the tournament with two wins and twosaves. Chipola coach Jeff Johnson gave all thecredit to his players. “We’ve got some great kidswith some big old hearts,” he said. Tom Hatcher,Ryan Chaffee and Drew Parker were named tothe All-Tournament Team.

Chipola scored six runs in the first inning andseven runs in the second inning on their way to ahuge 27-12 win over Spartanburg Methodist ear-lier on Saturday to earn a spot in the Champion-ship game. Trey Manz and Daniel Renfroe bothhomered in the first and Jesus Barroso homeredtwice in the offensive onslaught. Drew Parker wasthe winning pitcher for Chipola in six innings.

The Indians won five of six games on theirway to the national title, beating Iowa WesternCollege 11-5 on May 26, the first day of the tour-ney. The Indians scored five in the sixth after atwo run homerun by Tom Hatcher. Hatcher hit an-other two-run homer in the top of the ninth to giveChipola the 11-5 advantage.

Chipola outlasted Spartanburg 14-12 in theteams’ first round meeting on Monday. The Indi-ans earned a spot in Friday’s semi-final with a 7-6win over San Jacinto (TX) College on Wednes-day. Chipola’s only loss of the tournament was a10-6 misfire against Spartanburg on Friday in thesemi-finals.

Chipola is the first Florida team to win the na-tional tournament since 1988 when HillsboroughCommunity College captured the title.

Coach Jeff Johnson is beginninghis 12th year at the helm of the Chipolabaseball program. In his previous yearsat Chipola, he has a combined recordof 389-197 and in 2007 won his firstFCCAA State/NJCAA Region VIIIChampionship and his first NJCAANational Championship. Johnson hasadvanced to the Region VIII state tour-nament 8 times, winning his first cham-pionship in 2007, finishing runner-up in2001, 2002, and 2005 and 3rd in 1998.Also under the leadership of CoachJohnson, the Indians have won thePanhandle Conference 6 out of the last7 years. Johnson also had success inthe last eleven years sending 110 play-ers onto the next level of baseball ei-ther to the professional baseball or toa four-year college. Of the those, 23 ofthem are actively playing at this time.Coach Johnson has also coached 3players that are playing in MajorLeague Baseball (Jose Bautista,Russell Martin, and Adam Loewen).

Before coming to Chipola in 1997,Johnson coached in high school for 8

years. Johnson began his coaching ex-perience at Marianna High School in1989. During his seven year tenure, heled the Bulldogs to a 127-48 record,three District Championships, two Re-gional Championships, and a Sub-re-gional Championship. MHS also wonthe school’s first Sectional Champion-ship and attended the school’s first everState Championship Final Four in 1991.

Returning home in 1996 toBristol, Florida, Johnson washired as Head Baseball Coachfor Liberty County High School.LCHS achieved a 25-7 season,a District Championship, a Re-gional Championship, and aState Championship Final Fourunder Johnson. The Bulldogswere also the runner-up in the1996 State Championship - an-other school’s first.

Johnson earned a Bachelorof Science Degree in PhysicalEducation from the University ofCentral Florida in Orlando, whileon a baseball scholarship. While

at UCF he held the all-time CareerSaves record. He earned an Associateof Arts degree from Gulf Coast Com-munity College also while on baseballscholarship. Johnson led GCCC to aFCCAA State Championship as thewinning pitcher in the 1986 tournament.

Johnson is married to Nancy YonJohnson of Blountstown. They haveone daughter, Shelbie.

NICK FLETCHERASSISTANT COACH

Nick Fletcher is in his thirdseason as assistant coach atChipola. Fletcher works with theIndian’s outfielders and alsoassists with hitting. Fletcher is alsoin charge of field maintenance andfacility upkeep at the ChipolaBaseball Field.

Fletcher assists in recruitingand helps coordinate the

academic progress for the Indians. Coach Fletcher alsodirects the strength workouts for position players.

Fletcher spent the 2005 season as the assistant coachat Harding University, a NCAA Division II college whichcompetes in the Gulf South Conference. Fletcher was thepitching and infield coach while at Harding.

From 2002 – 2004 Fletcher coached at his alma materFaulkner University. During the 2003-2004 season he wasthe junior varsity Head Coach and assistant coach for thevarsity. In the 2002-2003 campaign he was a graduateassistant coach for the Faulkner Eagles.

Fletcher played at Faulkner University from 1999 – 2002.During that time he made the National Christian CollegeAthletic Association (NCCAA) World Series All-TournamentTeam in 2002. Fletcher was a NCCAA All-Region Teammember in 2001. Fletcher was also a Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC) All-Freshman Team memberin 1999. During Fletcher’s years at Faulkner he was a partof the 2001 NCCAA national championship team, and the2000 GACC championship team.

Fletcher is the son of Tom and Jane Fletcher fromMontgomery, AL

JARED HARRELLASSISTANT COACH

Jared Harrell is currently en-tering his third year as an assis-tant coach at Chipola. Harrellworks with the catchers, assistswith hitting, pitching, recruiting,and helps maintain the facility.

Harrell worked with threecatchers that are currently playingat the next level in baseball ChrisKirkland (University of Memphis),

Tyler Flowers (Atlanta Braves) and Trey Manz (University ofSouth Florida).

Before arriving at Chipola, Harrell was a student assis-tant coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe from 2003-2005. He was in charge of catchers and assisting with hit-ting at ULM. While at ULM, Harrell received a BA degree inGeneral Studies.

Harrell played college baseball at North Arkansas from1998-2001.

BRENT SHELTONASSISTANT COACH

Brent Shelton is currently in hisfourth season at Chipola. Sheltonserves as recruiting coordinator,coordinating administrative dutiesand works with the hitting.

Upon graduation, Shelton en-tered the coaching profession asan assistant at P.K. Yonge LabSchool in Gainesville, FL. Whileworking with one of the top high

He then moved back home to Liberty County High Schoolin Bristol, FL., where he spent a year as an assistant in base-ball and football.

During the 2004-05 seasons, Shelton served as the headbaseball coach at Sneads HS in Sneads, FL, compiling a25-24 record and taking the Pirates to their third state tour-nament appearance in the school’s history.

Shelton moved into the collegiate coaching ranks in 2003as an assistant at Chipola for one year. Shelton re-joinedthe Chipola staff during the 2006 season.
